Looking at doing 3 1/2 day tour from St Malo to Caen. There are quite a few nice looking NCN style paths to follow, but struggling to formulate an exact plan.

Does anyone have any recommendations for overnight stops, currently thinking Granville for night 1, and Bayeux for night 3, not sure about night 2.

I'm also led to believe that lunch stops maybe problematic. In the UK we tend to rely on the pub network. Looks like lots of places shut for lunch.

Any advice on routes, stops, POI's, maps etc welcome 🙂

Cheers,

Used to live on Juno Beach, lovely part of the world.

Never found lunch a problem in the area, as there's usually a bistro or something in most places that's still open. If not, stop before lunchtime and see what the boulangerie, fromagerie* and charcuterie can offer for a snack.

Oh, and do not be tempted with a snifter or three of Calvados over lunch. You'll never get back on your bike.

The beach road is well worth a look, as you could take in pretty much all the scenic/historic spots en route. Once in Caen, the Rue de Bras has some lovely cafes and bars, a great place for people watching. Oh, and don't forget to see the Baleine at Luc Sur Mer. They're awfully proud of it. 😉

*Pont-l'Évêque for preference.

I second the warning about calvados. One drunk a little too quickly at 11am when you got up on the ferry before 6 = sitting in a cafe with a coffee until you feel safe to ride...

I don't know that western area, but if you have time to kill in the last day beuvron en auge if very pretty. I like courselles sur mer too

Thanks for all the info guys.

CaptainFlasheart, I'm thinking of going from Grandcamp-Maisy to Ouistreham down the D514, with an overnight detour to Bayeux.

Would the D514 be suitable for 8 not too fast tourers? Most of it looks OK on street view, but wondering how bad the traffic gets.

Cheers.

Here:

Cracking route, mostly quiet lanes. I found climbs best undertaken after a 3 course lunch and a couple of cidres, with a calvados digestif.

Was thinking of a long weekend myself this summer from Cherbourg-Ouisterham and doing some wild camping on the way.

We did exactly that a couple of years ago :- http://imnotthealien.com/cycling/?page_id=2137

A decent ride, really liked the route along the river from Tessy-sur-Vire to St Lo, we did it on road bikes and tyres without punctures but mtb / cyclocross tyres would be better

& reading on further, we stopped this year in Carentan and went past Grandcamp Maisy Pont du Hoc, Arromanches - there were 8 of us and only one honk from a car. Its a bit narrow in places but the French seem more tolerant
