Being the very new proprietor of new-to-me Peugeot estate got me thinking about the marque, when I remembered that I really used to fancy a particular Peugeot back when I was a kid. It was the Peugeot 505, and the only model that ever really had a foothold in Canada.
We were travelling across the West to the Rockies in Alberta once, and there was one parked outside our motel. I remember talking to my dad about it, and saying that I liked the way it looked - especially its cool front lights shape.
Any odd* cars you fancied in your childhood?
*Odd meaning the sort of car that would be less likely to have attracted the interest of your mates.
Both of the above are ace :-D.
Subaru pickup would be my choice.
My dad's mate had eclectic tastes in cars when I was growing up. He had a Bond Bug at one time! 😀

The car I remember most was a Citroen CX that my dad borrowed off him for some reason (can't remember why now). I thought it was fantastic and long held the belief that I'd own one one day. I remember persuading my dad to get me a brochure from the local Citroen dealer and cutting out all the pics and pinning them on my bedroom wall.
perchy, we had a CF2 with that exact colour scheme! It even had a sunroof.
Argyll GT
...is impressed
Skoda 110R/130RS.
Still want one.
Any thing from Citroen's acid days.
I had a Dyane, which was an amazing car in so many ways.
Actually, a brand new C15 van would be lovely.
footflaps - MemberWhen I was in my early 20s I used to want one of these, but could never afford it....
Is a Golf VR6 an 'odd' car for someone to want, then?!
I had an X19 - cracking little car - stuck an Uno Turbo lump in it, then a 20V Coupe Turbo - used to eat GTI's, etc for breakfast!
Have a hankering to do another with a full digital dash, this time.
The Argyll was made in Lochgilphead (where i went to school for a few years back in early 80's) and my mums dad used to occasionally do work for Bob, he had a tiny workshop which was full of stuff that fascinated me as a kid and i used to love going for test drives down to Inveraray and back as it felt like getting into a spaceship but more often than not there was mechanical issues with the cars and they ended up getting trailered back to the workshop. For a brief time though i was the most popular kid in the school 😀
I'll pop over later and see if my mum has any pics in her scrapbook.
Bedford van and 480 +1 . I think, if I analyse that, it's probably because I had the matchbox cars.
I still want a vauxhall viva hc or firenza. Not even a droop snoot, a normal one. But I think these days you basically have to buy a VIN plate and a ton of sheet metal and make your own
😯
I like the Avantime! shame they didn't do a 2.0 diesel version!
Had a 480, great car!
I have some saddo cars at the moment, including an Austin Princess and a Reanult 5 Monaco.
Percy I had the Alpine version of the 5. Awesome little car, lost my licence with that one...
Mitsubishi Galant as a wee little lad

Is a Golf VR6 an 'odd' car for someone to want, then?!
No idea. In my 30s I finally could afford a nice car, so bought the VR6's successor the Golf V6 4motion (1st car with the Haldex AWD system). Absolutely loved it, even though it drank petrol like is was going out of fashion...
The X1-9 was a good car to get parts off for my Panda. I was planning on stealing the wheels off a breaker's one when I got rid of the 4x4 and bought a Mk. 2 Golf GTi.
After my dad bought one, I always fancied the Rover Vanden Plas. It was the first car that I ever saw a V8 in and was one of the most luxurious vehicles I have ever been driven around in. Then my mum killed it. I remember wanting the salvage the engine out of it...
Lada Niva Cossack! Love em. Apparently you can still buy them new, but i'm not spending 10k on one!!

I fancied a Peugeot 405 Mi16 4x4, which you could get in NZ, but they didn't bring to Oz. T16 would be even better.
Galants/Legnums are ace. Face like a scottish granny playing bingo.
I had a Citroen BX which looked like that. It was the best ever car I've owned for long journeys, (and I was travelling for work back then, so it did plenty of them.) Finally got rid of it at 180k miles as the hydraulics were just too expensive. My cousin had a 16v one. Mental.
Anyhow, wanted one like this. Owned one briefly and would again, but arkward to Cary a bike.
[/img]
What's the second thing you posted, klunk?
I had a BX, one of the first ones. It was sh!te. Possibly due to being pre-owned by my dad, I don't know, the choke valve would stick open in cold or when it felt like it.
Should never had traded from the GSA. Did have a big carrying capacity though.
carver
went bust in 2009 (theres was a top gear review IIRC Clarkson liked it, lots of references to dope smoking dutch madness)
it was hamster
Alfa Romeo Montreal.
(Can't use image tools as it crashes safari!?!)
2.6l V8 and a new body on the chassis of the Giulia coupe. Not great to drive allegedly, but quite a looker ( in my 20 year old eyes at least)
On the BX thread within a thread, my BX16v was absoultely fantastic to drive with excellent brakes, superb combination of supple suspension and nearly neutral handling for a front driver and close to 150 hp/ton .... When it was working properly.
It even broke down on the way back home from picking it up for the first time- the pipe from high pressure pump to accumulator fractured, spraying hydraulic oil over the hot exhaust manifold. In the 10 months I owned it it was working as it should for about 6 weeks, but not consecutive weeks. When the same pipe fractured for a second time I decided we had to part company.
I also forgot this one. Maybe it was because we had it for a lovely fortnights honeymoon on the west of Scotland, maybe it was the quickest car I had driven to date, but by 'eck it was fun.
IIRC, it was a 2.0 petrol and Volcane model with uber stiff springs. Proper hot hatch territory that nearly had me into Loch Sunart more than once 😯
*Edit* Completely ballsed up a load of links. Harrumph.
Sorry about that. Ignore me, carry on....
One of those great big Peugeot Estates from the 70/80's.
Liked my Galant Sport Estate, lovely V6 noise, but not the most commodious of estates....
Shame I had to get rid of it, but it would have broken my heart to have scrapped it. But my mate I sold it to did have to. Bloody crappy undersealing meant rust did for it.
I'd loved to have had a Ford Sierra XR8, sounds like proper fun!
Uniquely, the South African market also saw the introduction of a 5.0 litre XR8 between June 1984 and 1988. A limited number of 250 Sierras were made for the purposes of homologation,[12] as this model was the premier Ford used in Group A racing. The XR8 was fitted with the 302 ci engine from the US Ford Mustang, and the Borg Warner T5 heavy duty transmission. Front brakes were AP Racing four-piston calipers on 280 mm discs. Max power is 209 PS (154 kW) and a top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph) was claimed.[13] The XR8 is easily recognized by having four cooling slats between the headlights, whereas lesser versions were sold with the original smooth front.

