Was driving home with the Mrs last night (in suffolk) and just as we were nearly home the sky lit up orange in the NW direction. Both of us said 'what the....' and i stopped the car. About 30 seconds later same thing happened (same direction/brightness) but this time a bright blue colour. We're out in the sticks so can see plenty of sky.
It was raining, there was no thunder. Seemed to bright for lightening and the difference in colours of the two flashed was so distinct it seemed unlikely to be lightening.
Any idea what it might have been?

thought might be power lines down but the flash really was large....bigger than one might expect from a power line.
