Ive never been allergic to anything, but last night I had a reaction after eating brazil nuts. Face swollen and bright red along with breathing difficulties and dizzyness. The worst symptoms passes after approximately 15 mins. A couple of hours later I felt OK and went for a ride. It felt like I was bonking from the first pedal stroke, cold sweats, breathlessness and a general 'out of it' feeling I only managed 5 km before I aborted. Today I feel like I have a bad hangover. For context, I ate nuts the night before with no issues.

Has anyone had a sudden reaction to nuts out of the blue? Also, are the ride issues and hangover feeling all linked to the nuts? Pretty worried about it as I was on my own when the nut reaction occurred and thinking about what could have happened.

I’ve no experience of nut allergy but my advice would be to have a word with your doctor and get yourself a couple of epipen’s just as a precautionary measure.
The fact you got as far as difficulty breathing indicates you might have a problem.
All the best.

I would get checked out. You can develop allergies, but this is potentially serious, so off to the GP you go. A&E next time !

I have a colleague whose daughter is allergic to sesamie - it only needs to be in vapour (used in cooking) to trigger a serious attack - that means lots of precautions at school, and no going to restaurants.

I have a but allergy and would echo the above, a trip to the GP and having an epi-pen is no bad thing.
My allergy has got worse with age, from just wanting to be sick to anaphylaxis.
The hungover bit rings true as well, if I get it then I then I feel rubbish for a day or 2, so similar experience.

Brazil nuts triggered a tree nut allergy for me. Was a pretty bad reaction.
I didn't have an allergy before but after that reaction, walnuts closely followed by hazel nuts caused reactions. If someone has been cracking walnuts, I get hayfever type symptoms. Dread to think how bad it'd be I'd I ate a Brazil nut now.

I think it's because Brazil nuts contain the highest concentration of whatever people react to.

I'd have probably dialled 999 not knowing what was going to happen next and worrying I might pass out!

I am no expert, but I have read that allergies can come on suddenly (I read about cases of people suddenly becoming allergic to latex in surgical gloves / scratch cards etc, but I assume the same can be said for any allergy). I echo the above – go to see your doctor and don't eat any more nuts until you have done!

You should’ve called 999 straight away. If it happens again then do this. This is classed as a severe allergic reaction and is life threatening

See the GP! I developed a wheat allergy in my late teens that got worse and wasn't properly diagnosed until my mid to late twenties. Also get some anti histamine tablets and stash them everywhere, if you feel something beginning take one.

As above, recommsee GP. regarding hangover effect, perfectly normal, if you think about it, you have had a whole body assault and response, histamine release, fight or flight etc. I've fortunately not had anaphylaxis, but when my dust allergy kicks off it wipes me out for rest of day if don't get antihistamines un quick enough.
But definitely see doc, amd if ever comes on again 999 straight away, don't wait for it to get 'bad enough'.

Definitely see your GP and get a referral to get this investigated. Allergy referral times are long at present though, but see it through. Anyway, my daughter has a peanut allergy and carries epipens everywhere.

Thanks all. Spoken to the GP and he echoes the above advice.

I'm out of the 12 hr danger period and to ring 999 if it happens again. He also says that reactions get subsequently more severe, so don't eat any brazil nuts. He is also referring me for an allergy assessment.

Very scary.

Sudden reaction to nuts? Yes.

I love peanuts and have had 47 successful years eating them until 2 months ago. I'd eaten peanut butter sandwiches at work for lunch all week, got home friday and the father in law had been round and left a big bag of peanuts. Opened that and smashed them down. Sunday afternoon we finished the big bag. Eyes started itching, eyes went red, face went puffy, took anti-histamine and went for a lay down. Luckily no breathing issues, but I stayed puffed up for 2 days.

I put that down to over exposure, but two weeks later I tried peanuts again and my eyes immediately started itching.

No more peanuts for me.

