I think it was only a matter of time after they stuck Jo Whiley on the show with him.

I called it the moment Jo joined, in fact I’m sure this was the plan the whole time.

Still suits me, I like Jo and asking her to be involved in such nonsense as the Muppet Song was just odd.

I like Jo Whiley, her evening show was great

I like Simon Mayo, his drivetime show was great

Jo and Simon on drivetime together didn't work

Radcliffe & Maconie is another "let's change and make things better" situation that seems to have been similarly ill-conceived

Yeah it is absolutely horrendous to listen to. They don't even seem to like each other, let alone have any chemistry.

Never liked Simon Mayo, no real loss!

Ohh 😳

I don’t get to listen to the drive time show so I’m not that concerned.

On the occasions I did listen to it I found the pattern and format a bit at odds with each presenter.

Simon with his old crew was good.

Jo in her evening show was good.

Simon on his own is good.

Simon and Jo sounded cliched and forced.

I hope she carries on with the drive time slot though, because dear God R2 needs more Women on it in the daytime FerrrrChristsake...🤨

Only positive I can see (I've enjoyed Mayo in the evening) is that Sara Cox might be willing to do this slot, where I'm pretty sure she turned down the breakfast show. I would be quite happy with this.

Inevitable. Getting paired with Jo Whiley is the radio equivalent of getting pulled into a black hole. No entertainment can escape from that.

I expect the bosses have just got the listener figures back and are quite happy to end their partnership too...

She's moving to a new evening show, so the drive time slot sounds like it will get a fresh start.

My money's on Sara Cox for the drivetime show. They came under a lot of flak for having an all male day time lineup, so they stuck Jo Whiley in there, I can't imagine having moved her back out to the evening (probably a good thing IMO, she was good there) they'll stick another bloke back in the schedule.

They're both strong individual presenters, it's how each of them has pretty much always presented. Putting them together was just the BBC trying to force a square peg (more female representation on R2) into a round hole (a show that was working absolutely fine as it was, which would never work with two such strong presenters together in it).

Mayo is a superb broadcaster, quite understated but very on point, putting him with Whiley has been a disaster. Zero chemistry.

Seems Jo’s going to evenings, if that’s not an admission that it didn’t work I don’t know - still might be a decent listen when I’m cooking diner, Radio X is becoming a chore, same 6/8 songs everyday, same adverts too.

I’d love Coxy for drive time, I was hoping she’d get breakfast.

Thank heavens for that. An awful show. I loved the earlier format, but the two of them together just didn't work for me. I enjoyed Jo's evening show, but there was spark between them.

Sorry that Mayo is leaving, Sarah Cox gets my vote for the replacement.

Just typical of the Bedb to constantly alter things. Change for changes sake. You'd think they'd have learned something by now.

I'm reckon she did, but turned it down due to the enormous disruption of an early morning show to her family. An evening show might not be any better for her, but I hope otherwise...

Good. He's the smuggest man in Britain, just in front of Mark Kermode.

I like Jo Whiley, but she's much more suited to the early evening music slot.

His interviews were good, but the self congratulatory 'bantz' between him and Kermode make me nauseous.

Plus his 'I'm far too important to move to Salford' schtick made him look like an arsehole.

Have to admit to enjoying listening to Simon, think he comes across as calming, knowledgable and amusing, which is what I need on my drive home from work.
Not a fan of "Coxy". A little too in your face for me. I just don't think she would be a good fit for the Radio 2 Drive time audience. She seems to be the complete opposite of Mayo, noisy in a me me me way, doesn't come across as being particularly bright and not very amusing.

Also like Jo though, would have liked for her to get the gig solo. Again she's someone else who doesn't appear to make the show about her, she makes the show about the listeners, the music and her guests. I honestly thought she could have grown into the role and developed it for herself.

And completely agree about Steve Wright, he must have some dark secrets on the BBC big wigs otherwise surely he'd have been booted to local radio years ago.

It's weird, when they're not on I realise Robbie Collin is a far FAR better film reviewer than Kermode, at least on the radio. But as a show Mayo and Kermode is a far better show than any of the substitutes.

