I'm looking for a backup SIM for very occasional use.

Primarily I want it for Orange Wednesdays, though it'll also get very occasional use as a back-up provider in emergencies if I'm out in the sticks and have no O2 coverage. I'm not interested in data, minutes, or anything that involves monthly top-ups, I just want to get a SIM I can shove a tenner's credit on to and then shove in a drawer until the heat death of the universe.

I used to have an Orange SIM forever ago that did exactly this, but it's long since been disconnected due to inactivity. Looking at Orange / EE's websites for a replacement, it's not clear to me whether I can still do this sort of thing or if I have to tie in monthly payments.

Anyone got any clues?

Not tried for a few years but I think you have to be tied in [lost mine due to work changing] and they seem wise to why you might be exploiting them!!

They were always wise to it, they just never used to care.

I've got a Vodafone one for this reason. It's just a v old cheap phone that I ride with. Can't remember the last time I topped it up with a tenner. Probably over 3 years ago. Vodafone know I use it like this as they phoned it up a year ago to ask what I was doing with it.

Sadly, they don't yet do Vodafone Vednesdays.

My experience of Voda reception isn't great TBH. I used to have one for work and the signal where I lived was unusable, which was a problem when working from home. (Though of course, a back-up only phone only needs reception when your primary doesn't.)

Pretty sure any PAYG sim from WH SMith or the like should work.

With Vodaphone PAYG you have to make a call or send a text once every three months or they will cancel it and you loose the rest of your credit

I just set a reoccurring reminder on my main phone for 80 days. My £10 initial credit should last a long time 🙂
