Going with Mrs R for 4 nights in the van soon - Sat to Weds.
Found a nice campsite near Wells for 2 nights but unsure about other 2 so far...any campsite recommendations?
Won't be biking so what are the must-do things in the area other than visiting beaches...in the rain? :-/ Poppy Line train from Sheringham to Holt worth doing?
Any good pubs/eateries etc? TIA
There's a great digital radio station
Canal cruise?
Tank Museum!...

Spendy, but nice pub...

Holkham Hall in the rain...
https://www.holkham.co.uk/
And a walk on Holkham Beach even if it's chucking it down.
A boat trip to see the seals...
https://www.beansboattrips.co.uk/
Been to Woodland's campsite, the other side of Cromer, with the kids and enjoyed it ... nice setting with a quick walk to nice sea views, 30min walk into Cromer, small club house, covered swimming pool decent little shop.
Or try Fakenham Race course .... we camped right next to the racing rail !!
Other than that....
Holkham beach is a must IMHO
Seal watching trip out of Blakeney is good.
Campsite wise we've stayed here...
https://www.manorfarmcampsite.co.uk/
and here before...
http://www.foxhillscamping.co.uk/
Foxhills is basic but nice and flat, Manor Farm has more big site facilities and it's easiliy walkable into Cromer.
Do you like owls?
I know a cracking Owl sanctuary!
Wells is lovely, worth a trip to see the tide go out and walk along the HUGE beach.
Hilltop (Sheringham) if you fancy a Go Ape (but better) type thing.
Walk from Wells to Holkham Hall, then a wander around the grounds.
Our favourite campsite- https://highsandcreekcampsitestiffkey.co.uk/
- maybe the one you have already??
We spend hours out on the huge beach here, paddling in the creeks when the tides in, walking them when it's out.
Enjoy.
I used to park the van up for a couple of days @52.9561062,0.9057673,449m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!1m7!3m6!1s0x47d775e19e3094a7:0xfdc385a26f9c0c5b!2sHolkham!3b1!8m2!3d52.9464842!4d0.8092327!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d52.9561027!4d0.9079564">here
or somewhere similar on the edge of the mudflats.
The tide goes out miles, then you can walk out to the dunes, but the tide comes in very fast, and if you cant find your way back through the channels, youll get swept out to sea. And drown.
Can be very nice out there, Ive swum across to the seals at blakeney point
Theres a pub in Stiffkey and its a great place for birdwatching
Burnham Market is worth a mooch around if you're nearby...

