Does it happen to anyone else. I'm not talking about all at the same time, or both on one side (which would be worrisome sign of a stroke). I'm talking about an individual limb which wakes up as soon as you move it, you get that horrible pins and needles sensation, and after 30 seconds or so all is good.
I know everyone gets it occasionally. Its caused by nerve compression and is considered benign. However I've been getting it more and more over past 12 months. Nearly always in an arm but occasionally in a leg. Bit worried it's to do with further deteriation to my spine that was diagnosed 2 years ago. Any one else get this, and if so any way to combat it?
Ta
B12 deficiency causes spinal degradation and nerve damage. It can also be harder to detect if you exercise a lot.
Numb hand would make for an interesting way to deal with early morning wood.
I can get it in my arms due to past injuries, and one on-going injury caused by compressed nerves from swelling (bursitis and tendonitis).
May well be worth a visit to the docs.
Maybe your mattress is too soft?
this may cause your spine to bend too much, pinching nerves.
ultimately, the back issues which result from a soft mattress manifest as a sore neck.
Yeah I'd look at your matress first, especially if you're a side sleeper... too soft a matress plays havock with me.
how old is your matress?
My mattress ain't the best tbh. Although the leg one was when it was staying in a hotel so not my mattress. I have one of those orthopedic pillow things, not sure it helps
Anyone ever had it in the leg? Seems a bit rarer, but it must be the same mechanism, given the sensation when it comes back online is identical
Not to belittle your issue, which sounds a right PITA and which I hope you get sorted, I add the following for light relief. I normally sleep on my back or side, but sometimes roll onto my front in my sleep, with both arms beneath me. I then wake up, unable to move or feel my arms until they gradually develop the excruciating pins and needles pain. I'm paralysed because neither arm works so I can't right myself to relieve the pain, this causes absolute panic and terror.
It's at this point I usually start squealing like a pig, waking my horrified wife. Then in my sleepy stupor, mounting panic and agony, I eventually realise I can sort of roll my body side to side like a beached walrus, with my lifeless arms flailing to eventually free them and get onto my back. The minute or so it takes for the blood flow to return is absolute torture.
Mrs Bloke always comments fondly about these episodes in the morning and absolutely does not think I'm a freakish grunting oaf who should sleep in the garage for the sake of her sanity.
I've hit myself in the face many a time. It was funny at first, but not so much now. The arm weighs alot more than you think!
Sometime when I lie on it it's fairly obvious why it goes numb. But I've been getting it more and more recently whereby I've just had my arm in a position that has caused it, ie elbow bent across my chest or above my head.
The dead arm doesn't bother me so much, but the fact it's happening more and more (coupled with other stuff that suggests my cervicle spine ain't in great shape) means I'm going to have to go back to the neurologist to check it's not deteriorated further.
Hopefully the leg was a one off, as that's not associated with the neck, so fingers crossed the lower spine ain't goosed at all
Getting old sucks..
I really hope you get some answers. Getting old certainly does suck, but it's better than the alternative! 👍
I've had it along with horrible joint pain (elbows especially). It was much improved by a new mattress, not completely but much better. Side sleeper and had a mattress that was too hard causing lack of support. Got a softer mattress after sleeping really well on a softer one while on holiday. Stretching also helps for me so I don't go to bed so tight.
I suffer from this a lot in both arms. Rarely in the legs.
Ive had it for years (over 10). Had x rays and nerve tests at the hospitals. docs have no idea and its horrible. I think it stemmed from a drunken bet where i ended up smacking my neck on a tiled floor (won the bet though)
It gets it worse if i lift my hands above my head.
horrible and a lot of pain. I wake up 2-3 times a night with it.
OP
Could it be a circulation thing?
Probably worth a phone in to talk through it with a GP ,hope you get it sorted out.
On a lighter note.. @blokeuptheroad if you haven't seen the opening scene in Killing Eve( first episode) ,when Eve wakes up,worth checking out 😊
Rarely in the legs
Yeah, i rarely get it in the legs, I think its way harder to get yourself in a position that brings it on, sleeping at least.
Could it be a circulation thing?
I doubt it..I mean it could be but my physio seems to think it's the nerves. As mentioned, my spinal canal is like that of a 70 year old..
Tbh the numb arms whilst sleeping is the least of my concerns. I can't ride my bike due to it aggravating my neck. I can't even play guitar without feeling dizzy given the position I'm in when doing so..
@Blokeuptheroad - glad it’s not just me - was reading this thread thinking about my experiences of double numb arms - it’s the pathetic rolling I have to do to get back on my front - I imagine it would be very funny to be a fly on the wall! Then the horrible pins and needles for a minute as sensation returns! I find sitting up speeds it along.
Sorry OP your thing doesn’t sound fun!
Struggled with a numb left arm when lying on left side in bed around Xmas and New year. Then went through phase where I had to be careful with left arm, due to pain spikes. Then simply had reduced movement range that's ongoing, but improving slowly, especially raising arm in front of body.
Turned out to be frozen shoulder.
