Nope, not wanting anything fancy - will be for the summer house/office. There'll be no sink, so I want minimal mess and space will be limited also.

Is it going to be the old jug on a hot plat@, with some ground coffee and a filter - percolator, or is that something different?

Are these all made equal?

Just wanting a cup of coffee better than instant. Instant being what I dunno 95% of the time

Aeropress by Aerobie makes an amazing cup of coffee.
Stick with instant, Nescafe Azera is half decent.
Unless you want espresso, then you will need a machine.

I was given a delonghi which is nice and cheap but the reservoir is plenty big enough for a day of espressos and their derivatives.

But if its just black coffee an aeropress is the least faffy for sure.

I know I'll risk being banned for life for this but how about nespresso machine? Small, neat, no mess. Amazon capsules for cheapness and decent coffee.

Amazing? really? I have one, it's no better than a cafetiere, only advantage is that it's less mess really.

I reluctantly second the Nespresso idea - it's the simplest way of getting a reasonable coffee.
You should be able to get compostable pods.

Third for the pod machine for what you're looking for. (last I looked it'll be another brand of machine for compostable/refillable /properly recyclable pods, but that was ages ago)

Not a great cup of coffee by any stretch but a good consistent cup every time and no faff.

An aeropress is absolutely not what you're looking for.

Just ordered an Aeropress, will let you know.

If it's just a simple "better than instant" you are after, I'm happy enough with a SwissGold one cup filter and a kettle.

MrsMC bought me a cheaper version for my birthday last week. No idea why. I have two SwissGold filters already and specifically said "Aeropress" when she asked what I wanted 🤷‍♂️

Aeropress is good for if you're 'on the move or have very few facilities, i use one at work but wouldn't be my first choice. I would second nespresso. When I visit French companies with work that is what they predominantly use in their offices so have got used to the flavour and they're pretty good and very convenient. Plenty of environmentally friendly ways to manage the posds now. Other than that a filter machine. Chuck the grinds on the flower beds, small bin for the used filter paper.

Make a flask

I know we've extra time on our hands at the moment but don't you think learning metal work and glass blowing is probably a bit OTT as a solution?

I prefer Aeropress to cafetiere. Aeropress coffee is about 1/3 of the way from cafetiere to espresso, so it has more body even when watered down to make Americano.

Pod machine

There’ll be no sink

I like my Aeropress.  Better filter than a cafetière and it’s so mess free, I just pop out the puck of coffee then rinse the Aeropress in the sink

Right, so it's looking like a pod machine. Everyone seems to be saying Nespresso - are these significantly better than Tassimo?

Out of interest, what are you all doing with your cafetieres that they're so messy? Enough coffee in them that they actually compress at the end of the plunge and you get a puck out of them if you're really interested in having a lump to dispose of but really you just rinse and dump through a cheap seive and empty the seive at the end of the day. No faffy paper. No balancing on top of a cup, no need to evangelise about the mediocre cup of coffee you get for your trouble.

A Finum brewing basket. It just goes the mug. Easier to wash than a cafetiere. And cheap enough, so could get a couple of them to clean later.

Tee hee.

I had a Tassimo before I went B to C. It was great.

Depends.

Output wise for a long black coffee, not much in them in my opinion (neither being very good for this, to be honest if that's your bag, a filter machine* with jug isn't a bad call)
Short espresso type coffee the Nespresso is way ahead.
Longer, milky and or flavoured "fancy" stuff, hot chocolate etc, Tassimo if only as it does it all in one so no need to have milk, froth etc.
Basic coffee pod choice availability and price, Nespresso.

*use papers regardless so you don't have to rinse, all you'll need is a bottle of water and coffee for filling, a mug for drinking and a bin.

I rarely fancy a black coffee. I'm a heathen, I know

Tassimo is your friend.

I’m a heathen, I know

No a heathen thinks drawing pictures on top of your latte makes a good coffee or shamrocks are the sign of a good pint of Guinness.

I'm glad you asked that, as it's a thread I've been meaning to start for weeks.

I, uh, inherited a Tassimo machine during an office move a couple of years ago. Over the years I've had a couple drip filter machines, an Aeropress, a stove-top moka pot, and in "the best camera is the one you have with you" style the Tassimo has probably seen more use than all the others put together. No mess, no fuss, press a button and receive coffee.

As DB says, you can get things like caramel macchiato and gingerbread latte. These use two pods though, a coffee one and a milk-based one, so they're effectively twice the price of regular coffees. They do make for a nice change though. You can buy the creamer pods separately too if you've a fridgeless office (or even if you do have a fridge of course, they don't check).

The only downside is I'm getting kinda bored of the lack of coffee options. The Tassimo pods have barcodes which tell the machine how much water to dispense, from espresso to "XL" which is a full mug. Aside from the fancy stuff which also delivers a mugful there's just two XL choices, Kenco and L'Or. You can override it to dispense more water by holding down the Go button to turn a short drink into a long one, but that slightly defeats the object.

Ended up going for a Krups Nespresso in the end, came with 12 pods - seems ok, just sat having a double espresso

For lack of hassle and mess , I think Nespresso can’t be beaten. Personally, I think they taste much better than Tassimo, but I’m sure there are others who disagree.

Aluminium is one of the easiest materials to recycle, and recycling the pods is free and very low hassle for me. We just put them in the bag and leave them down to wherever the local pickup point is. Which happens to be our corner store.

Personally, after a few trips to the US, I’ve grown to love a good old cup of Joe. So a cheap coffee drip machine is my current favourite.

I don’t understand folks saying that Aeropress is low hassle. I find it a total pita. And the while the coffee is good, it’s no better than many others imo.

A company local to me makes their own compostable Nespresso pods. Plus IMO they’re much nicer than any other pods I’ve tried.