I imagine it would have been a nice relaxed cruiser with that big engine, but probably slower and worse handling than a Sierra Cosworth because of the weight of the engine over the front wheels. I picture random swings between horrible understeer and brown underpants oversteer.
EDIT: just re-read the title f the thread...ODD not OLD!!
As for Golf VR6s.
I owned one, I loved it, but it wasn't great - even forgetting for a moment that my particular one caught fire at 80mph and tried to kill me.
The early ones (before they lost the GTI arches and went all boring looking) were terribly made, honestly, VW is meant to be a byword for robustness but I've never owned a car that would rust as easily, mine would have been 8-9 years old when I got it, so far from new, but the rust was really bad by that stage.
The engine made a great sound and it drove really nicely at normal speeds, the gearbox was as nice as any today and it didn't matter what gear you were in it just drove along, but it was stupidly heavy at the front and ran softer, higher suspension than the GTIs which made it handle poorly so it didn't really like all that B-Road tomfoolery. It was never meant as a above-GTI performance car. In Germany they were sold as Motorway cruisers, not really drivers cars.
It made 174bhp which is quite a lot even now, but not from a 2.8 litre engine and the extra weight and VERY long gearing meant it wasn't really any faster than the 16v GTI and it was EPICLY thirsty, the little readout used to say 23-25mpg for me most of the time if I took it easy, but it lied - real world it was barely doing 20mpg so it cost a lot to run, even more if it broke because so many parts were VR6 specific and cost 3 or 4 times the cost of even GTI parts.
I always had a thing for the boxy Volvo's of the 80's and 90's ever since riding in a friends dads Volvo 740 Turbo.
This is the one I wanted:

And it's the one I bought 2 weeks ago!
It's absolutely awesome. Has every electrical option and works perfectly, great leather interior.

Best of all, it has the awesome Volvo red block engine, 2.3 turbo petrol.
And it's rear wheel drive - even better!
It goes like a narrow boat in a trebuchet.
Back in 1987 i tried everything in my power to get my Dad to buy one of these...

Instead, he bought a knackered old Ford Escort. I don't think I fully appreciated the difference in cost....
That Argyll earlier......the hexagonal tail lights were from the Datsun Cherry, the dashboard from Volvo, the steering wheel from the Triumph Dolomite, the door handles from the Morris Marina.
🙂

Should have called it the Mongryll then. 😀
Still wanted one.
Ooh, now you're talking. You have me thinking now, I wonder if C6's are sensible money yet...
Looking at it now, it would probably make a pretty good bike wagon.
IIRC the rear opening was too small and it was a bit cramped in the back too. Bloody quick mind. 😀
My mum had the coolest (my view as a boy) cars when I was growing up. She had several capri's, a triumph spitfire, a rover P5 coupe, a couple of xj6's one of which was a beautiful pinky colour, An xr3i convertible, and a 306 convertible to name a few.
If we are talking big money I have always lusted after a Lamborghini miura and the jag E type, two of the best looking cars ever made. If we are talking More affordable cars, a karmann ghia or bmw 2002.
Honda Hrv 's - one of the most reliable cars ever built - bit sluggish not very good mpg - - but utterly dependable.
Had a test drive in Lada Niva - ye gods - agricultural is not the word - plastic windows as well.
Fiat - ex had one of these - piece of crap - multiple electrical gremlins - e.g twin sunroofs that conked out in the open position simultaneosly - took about 250 turns of the emergency handle for each to close - would only idle if aircon on or off and numerous other idiosyncrasies. When it was running it was very comfortable and handled well for the bulk

With coils all round, I thought it was quite good for a 4x4, basic on the inside and a crap heater. I was lucky as mine had glass.
For me, I always had a soft spot for one of these.

Ah, odd, that makes more sense.
Used to see those huge wedge shaped lagonda's surprisingly quite often as a kid. but what a really wanted as a tiny person was a VW dune buggy.
I had 3 XM V6. First one was a dog and next 2 excellent. I really enjoyed owning them. I do fancy a SM though. Great looking machines
In the late 70s a chap in our village used to own one of these Talbots - as a kid I thought it was dead cool!...
...can't say I'd want one now though!
And you'd be right. The boss of a place I worked years ago bought one because he fancied a 4x4 and was a cheapskate; it was horrible. But then, this was a boss who bought Ladas as company cars... 🙄
I have long had a real desire for one of these:
No pics, but
Mk1 Opel Manta
Bmw 2002
Citroen 2cv (which we did own and great fun it was)
Let me bring things back on track;
Gosh, that's a Fuego isn't it. There's a car that'd completely escaped my memory until just then.
I went through a phase of wanting one of these:
... after I found out that they did a "GRi" model which had a 1.9L engine (which I assumed at the time was the same as the mighty 205GTi) and an insurance group which was free with cornflakes.
[s]Luckily[/s] Sadly they were pretty thin on the ground so I never owned one.
