Would love a go in one of these
[img] [/img]
When I was in infant school I remember these twin girls parents had one in a kind of metallic silver/brown, looked like a spaceship to the younger me.
The stretched version is even more awesome, may struggle at the McDonalds drivethru.

@cougar

I owned a 309 in that colour, with the sunroof and those wheel trims... 😯

Hilariously crap body and trim (and CV joints), but the engine I reckon is still going today.....

There's an old dear (70+) in my town that's got one of those ^ in a dark metallic grey - makes a lovely noise and i'd love one as well but at the astronomical prices they command that'll never happen.

Beefheart I had a Scimitar GTE for 9years, was pretty good for biking apart from being so low to the ground. Had some great trips with the bike and car, sounded great and was a blast on the motorway.

My brother in law had a lancia fulvia for sale many years ago, but refused to sell me it as he said "lancia's are more trouble than they are worth". Beautiful it was.

My dads mate had a 6 wheeled Range Rover, back in the early 80's.
Very cool, to a 6 year old.

There isn't room for me to list all the odd car I want. Dull is the worst quality a car can have for me.

To all those lusting after a CX, get one they're even better to drive than they are to look at.

[img] [/img]

My old one.

Today I've decided I mostly want an Audi V8

No pics, but
Mk1 Opel Manta
Bmw 2002
Citroen 2cv (which we did own and great fun it was)

I had a Mk1 Manta, beautiful car, really nice to drive.

[img] [/img]

Always had something of a hankering after an Opel GT, I remember seeing one at a custom car show, the number plates had chrome surrounds with 'When I grow up I wanna be a 'Vette' written on it, which still makes me smile.

It makes me sad seeing all of these old Citroens. You don't see that kind of intercontinental flair any more, and it's unlikely we'll see it ever again. Some of them were horrible, but they were most definitely French, and had bags of character. I did quite like the BX growing up, what with the hydraulic suspension and all. Fully pimped.

^^^^Its like a way cooler and somewhat 'chic' Ghostbusters wagon!!

Ectomobile???

I'm glad i'm not the only one who likes strange old Citreons - i should know better though after doing an apprenticeship on early 1990's Peugeot's...

First and foremost, about the Gordini R5 -

I had me one of these when all my mates were lusting after XR2's and 205 GTI's. Ugly but well hung.

I'll tell you now, when the lottery numbers come good, a refurb'd Gordini Turbo will be my everyday transport.

All hearsay and from memory, but Fuego turbo I think had the 1.7 litre motor, same as the 18 turbo, not that great, and not as feisty as the littler one that was in the R5 GT turbo, 11 turbo and (rarely seen on UK shores) 9 turbo. They were all magnificent, quirky, individual bits of engineering that wouldn't even be considered today.

That red alfa above was similar to my rare italian import back in 1999 apart from the lairy spoiler, Lhd and a genuine 01658 tuned engine from a crashed evolution model fitted (smaller bore engine to get past homologation specs) - shame a stupid dozy bint applying her makeup (she need never worry about make up again after smacking her face off the steering wheel at 60mph) drove into the back of it when i was stationary in roadworks on the M6 and totalled the rear end beyond repair as gearbox was to the front of the di dion back axle, the impact through the rear of the car and propshaft cracked the engine block and it was too far beyond reasonable repair - despite being a lifelong VW geek (golfs/sciroccos/corrados) i'd love to own another one…apart from the electrics as they were somewhat temperamental but i could forgive the various shortcomings as the turbo howl was just lush at full chap and the handling was sublime.

Looking at that SMART above made me think about the Brabus I owned. To some these were/are just the silliest cars around. You wouldn't believe the comments I used to get whilst driving one, but it would go like stink (stage remap) changed the front steering bushes for nylon ones (better steering) thats it, made me grin every time I drove it. Sadly gone now but I still see it at the Club where I sold it to a mates Grandmother who fell in love with it.

I want another.

when I was younger I fancied one of these serb croat made machines
[img] [/img]
Imagine my delight when they get name checked in a hollywood movie by Dan akaroyd 🙂

I wanted to try that magic carpet ride and some snoop dogg car boinging action and bought one of these
[img] [/img]

It bounced more than tigger on a day out with pooh. Little did I know that meant I had duff balls. After finally finding a local garage and new balls it was awesome. The introduction to leaky oily diesels was complete when I took the plunge and ran it on veg oil. Oh the smell, sweet pure 3l veg oil from sainsburys. The look on my mothers face as I poured veg oil to drive home was priceless.

