What I thought was going to be an easy island hop to get from Oban to Kilchoan has been scuppered by the ferry being completely full on the Saturday we wish to travel. And with the Corran ferry being out of action we're now looking at going the long way round. So I'm hatching plan B, but need the advice of the STW experts please...

I'm thinking of dropping Mrs Pook and the 3 mini pooks (10, 8, 3) at Oban so they can get the ferry over to Craignure, bus to Tobermory, then ferry to Kilchoan. The thinking is that the travel sickness will be less on that leg, rather than round the top.

I'll then do the long drive round via Glenfinnan and meet them on the other side.

Am I mad? Are the buses reliable on Mull?

I'd just drive at a pace that wouldn't result in travel sickness*. Take your time, have breaks. It's a lovely drive.

Alternatively if you want to drop them off so that you can rip up the roads.... err don't do that either 😉

* Yeah, I know that some folk are very susceptible.

I have used buses on Mull a few years ago and they were fine.

But it is a lovely drive round although better on two wheels 🙂

I reckon take the family on the long route is the best option. They could do the trip from Oban-Craignure then Fishnish -lochaline but that'll leave you with a long trip to Kilchoan if that's your destination.

We stayed at Kentra Bay a couple of weeks back. The drive isn't much of a hardship and has some pretty great scenery and we saw white-tailed eagles every time we drove to Kilchoan.

The Corran Ferry broke the day before we were due to drive home and we just accepted the slightly longer drive time.

No problem with buses here as many locals depend on them but I would simply drive from Fort William-Glenfinnan-Lochailort-Acharacle-Kilchoan and not get involved in any unnecessary ferry trips. You can also enjoy the more scenic route across Rannoch Moor and Glencoe.

It's the Oban/Craignure ferry that's chocca.

Ferry

Should’ve come on Wednesday 😉 - all of 5 vehicles on there. FWIW Friday/Saturday the worst day because of the weekend changeovers

Do it the other way, get mrs pook to drive then you can take the bike and ride

But thinking practically, not going via oban at all will make the "longer" trip much less long in any case.
