About to set up a PC at home and I need to set myself up as admin and Son as a user. I am "ok" at setting this kind of stuff but not brilliant so looking for an idiots guide to:

1) control net content access - he is only 13 - we are with BT and I know their provision comes with some type of system to set net filters.

2) control the time he can use the PC, or at least limit time on the net. Easy to say tell him not to, but this time limitation is / has been a BIG issue so I am looking for a way to hard wire the time spent on a daily basis.

Cheers

S

Most routers have options - give it a fixed IP then block that IP outside of certain times.
Windows family safety is handy
Lots of other options in windows and most antivirus, etc
Personally would stay as far away from Norton as possible though - massively resource hungry and bloats the system

Windows 7 (and I guess 8.1) has parental controls to control access time. I've never used it so can't say how well it works.

Windows family safety. You can set time limits and restrict access to sites. I didn't bother restricting the sites with my lad (teenager), he knows I can see what pages he's been on so behaves fairly well with it.

Turn the wifi router off or change the password after a certain time of day. The wifi password can also be used as a bribe to complete their chores.

tbh The only way to really 'control' access is let him understand why - so you need to explain.

Also, locate the PC in the Lounge/Kitchen etc, so usage is visible.

Stick the wifi router in your bedroom on a timer switch.....