MK2 was even better with rounded edges and an immobiliser. The boot was huge, the ride was smooth and comfortable. I loved raising the suspension whilst in the car to drive down country lanes. The owners advocate doing suspension yoga every now and then.

I have a soft spot for the suzuki cappucino , maybe its the name, maybe its the cute size. Sadly I dont think I'll every own one

We had a Cappuccino. It was mad. 600cc engine, size of a shoe, so low to the ground there was no dignified way to get out of it. I just used to park it on some grass and roll out 🙂

Hair down by Alex Leigh, on Flickr

It was so much fun to drive even tho my head poked over the windscreen. My wife loved it as it was more her size. Had to go eventually, you could watch it rust before your eyes.

I really, really wanted a TR7 when I was too young to drive. A lucky escape i think 🙂

I was just about to post a picture of a DS, haven't seen one on the road for years.
Incidentally the garage a few miles down the road from me has two red Izeta Bubble cars in the showroom

So lots of people seem to have fancied cool/desirable cars then 🙂 ❓
I'm struggling to think of anything distinctly odd, maybe a Toyota Hilux is odd to some people? Seems perfectly rational to me though as someone who grew up watching the Fall Guy, Back to the Future etc. Owned two so far, want another.
[img] [/img]

Another unconventional beauty would be the Legacy RS. Still have to scratch that particular itch at some point, despite owning later cars. Again it's pretty obvious to me why someone would want one.
[img] [/img]

Another point to make is that older cars, almost any older car is by default cooler than the current stuff on the road, just by virtue of being different.

Really, really wanted an Alfa Romeo SZ. Stupidly, I never kept an eye on secondhand prices because they were reasonable for a while. Not now of course!

Rear wheel drive, silly Alfa V6…

Yeah, but the SZ was on the cover of every magazine at the time.
Hard to call it an 'odd' choice.
It's proper boys bedroom poster material.

Keeping it russian, I love these, it's like an aghast Delica

THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA

Had a 155 v6 in red with some subtle mods to suspension and engine. Amazing car I'd have it back if the guy who bought it hadn't of blown the motor.

I LOVED those when I was a kid, they look awesome head on, lovely on a 45 like your pic, a bit weird side on and frankly just odd from the back.

I've always been morbidly fascinated by the Mazda Roadpacer, which must have been one of the dumbest ideas ever. It was based on a Holden Primier, which was a slightly posher version of an Aussie taxicab. The top spec Aussie versions had a 5 liter V8, but Mazda fitted a 1300cc rotary engine and sold them in Japan as an executive car. I've always imagined driving them would be like a kid in a toy car making all the engine sounds but not actually going anywhere.

my Nan had one of these until she was about 80 and couldn't see over the steering wheel anymore. even in brown I thought it was cool. it was an automatic too with cat-sick yellow velour seats.

[img] [/img]

it reminded me of my Uncle's Manta GTE - I'm not sure if that was cool or not?

Exactly - Opal Manta GTE whats odd about that? Any Audi, Renault, Citroen all common cars bar a few of the early 70's Citroen like the SM for example. Maybe a few of the Renault V6 are rare yes not exactly odd through!!

I only put the Opel Manta there to counter the Brown Cavalier which I thought was pretty odd, even though they're practically the same car.

I loved Manta's...and had 3, all of which ended up with a big dent in one or both of the rear wings

I also loved the Ascona - even better than the Manta. I had about 3 of them

Also had a Rekord for a little while - white with the Motorsport stripes

Old Opel's where brilliant and handled way better than the equivalent Ford's of the day

Old cars are way better than modern shite

Any odd* cars you fancied in your childhood?

*Odd meaning the sort of car that would be less likely to have attracted the interest of your mates.

That pic of Rickard Rydell must be the most posted volvo ever. I'd like a late model cavalier, my dad always had cavs for company cars and I loved the last one like a brother, CDX with the V6 I think it was. And enables me to see your two wheels and raise you a John Clelland

When we were all teenagers we had a thing for small sporty Italian cars. The one I always wanted but never got (they had all rusted away before I could get my hands on one) was the Lancia HPE

[img] [/img]

I did however own a Fiat 124 sport coupe that was my first real car (til it caught fire on me!)

[img] [/img]

I also had a brief relationship with a Fulvia but I only got to drive it once under its' own power
