The city has been closed off. Major incident.
Stay safe everyone.

No real information on what's happened, but a few people look to have lost their life.
Went to drop off the other half at the tram stop this morning and the car park was very empty, we then got told services were suspended by someone there. Got home and then read the news. Very odd indeed, I wonder what the motive was.
Its the top end of the city that is closed off, down here at the station end all is fine, though everyone is feeling surprised and a bit concerned. No obvious additional activity looking out from my ivory tower, or when i came in on the train.
I didn’t know anything about it till a colleague said he'd walked past the cordon.
No one knows more than is in the news at the moment. Better ring my mum before she starts worrying though!
Having popped out for my lunchtime caffeine fix, we now have 3 security guards in the foyer rather than 2, couple of police officers by the station which isn’t that unusual, 200° is practically empty so the baristas are stepping up the latte art and the blueberry and lemon loaf is delicious
was on the motorway around Loughborough and saw about 4 or 5 unmarked police cars hurtling their way north. Was intrigued to know what could cause such a response and where it was.

Might pop in later for an iced latte!
Glad I got the train in this morning, no disruption there.
@MoreCashThanDash - sounds like you work very near me!
its this possibly

Trams were closed on the North side due to a derailment at Bulwell yesterday, which also damaged the overhead lines, so a large section of it has to be isolated while they repair it.
The van driver is rumoured to be gang or drug related. I cannot see your typical nutter going out at 4am to kill people, so there is likely to be some prior involvement between the deceased and the perp.

@crazy-legs small world! If you'd gone to 200° earlier I'm even wearing the STW lockdown shirt today
Maybe get you an iced latte sometime!
Just getting an iced latte from Hopkinsons! Their new kitchen is open. 👌
I've not been in there, will give it a try. I'm now slightly worried we may know each other, after all the years on here!
BBC coverage is doing it's usual thing of lots of live feeds and eye witness reports telling us basically nothing new.
This feels a bit too close to home. BBC are reporting that two of people who died were students at UON. My son has just finished his second year there and I bought him back Saturday. Can’t imagine the anguish and despair of the poor parents whose kids won’t be coming back. Heartbreaking.

Very close to home as I’m in Beeston right next to the Uni but thankfully it was over before we had a chance to be worried - didn’t even know anything was up until I was already at work in Derby.

Gbeebies reporting west African migrant with a history of violence, footage of suspect being tasered. No speculation on motive as yet. So sad.
Played right into the hands of the right wing media. They were probably hoping the perpetrator was someone with brown skin.

There were some pretty vile comments on social media almost immediately the news about the attacks broke.
Was weird because police initially just said "a major incident" and updated about closed roads, no tram service etc which I read about as I was travelling to work in Nottingham but on the train which was unaffected.
Got into work (south side of town) and other than being a bit quieter than normal there was no hint of anything wrong. Could easily just have been half term or summer holidays - bit less traffic, fewer people in the office.
Social media was still very light on details but there was a vicious undercurrent of racist tropes, stuff about "diversity is bad, we need to stay in our groups" and a desperate push for it to be some sort of immigrant / foreigner / terrorist.
We knew there'd been people killed but honestly down our end of town, it was absolutely business as normal. Really strange feeling.
But now there's going to be the fallout and I can just imagine GBN, Suella Braverman, Farage and all the other thoroughly unpleasant racist scum going to town on 'stopping the boats' and 'Rwanda' and "this is what Labour would turn the country into" ☹️

@morecashthandash I was in your ivory tower yesterday too weirdly (visiting from Sheffield). It is a super nice office.

Very uncool to spread victim-blaming rumours.

Given the facts that have since come out.
@finbar let us know when you are next down and crazylegs can buy us both a coffee!
On the wild speculation front, conversation at work regarding the time lag between the incident and official news coverage - would there have been a block on reporting for a couple of hours while initial enquiries were starting?
It was the middle of the night. Journalists weren't awake. Simple as that.

Yes, we are on a local whatsapp group, as 5 of our Staff work around Nottingham. From 7am, we were told not to bother with Nottingham centre today, as there had been killings, and from that, others said that probably druggies fighting amongst themselves.
It turns out it was a single nutter who had picked random victims.
(and what has happened to the blockquote in this forum, they just dont work now for me)
- Not long after I heard I did wonder the motive(s). I had a slight hunch that the deceased on Ilkeston Road may have been students. I'm often driving the roads in that area at that time travelling to/from work and even at 4am you'll see plenty of students taking themselves home after a night out. Passed through the approximate area en route to work at about midday, a large police presence walking the streets around Mapperley Park and Radford areas. Feels weird having something like this happen so close to home.
@crazy-legs I'd block quote your last paragraph about the fallout amongst all this amongst the usual right wing suspects but it's changed and now I don't know how to do it 🙄 all I can say is, sadly, I agree.
I work for the University of Nottingham.
It is heartbreaking that two of our students have been murdered (and equally so the other victims).
The University response has been pretty good from what I can gather - students on R4 this morning seemed as alright as can be expected. The VC is a very impressive person and can be relied on to get it right - or as right as can be expected. Definitely an air of sadness around the offices today.
Arrangements have been made for the parents, but they have got to go to their kids' rooms (probably the first bedroom they've ever had outside of their homes) at some point and get their things. In particular, that is an image that brings me close to tears. Nineteen years old, talented, lives still in front of them.
Some of the reporting has already raised my hackles. The Hate have published gratuitous details of how much per term the school fees were and what their family homes are valued at. Utterly disgraceful - and you just know they are going to go bonkers on the West African angle when more details emerge. Do these so-called journalists have a shred of decency? Don't answer that - I already know the answer.
Three families are currently dealing with grief completely out of the blue - it is horrendous. At least one other person is probably looking at life changing injuries. They must be given support and protection from people who want to use their terrible predicaments to advance any agenda.

That was my thought. Eldest has just finished his second year at uni, youngest will be off to uni in a couple of years, must be utterly devastating for the parents.
The uni, student community, and the local churches seem to have pulled together and done a great job. In the circumstances.
Reading about the parents having to go and clear out the rooms hit me harder than I would have thought.
Got a bit frustrated with local BBC reports yesterday asking if students felt safe coming back next term etc etc.
Tragic though it is, this really was a one off incident, no one needs the press to be fuelling understandable worries.
Yep my son will be returning to UON next year and my daughter will be at NTU. Both of them will be living fairly close to where the incidents happened. It does make me feel a little nervous, but it was a one off, so just trying to focus on that.
I went to UON in the early 90s, Lenton, where many of the students preferred to live, was never great and Nottingham city centre had a terrible reputation at the time. Personally I never was involved with or saw any trouble. This looks like an isolated mental health issue that could happen anywhere. One of the nice things about UON is the huge campus, place like Manchester are far more intimidating. If you want your kids to go to university you have to let go. FWIW my daughter has been living in student accomodation next to the Mancunian way in the middle of Manchester since she was 16, never had any issue (she's told us about).