Same with Holt if you are passing. Probably not worth a special trip though.
You can visit Queenie too at Sandringham! 🙂
Yeah. Poppy Line train is worth doing if that's your kind of thing. We did it a couple of years ago while staying at Kelling Heath.
Holkham Hall as mentioned
Go Ape at High Lodge, Thetford (quite a drive).
I think we stayed at Woodhill Park campsite nr Cromer, which was pretty good.
There's a great campsite at Burnham Deepdale:
https://www.deepdalebackpackers.co.uk/
with a nice cafe on the row of shops at the front and The White Horse pub just down the road (as mentioned above, I think). They've got a terraced bit out the back that looks out towards the coast - gets busy though up there.
If you want somewhere to have a nice walk around (woodland) there's a place called Pretty Corner (google it), just off the main road nr Sheringham.
You can easily walk around there for a couple of hours and then sneak to the tea room for some tea & cake.
Cromer is OK for a wander around - the pier is nice and the lifeboat station at the end of the pier is definitely worth a look around. I
f you want a nice coffee, the Art House Cafe does a decent brew (well, they did when we last visited).
Sandringham is worth a wander around if that's your thing - just look out for Phil in his Range Rover!
Castle Rising is well worth a visit if you like old castle stuff.
And a quirky thing to visit is The Royal Station at Wolferton
Crab (not carb) sandwiches from the little hut at Brancaster Staithe.
Rather sadly the cafe in Cromer above the lifeboat station. Wife swears by it - has nothing to do with the men being, as she says, buff.
one thing I always love; couple of pints on the albatros, followed by F&C at French's
Don't eat at the Hoste - overrated. The Victoria at Holkham, and the Globe at Wells are good.
The in-laws like Briarfields, but it's a little twee.
The Neptune in Hunstanton, and GinTrap in Ringstead are good.
Good cafe in Wells called Bang. Lovely cider shop. Good ice cream shop. The Wells Crab House is good.
Lovely coffee from GreySeal.
the ideal thing to do is walk on holkham; good walk from holkham village, to the beach, to wells, and then back via town through the east of the estate. But you can walk for hours and just soak in the big open sky.
Norwich a fine city, with more to do than you'd think!
Walk all the way out along Blakeney point from Cley. One of my favourite beach walks ever - skies to watch whatever the weathe. Also the bird reserve at Cley if you like sitting around in huts!
If your stay tallies with any of the high tides at Snettisham, youould witness one of natures spectacular displays.
Bewilderwood - wasted on kids.....
Check out the seals at Blakeney Point
As above - Holkham Hall and beach are great, as is Bewilderwood.
We also hired a narrow boat for a couple of nights which was fun.
Got somewhere to go for a nice ride now 🙂
Sheringham for the steam train and Holkham for both the beach and the hall.
From memory, the bowler hat was invented by one of the previous lords or Holkam to stop poachers knocking out his gamekeepers.
If you do take the train from Sheringham to Holt, walk in to town for lunch at Byfords
Erics fish and chips in Thornham is superb.
Whitehill park and manor farm are really nice campsites
Holkham is just lovely, all of it, the beach is just epic and the walk out to it through the woods is superb at low tide, miles and miles of nothing but sand and sky, so beautiful.
Holkham hall is great, there are great walks around the grounds and well worth a walk up to and around the walled "Kitchen garden" if a 6 acre plot could be a kitchen garden !!
And if you are there late as it closes, you may be lucky enough to see the massive deer herd congregate on the lawn at the front of the hall.
We are lucky enough to live in Norwich and North norfolk, especially autumn and winter, is stunning.
Hunstanton Kayaks do guided SOT Kayak sandbank trips too which are good
Boardin Skool do all sorts of Paddle sports stuff on the broads too, KAyaks, Canoes, Stand up Paddle boards etc.
Thrigby hall is worth a trip, lovely zoo where you can get stupidly close to tigers.
Blickling Hall is NT, near Aylsham and worth a visit, with food in the pub after
the bowler hat was invented by one of the previous lords or Holkam to stop poachers knocking out his gamekeepers.
That's brilliant ... I so hope your right/it's true.
Edit .... Yep (kind of)
The bowler hat is said to have been designed during 1849 by the London hat-makers Thomas and William Bowler to fulfill an order placed by the company of hatters James Lock & Co. of St James's,[4] which had been commissioned by a customer to design a close-fitting, low-crowned hat to protect gamekeepers from low-hanging branches while on horseback at Holkham Hall, the estate of Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester (seventh creation) in Norfolk. The keepers had previously worn top hats, which were knocked off easily and damaged
Thanks peeps...plenty to go at there.
We used to go on holiday to Hunstanton every summer and I love it. Proper fairground, fish and chips from Vegas then a walk along the cliff bottom. Spot on!
Titchwell Manor is a few miles outside and the food has always been superb every time we have visited. There's a nature reserve across the road too.
Castle Rising as mentioned is good even if it's just to remember the old 80's children's show Knightmare.
We were there a while back, came across this place:
Fascinating bit of WW2 history. It's where they developed the training simulator for AA gunners....
Surprised no one’s mentioned King’s Lynn. An hour from Wells, and a member of the Hanseatic League of old so a good few nice buildings for such a now-insignificant place. Good harbourside with the fewest vessels I’ve ever seen at a place with a quay. (None at all - remarkable).
That's because Lynn is a s hole with a few nice old buildings
It's a surprising great area, around there. Resisted it for ages but then went one year for the weather (was crap elsewhere) and we're now regular visitors.
Anyway, probably my favourite thing to do, very childishly, is go and mess about in the sal****er creeks at stiffkey. You can walk out over the mud flats, take your shoes off, jump in the mud, swim in the creeks, watch the birdlife.
Also the area around sheringham park is great, including kelling heath also. Really decent woodland xc MTB trails around there if you explore a bit.
Also that is the area where we tend to camp - Breck farm is a superb campsite.
Coast path from Sherrigham to weybourn is good and makes a nice chilled round trip combined with the train.
A bit of a drive (40 mins) ish but hiring a boat on the broads is good fun, especially if quiet. We did a great day trip including plenty of pub stops, last year.
That’s because Lynn is a s hole with a few nice old buildings
Rather a week there than a minute in Burnham Market.
