I get a lot of colds which go for my throat and stop me exercising for 10 days to shift them. When I'm fatigued my throat feels similarly, so I think it's a weak spot.

Where to go to get advice on anything that can be done? I don't want to spend a fortune on quacks.

Is it someone else near who's a bit of a Typhoid Mary?

Friend into running spent most of last year recovering from bronchial infections. They did everything according to GP advice, didn't start running until fully recovered and then came down with another.

Put it down to a job working with the filthy public and their germ factory children in the end.

A Sports Medicine GP is probably your best bet – they look at things from an athletic perspective rather than your levels are ok for someone who is pretty inactive. I have used a Sports Medicine GP (based in Edinburgh) for blood tests for vitamin D (have been on vit D tabs via prescription since the results). If you don’t want tests, then probiotics, vitamin D, sleep quality and hydration are things to look at on top of good diet and your recovery routine post exercise. Glutamine also is meant to help immunity.

FWIW I’m thinking of going back for tests because almost a year to the day for the last 4 years I end up on antibiotics and am keen to get to the bottom of it because it ruins a chunk of my racing season and I think blood tests would be the only way of finding out what’s going on in the month before I end up on them. Let me know if you want her details.

I'd say wash your hands and wrists.

Working on horrible sweat laden bikes all day. Bleurgh.

In terms of diet I'm sceptical of anything other than a well balanced diet being needed to be healthy but it's your money

Have you ever had tonsillitis? I had it many years ago and ever since get regular minor flare ups when run down or over tired. They get pitted after the first infection and become more vulnerable to reinfection. A common problem is post-nasal drip where snot is constantly slowly dripping down the back of your nose, exiting into the throat at the tonsils and essentially feeding bacteria in your tonsils. I was given a steroid nasal spray in an attempt to stop this but you have to take it for ages and it's rank so I gave up. Anyway, possibly worth seeing if anything could be leading to your tonsils getting pissed off. I've just had flu and my tonsils are currently golf balls and I'm totally wiped out, wish i'd had them out as a kid!

Immunity starts in the gut. Heal the gut and your problems will disappear.

as someone who almost never gets a cold, I've had about four this year, all featuring sore throats and needing lower gears up hills etc. I think there is just a nasty bug on the loose.

Interesting. Think I've had tonsillitis but not had them out.

I don't work on bikes anymore, and this has been with me for a good decade+