I’m far too important to move to Salford’ schtick

What, the: "I don't want to uproot my family for a radio show." schtick? If putting your family over your career makes you an arsehole, then fair enough. Considering he then landed the R2 drivetime show, and they let him carry on doing stuff for R5L, I'd say he probably assessed the situation pretty well.

I know, he went right on up in my estimations when he said that.

I mean, who would want to move to Salford willingly ?

We live in a world of remote working and the Beeb have been doing such for decades. Even to the point of installing studios in people’s back gardens..

There was a DJ recently who resigned who had his studio in some remote corner of Scotland.. the bloke had been at the Beeb, on the radio, for something like 50 years..

Just because the Beeb moved to MadChester to take advantage of cheap housing and rental costs doesn’t mean all employees should up sticks and wander North with a picnic on a stick jauntily swaying over thier right shoulder.

Was a bit shocked by the announcement early today, but it didn't surprise me after the reshuffle snafu...

I'm no fan of Whiley but accept she's good in the evening timeslot hanging out with all the cool names - but find her a bit Too Cool for School for my liking.

Mayo, however, i find very easy to listen to and the Confessions podcast has been required listening for yonks.

And i'm sooo relieved that the Church will continue with the good Doctor!

...so it's a continued Hello to Jason Isaacs/FairportConvention/Focus etc ;0)

How very dare she have been presenting radio shows since the early 90’s, playing the best indie rock and pop, before anyone else had even heard of most of those artists, and retain her enthusiasm for it. Such people should never be allowed near a radio studio, they might play something interesting!

Desmond Carrington! Yeah, that’s the guy.

You can tell what time I get up sometimes to head out to work 🤣

Salford I’m sure, somewhere in there, is a decent enough place. But moving your whole family to a County where no-one understands the language or accent, is frankly outrageous (innit) 😜

The studios over the road from Somerset House (Aldwich) are still owned by the Beeb.. it’s where the World Service is broadcast from.. sure there’s space in that mahoosive building?

Anyway, Jo definitely suits early evening... only slightly miffed that the early evening Jazz/Country shows are being pushed back to post 9pm now..

Oh well..

I recently listened to Simon Mayo being interviewed about his new book and having sold the film rights to it etc. He came across really well, really animated and he's quite an interesting bloke. His radio show however is dreadful, clearly he's just been treading water for the last couple of years there. Actually after listening to the interview I said to my wife I wonder how long he'll keep on doing the radio show, doesn't sound like he needs it or enjoys it. Not long it turns out. Good luck to him.

I also do think putting Jo with him was to shoehorn him out. Shame she had to be the one, she's a good DJ.

Which sounds in complete contrast to Wittertainment which he sounds genuinely happy to be doing, though I've never heard a drive show come naturally.

I also have to say he is the only DJ from radio who I've won something from, 2 tickets to Baz's R&J which due to Diana funeral didn't get through in time and 3 CD's from one of his pick 3 records things in about 97!!

LTL I think, a lot of this probably depends on when you grew up, I realised when Lamo did his & Jo's 205 years on the BBC that they had covered from the point I discovered music and had my own room - I think they were the ones who told me this grunge bloke killed himself back in 94.

Years ago, KB had a chap on Popmaster and while they were doing the usual pre-quiz chat, Ken asked the chap what he got up to in his spare time - "I run the "We Hate Steve Wright Club"". There was a glorious moment of silence, before Ken coughed and got straight into the quiz without any further comment.

Noone has yet mentioned the best show on R2 yet - Johnny Walker's Sounds of the 70s. This happens to be my favourite decade for music and Walker has (quite literally) been there and done pretty much everything, so his commentary tends to be both witty and acerbically informed.

That went to an 11pm midweek slot sometime ago

Desmond Carrington (aka MC Desmo) sued to do the 7pm friday slot and it was always interesting, his breadth of music was fabulous. Tony Blackburn does the Golden Hour in that slit now and although different it's still a great show. he then does sounds of the 60s at 6am on satruday. Glad that moved, didn;t like the previous chap.

