“Off grid” cctv using hotspot

So here’s a random topic STW might be able to help with, closely connected to the recent weather.

I want to set up an outdoor cctv camera on my boat - to check it’s still where I left it after a storm such as this last one as it’s a 6hr round trip there and back.

It’s not somewhere with wifi, but has decent 4g coverage so would be using a hotspot on a data contract.

I’d be looking to plug into the boats 12v system and only record “on demand” when I log onto it. Pretty sure the existing solar panel would cover any power draw.

I imagine most home CCTV’s would work with a mobile hotspot OK but constantly recording would presumably use an awful lot of data. I also presumably don’t want my data going through some insecure data farm in an unsavoury part of the world.

Thanks

Cheaper options will definitely exist, but if you are already paying for the upkeep of a boat... An Arlo 'Go' plus the solar charger will do the job and be hassle free.

Isn't what you need there some sort of GPS tracker? If the CCTV tells you it's not where you left it, then what?

Or have I misunderstood the question?

If you already have the WiFi hotspot up and running, then something cheap like an Amazon Blink can presumably be set to an off mode whereby they are not looking for movement triggers? But you can still log in for a live view

He'll be able to watch it bobbing about on the sea somewhere?

GPS tracker seems like the way to go.

Get a 4g camera that records to itself and a solar panel to power it…

I have Blink cameras in the campervan. They are linked to a 4g SIM and both the 4g and cameras are powered by the van 12v battery that is hooked to solar. You can set the camera to off or motion detection.

When off - you can link into the camera remotely to switch them on and see live time. It is great for leaving the van fully loaded knowing it will message you and start recording if it detects anything. Being off most of the time it uses virtually no data.

I'm sure there are other options (that are not Amazon) but it works fine.

We use these at work on our trash screens though they are costly about £2000 each but very reliable and a good picture even at night. We have them in some very remote areas. We even have some smaller portable ones that can be set up at breaches or other areas that need monitoring.
