Off to the North York Moors next weekend for a weeks walking/sight seeing type holiday. Never been before and don't know the area, so just looking for some advice as to where the most scenic areas are for walking along with any must go to touristy type places (suitable for taking the dog).
Staying in the Helmsley area, but happy to drive further afield in the North York moors or even the east side of the Dales....if not too far!
Any advice gratefully received. 🙂
Thanks
FJ
big area the NYM, nice walking area is the western edge from sutton bank carpark.
east of osmotherly around chop gate and tripsdale is very nice too.
falling foss and little beck are awesome too. the tea room at falling foss is fantastic.
and for a nice pint, the pub at beck hole is heaven.
Thanks Ton - this sounds ideal.
Helmsley is quite twee and full of tourists and tea shops - you may or may not like this sort of thing! Pickering is a nice looking place and has a bike shop.
I only know the southern and western parts. My favourite part of the moors is around Bransdale Mill, which is on a really good xc route from Gillamoor. Not sure about walking as it's quite a long bike route, but something in that area might be good. It has a mixture of nice old broadleaved woodland, and open moorland.
Some of the abbeys are good to visit if you like old stuff - Byland, Rievalux, Ampleforth, Jervalux. Masham, over towards the Dales, has two breweries which could be a good wet weather plan if you like beer. Richmond has a castle, if you like castles.
The trees are brilliant colours at the moment, find some native woodland to mooch in.
Nice country lane downhill walk from Scaling dam to Staithes. With tea shop and pubs at the end(plus sea views.
You and dog may enjoy a walk along the front/cliffs in Scarborough. I like to walk along the beach from Sandsend to Whitby. Both walks avoid the old mud problems.
