I'm quite partial to a stir fry with a packet of instant noodles (Aldi own brand), but a few months ago Mrs Natrix and I noticed that the noodles were 'different' - a bit stodgier and less 'al dente'. Thinking that it might be a dodgy batch, I bought some of a different flavour with a different sell-by-date but they were the same.

Off to Tesco for some Batchelors instant noodles, but they had the same 'stodgy' feel to them.

What is going on in the world of instant noodles? Has anybody else noticed this change? I've tried googling but have got nowhere.

Does anybody know of a brand that hasn't gone 'stodgy'??

Possible that aldi and tesco use the same supplier. I always get mine from the Turkish shop at the end of my road, 3 for a £1, taste amazing! Might have one now in fact 🙂

Are you suggesting a secret instant noodle/pasta collaboration?

Decathlon seem fairly stiff to me.

I've been working my way through a pack of M&S own brand noodles for the last couple of weeks. Very nice.

we tend to use Hime, Obento and Hakubake ones depending on what's in the shop

Go to your local Oriental Supermarket, pick up some of these:

Have your brain set on fire.

You need a proper asian supermarket, the pot noodles i had in japan and Korea were gourmet compared to Golden Wonder.

I don't know of a nearby asian supermarket, so I'll give M&S a go 😀

Roughly where are you? Good Asian supermarkets are places of wonder.

'Tiger' noodles used to be really good, but they seem to have disappeared 🙁

There's about 20 feet of shelving in our local Sainsbury's dedicated to noodles / pot noodle things. I've sampled the lot, and they are *all* absolutely minging by comparison - stodgy, flavourless strips of soggy cardboard -'gourmet' brands included. (Super Noodles are bloody awful!)

Aldi's own were OK, but I still haven't found anything to compare with the 'Tiger' ones.

Go for the ones with no decipherable English on the carton - adds an air of mystery...

Cant' recall the brand but the Asian supermarket in Glasgow has some which have about 6 different sachets of random stuff in them, one of which tastes like it's made of actual fire.

definitely the multi sachet flavour ones with no engrish on them, I suspect they are kept separate as I imagine if combined dry would be an explosion risk.

Camberley, Farnborough area.

I know of a Nepalese supermarket but I don't think that the Nepalese eat noodles............

Go to Bracknell/Swinley much? There's a shop just down the road from the station.

I've had that one.

Makes your eyes & mouth water as you open it? top stuff!

Some of the posh ones come with a sachet of dessicated fried onions for sprinkling on top, they're about 60p each though - top end of the market

Sounds like a good excuse to re-visit Swinley 😀

If you see the one I posted above, get it then.

It made my eyelids vibrate it was so spicy.

They're made by samyang and have not a word of English on them other than that. The nuclear hot ones are either the 'fire breathing chicken' or the 'chilli cuddling octopus' tubs.

I had noodles for lunch from here and as usual they were really very good. Far superior to any instant rubbish.
