Panic! It's only a few weeks off and we don't have any plans.
Should we (mum dad and 8 year old) go to Braemar with the bikes and look for some easy cycle routes and maybe some easy Munros (+ a sneaky gravel ride for me and get Ben Macdui ticked)? Just because someone suggested that here is some easy Munros around Glenshee.
Or something warmer, abroad that involves snorkelling (might get a bit bored).
Sunshine every time!
No kids at school anymore but we're off to Dubai for a few days to see one of my daughters - £120 return flights for the two of us as she works for Emirates!
(Wouldn't go in half term normally but it's when she's got 4 consecutive days off and we've not seen her since she went out there.)
Get him booked into a Ridelines Glentress course (3 days) , frees you up to do what you want. Or Dirtschool who also do similar.
Kids half-term course's.
Scottish tattie week weather can **** right off.
Off to Italy for some sun before the clocks go back.
Bit of cheeky self promotion but my FoD holiday cottage is available for half term 20th - 29th as we've had a last minute cancellation, if anyone fancies a week of muddy off piste instead! AirBnB link in my profile
Scotland.
Any other answer is incorrect*
(*other's may disagree but I'm right 😉.)
Other Scottish option is Aviemore side of the Cairngorms. Macdui is equally doable / long slog from Glenmore as Braemar but the low level routes for bikes and walking are a bit more extensive if weather is less perfect and there are more bad weather options (cinema, swimming pools, etc.) on that side. I think it's a more family holiday friendly location.
The 'easy' Munros from Glenshee can still be a slog if you have a child that isn't up for it.
It's a couple of years since we did a family holiday there but we found that renting a house or flat for a week in Aviemore was normally cheaper than a chalet or log cabin despite being larger with working heating etc. I don't know how it works out now airb&b has become the dominant booking system.
I stayed at Green acres Haven in Porthmadog last half term with my 7 yr old. Had a bloody great time and will be going back next year. Plenty biking (llandegla, coed y brenin nearby) plenty site seeing, couple of free kids ranger type activities and she bloody loved the disco every night with the sea-side squad. £250 in a really decent caravan for the mon-fri, I thought it was a bargain for the amount of enjoyment.
Appreciate this isn't one of the options you requested, but hey ho, recommend what you know!
Yeah toying wth Aviemore and checking out the bike park conveyor thingy. Just think she might be up for these Glenshee Munros and not sure of anything like that round Aviemore?
Now I'm intrigued Mick. So you're planning on biking some Munros at Glenshee with an 8 year old kid at the end of November?
She must be nails. I've taken my kids on some adventures but defo left them at home for the Glenshee Munros, even when they were 12 or 13 ( my memory fails me)
Admittedly it was an evening ride, vhaving done Moronne with the kids earlier that day. And I did do 5 Munros that evening. But I'd not have taken the kids at that age. The LRT from the ski carpark is hellish. Nothing like the Cairngorm one.
Serious respek!
(Assuming she enjoys it)
,<Pre post edit as I've reread your two posts.. just realised that though you plan on cycling and taking the kid up some Munros, you didn't explicitly say you were planning on her biking up the Munros 🙂

If you do plan on biking a Munro them I recommend getting dropped of at Glenshee carpark then going over the plateau to Sagairt Mor. Iirc it is only a few hundred m of ascent, then you get the full loch callater descent awesomeness.
No, you got it right the first time, she is nails and she just uses SPDs on the Follow Me and does a lot of screaming. 🙂
Ok, I will explain, I am looking for several activities:
1 - easy Munros to walk up with an 8 year old (she has 1 so far but would like a few more, if in the right mood :-))
2- easy disused railway type routes for family cycling
3 - nice gravel ride for me to sneak out at 7am and do on my own (unless I take an MTB instead)
4 - maybe sneak off and add something like Ben Macdui on my own (probably walking)
The easiest Munro from Aviemore will be Cairngorm itself, by parking at the ski centre. There's also the Corbett of Meall a Bhuachaille. Has the best views of the Northern Corries.
Family cycling on the Speyside Way and lots of easy forest tracks. Cafes at Kincraig and Loch Insh if heading South, Boat of Garten and Nethy Bridge if heading North.
Gravel rides aplenty depending on duration.
Ben Macdui can be approached in a couple of ways but isn't a huge day out. I did Macdui and Cairngorm in 4 hours last month.
If the weather is good then Ben Lawers she can claim two although is a tough walk even though your parked quite a few feet above loch Tay, Schiehallion is not too far away
Cycle from Killin to Lochearnhead or even Callander on old railway line
Comrie croft nearby, Ben Vorlich an easy walk but stretch your leg muscles first
Probably see the first snow lying on the Cairngorms in the distance