Happened to a friend's son whilst on holiday. No previous issues with nuts, had a PB and jelly sandwich and got rushed into hospital due to his age and severity of reaction. Good job they had health insurance as this was in the states.

If it makes the op feel any better, it's a lot easier to live with a nut allergy now than it was in the eighties. It didn't seem to be taken very seriously.
Food labels are marked and food factories have strict control over allergens.

People are finally starting to get the difference between a tree nut allergy and a peanut allergy too.

The main thing I do that's different and a habit that's stuck, is I never have desert when eating out as that was always when I got caught out when nobody gave it a thought.
Probably unnecessary these days.

I've mentioned on here before, my Oh has a cupboard of doom. Tree nuts stay in sealed containers and she only eats them at work.

As mentioned above packaging these days are well marked for anything you may be allergic to although some like Markies used to take the piss and have practically everything marked down as "may contain peanuts" which I assume is just an arse covering exercise.

One of our kids developed a peanut allergy when she was a baby and the others various different ones which they all seem to have grown out of apart from the peanut one. We did learn though that it may not be a single thing that triggers the allergy it could be if for instance you had a strawberry then later had the Brazil and the combination of the 2 may set off the reaction not the nuts alone, but I wouldnt be experimenting.

I am of course to blame for the kids allergies according to the wife due to my dodgy genes as when I got tested when I was around 6 or 7 both arms lit up with the tests.

why are nuts now called tree nuts?

Someone above mentioned epipens... plural, this is a good idea if you are out and about because they only last about 10 minutes before you start needing another.

I have a nut allergy, it went from a mild annoyance as a kid and has become severe enough that it's murder death kill in 10 mins. Different nuts have different scale of reactions.
You're getting a allergy test form the doc which is good.

Mild reactions I can get buy with making myself sick them chewing gum to help distract myself and confuse the taste. Anti acids as well as I get terrible indigestion. And yes I feel rotten for a sold day or two after, hungover is a good description
If I've ingested the nut then it's epi pen time and 999. Thankfully I've rarely got this bad as as soon as I've had something with nuts it's the same sensation as sticking a square battery on your tongue metallic tingle, so it's spit it out then go be sick #classy

People are a lot more switched on and realize the allergy is a thing and your not being fussy. But flip side we have more nut products, vegan cafe is a no no for me for instance. And I almost got caught out once with a cocktail that had nut bitters in it that I would never have guessed, thankfully a friend spotted it being made and swiped it out my hand as I was away to sip it

message me if you need to know any specifics or handy hints/tips I've picked up along the way

They aren't necessarily, just the ones that grow on trees. What we generally call nuts includes a wide range of things that are biologically unrelated. Peanuts for example are legumes like peas and beans, but almonds are the stones from a soft fruit related to apricots and peaches.

So you can be allergic to some but not others. And I guess tree nuts are a common enough allergy to be given their own allergy category but I'm not sure why as cashews, Brazil nuts, almonds and hazelnuts would seem to be biologically quite different.

Allergies is something you develop after exposure to an allergen, you can’t get them until you’ve been exposed previously. Speak to your GP let them know you’ve had a reaction, initially that could be done by online or phone consultation, if they need more they’ll arrange something.

why are nuts now called tree nuts?

They always have. Ground nuts are peanuts aren’t actually nuts, just to add to the confusion.

To distinguish them from peanuts?

A girl I knew had a bad enough reaction to peanuts that her lips would swell up if her boyfriend had been eating peanuts

Me Almond. Never had that before but lately if I eat them I get very "itchy" throat, feeling weird (dizzy) and cold sweet but after 10 mins I am fine and continue eating. No problem eating other nuts.

I can tell you that at a cereal factory I've done work at they have different colour hairnets for nut and nut safe production lines and are very careful to prevent cross contamination.
I assume if a factory can't completely isolate between the two lines or can't prove they have to the buyer then they mark the food as 'may contain traces of whatever'.

Well, I still don't feel right. Still got a 'hangover' and a funny taste in my mouth.

Going to be very careful from now on.
