I’ve got a couple of climbing/scrambling trips planned in the next few months.

Where is good for low rent van/car camping. I don’t really want to have to book far in advance, I don’t need an electric hookup, basic toilets will suffice, a shower would be nice.

In the £10 a night range would be nice, not the £40 a night range some sites seem to be asking for.

Any suggestions.

There's a small campsite (well, field with toilet block...) opposite Vaynol Arms in Nant Peris. I've never needed to book, and there's a good pub within walking distance.

A very long time ago we stayed here, empty in winter! Might get busy I don't know but it's a nice ce position on the stream, just might be a bit midgie and the drive up is steep. https://www.hafoddywyllcampsite.co.uk/home

+1 for the one opposite the Vaynol. But the cheap one, not the posh one with showers next door.

Edit - just checked and it has showers now. Anyway, it's the tent only one and is slightly closer to the pub.

We use to camp for free in the pass. The car got broken into and we got food poisoning from drinking the crap infested stream water. My fever peaked on Big Groove on Gogarth.

The combination of trying to follow a route description we’d memorised from reading the guide book in a shop, my partner who had lead White Wall at Milestone going a bit chocolate fire guard under pressure, the horror of the slopping ledge belay complete with rotten pegs and my temperature getting high enough for the rock to start talking to me led to a memorable day out.

So yes use one of the campsites mentioned above. Both provide clean water which is invaluable

THere are two opposite Vaynol Arms, basic and cheap, - been looking at them this week. Nearer the coast, there is a Pet Rescue Fund Raising Campsite in Dyserth which is £19 a night - we're trying this out for 3 nights in April as we know the area well having had a static about 5 miles away. Not many others that part of Wales for cheap money. Doing one in Bala, that's £35 a night in May.

For extended trips in the UK I tend to doss in lay-bys and wild camp for a few days until too fetid/muddy and then go to a schmancy £40pn site for a day or two to reset and wash and just repeat that cycle. A bit grottier but keeps the spend the same as a cheap site each night and makes for more flexibility in location as you're not always hunting for the best deal. Often pub carparks are welcome places to park up for the night if you buy a meal and ask the landlord nicely.

Camp in the pass and pay the witch 50p per person.

Is this still a thing?

Well, there’s your first lesson, never drink from streams without a filter, or boiling the water.

2nd for the one under Tryfan, there’s also a large basic one a couple of miles south of Capel, next to the training camp (Dolgam)

Dolgam campsite is great, and well priced. Stayed there a few times, the guy who runs it seems pretty sound too.

Dolgam has been operating for donkey's years - we used to stay there as kids 50 years ago. It was never dirtbag camping though in the 'dossing under a boulder sense', and it even has hot water these days...
That said, it matches the OP request for ~£10, and you get access to showers, which is likely to be a £1 coin in the slot job.

It does really depend what you have in mind. I usually ended up climbing in The Pass so the Vaynol campsite was best placed.  If you are going to be over the Ogwen Valley side then the one near Tryfan. Gogarth? Well lots over there, but I mostly I would be based in the Vaynol one as it gave the most options, and the all important wet day considerations of go south to Tremadog or wait for the slate quarries to dry.