Ken Bruce is ace

RadMac to move from 6 music for the drive time slot? Chance would be a fine thing...

And this kind of "helpful feedback" is why he's off. She's not awful, shes a damned good DJ - as is Simon. They just don't work together in that slot. If you read what Simon wrote, the change to a pairing was forced on him, so he chose to work with Jo.

Two pages of R2 discussion and not a mention of Jeremy Vine? I'd happily see the back of him right after we've had Steve "no G" Wright taken out back and shot. Smug git who isn't half as bright as he thinks he is, seems to want to be a controversial interviewer by getting intelligent guests on and then countering their discussion with really stupid antagonistic points. And who TF chooses his topics de jour? "Today we'll be discussing whether vaccines cause autism, and the strange appearance of a blue post box in Putney." I'll bet one of my lesser used internal organs that he's a closet brexiter too.

Maybe replace him with his brother?

What really worries me is their choice of stand in presenters.....I mean Craig Charles!!! He's just appalling and I have to change channels.

I like Zoe and the Steve Wright show is just harmless fun, with some great music, but never really Like Simon Mayo. Jeremy Vine, hmmm....I think the format is more irritating than him, as they discuss some right old bollox on slow news days.

No, the presenter is the more irritating of that equation for sure.

I’m happy to report that when Jeremy Vine comes on the airwaves I turn him off, likewise the stupid gameshow patter he produces on the TV.

I do wonder as a % who is the “bestest” and who is the “worstest”

Craig Charles lacks charisma but plays some awesome tunes!

Jeremy Vine i like

Mayo i quite like too, and Kermode - but i do look forward to the weeks when they are not there! id really like one of them to go away at once with a stand in, rather than always both at the same time. id also like it if they had a permanent second critic to challenge Kermode. like when they used to have Boyd and Floyd on. James king was good, what happened to him? Robbie Collins is good too. Doc Brown is my fave stand in for Mayo. DB, Kermode and Collins - that would be a right show!!

i find myself listening to Wittertainment out of habit these days, and pressing the +15 seconds button quite a lot!! i like what they have to say but its all the ****y sycophantic listener correspondence, addled with in-jokes and catchphrases, which is unbearable.

who walks out of a cinema, goes home and writes a 3 page email about the film with no guarantee that it'll get read out? weirdos

It's just baffling what he's doing on the station. It's a music station, but they give 3(? I try to avoid at all costs) to a wannabe shock jock for the audio Jeremy Kyle show. Ditch him for a decent DJ, female if possible.

As for Craig Charles, I won't hear a word against him, he's excellent. He definitely does better in particular timeslots - Saturday night he's on fire, and when he stands in for Keaveny in the mornings he's good, but he clearly does a lot of prep to make those shows top notch.

I too am a fan of Craig Charles Funk/Soul show, granted its a late evening show so best listened to then than in the daytime.

Thing is he has a stigma attached that will taint his rise in the Beeb.

And yeah, in the daytime he’s a bit of an oddball.

Craig Charles is good, yeah his chat is sometimes mince but the tunes are good and he does come across as enthusiastic.

Vine or show? Both. Doesn't matter who the stand in is it's just drivel for the easily led. Once Ken Bruce is by it's off till Mayo, R4 occasionally getting a look in (unless I forget and accidentally catch Craig Charles standing in for the blob)

Hold on a minute lads, I think I have an idea.

Keep the Vine show, but replace him with Danny Dyer. Would laave to 'ear 'im tell some question dodging cahnt to get the the effin' point. Then a rant about arrogant ducks.

I thought the Simon Mayo show was great - foodie Thursday, book club, all request Friday - was just nice easy listening and entertaining. Wiley made it unbearable so just listen to 6 Music now and never looked back so not complaining.

Wiley is fine by herself - the Mayo/Wiley combo just didn't work.

Sarah Cox sounds like a good move but doubt I'll ditch 6 Music now.

Oh, and Ken Bruce is a legend!
