Now I'm regularly riding in the dark..... It's bloody annoying that to turn the backlight on for the dark there's lots of button pressing .... Huge backwards step from the 500 !

Am I missing something ? Why can't I just press one button to turn on the backlight??

I normally just use the up / down buttons and it turns on.

Or I leave it on if I'm not going far

Yeah, mine is always set to on. Then you can just use the up down buttons to adjust the amount of backlight until sunrise.

Now i might be wrong but does pressing power not turn it on? Older ones you used to just tap the screen
Also says hit any key to turn it on

As per those instructions, press and hold power turns it off. Just press and release power gets you to the backlight adjustment screen... This adjusts it once and sets it. Any other time you want back light on, just press any key. If brightness is set to min, you might not notice the backlight

I came from a 705 and miss so much about the navigation around the device.

You're right, as far as I can tell the light button only affects the brightness of the screen, but not the back light. On the 705, the little joystick used to control the backlight. As above though, I just have the backlight set to on buried in the menus, and the brightness at 60 or 70%; the battery seems good enough for that for long day (can't remember my last long day, mind).

My biggest gripe probably only affects me, but I wish the back and enter button were the other way around. I instinctively want to press the back button when I mean enter.

It's a great little device apart from that mind.
