'bout time they updated this isn't it? I'd imagine this place is pretty out of date as far as web standards go now. Hoping for a bright shiny new STW soon...

What editing functions would you be wanting, exactly? There are issues, mostly with posting photos and videos, but those do seem to be linked to the last iOS update. There are workarounds, but it's a pain in the ass.
If you mean making STW look like all the other fora out there, then thanks, but no thanks, the forum works just fine.

What tools would those be? What do you mean by not working? What version of iOS as I've no problem?

Not sure if it's the same issue, but occasionally the formatting controls above the text box do not load up for me. I've known it take a couple of page refreshs before they appear. iOS 8.3 and 8.4; wifi, 3G and 4G.

iPad? Safari? iOS 8?

There's your problem. It's the last few updates of iOS 8 that don't play nicely with STW.

* Smuggly sitting here with iOS 6 & 7 with no problems.

A lot of the buttons (img video) crash my iOS devices but I think that's Apple's problem rather than stw

You can type words into it? What's the problem? Bring back newsgroups I say.

Using URL, IMG buttons in post reply wysiwyg closes safari for me. Have got latest iOS downloaded. Crucify me for staying updated, I guess I should expect irrational virtual human behaviour.

I only use iOS as I don't own a laptop or a PC, just an iPhone.

Never had any problems on the rare occasions I actually use the buttons above the text box.

Normally though I just type the [tag] [/tag] that's required. Pretty easy really.

Cheers Jim I'll flag this post with the tech bods, it was doing that a lot but appeared to be fixed. Seems there may still be a problem.

i have the same issue that Safari crashes when you use the buttons but then I blamed Apple rather than the website that works on every other platform.

How odd. I'm not HTML expert, but I would have thought a button that inserts a few chars of text into the box below is a pretty simple bit of programming....my money is on Apple being at fault.

Also - OT - I just want to say "Thanks" to the code-monkeys for fixing the location of the RSS button.

I don't think anyone noticed I bumped the thread about it with a bunch of flowers 😀

IMG and Video crash Safari for me - iPad 3 running iOS 8.4.

On reopening Safari the formatting / insert buttons don't always appear - it takes a refresh to get them back.

Far more annoying, however, is that bloody Tudor watch pop up. Whilst I appreciate the need for advertising, I can't think of any other website with such an obtrusive advert. Sorry, guys, but it's a bit over the top.

@ JulianA, I would have thought your top irritation would be the décor in the Embassy, not a watch advert.

still not as bad as the Casino Royal LOOK AT THE WATCH moment...

so is the conclusion the IOS bit is broken not the website?

I think it is the pop-up handling rather than text insertion, as the buttons that don't have a pop-up seem to work fine.

Either way it IS definitely Apple's fault. Nothing a website does should cause the browser to crash, no matter how good or bad the JavaScript is.

Apologies if my original post suggested STW was at fault, if it is Apple to blame. Still, would be nice to have a shiny new website soon... 😀

Well seeing as we're on the subject.

Inserting anything, be that a pic or scrpit change always, without exception pops back to the start of the reply. On any browser I've ever used. Especially frustrating on a touch screen where you then need to faff about either editing it back into submission or popping through multiple keyboard layers to do it manually. Very bad coding.

Clicking on a topic takes you to the very first post rather than the last seen. No option to change this. Lazy/ancient coding.

Going to the reply box automatically takes you to the last page rather than the page you were on. Want to multi quote? Tough luck, open another window. Lazy/ancient coding.

No direct reply or multi-quote function. Lazy/ancient coding.

I respect the fact that the vocal majority don't want this "the same as every other forum" in terms of aesthetics but I find it very difficult to believe that people are equally as in favour of maintaining something that was probably built alongside Netscape Navigator and has never been improved upon. Moreso when there are folk that actually pay extra to use this abomination.

I don't get that issue of popping back to the start when inserting a quote / image etc. Ever.

Never seen that happen (I tend to use Safari or Firefox).

Clicking on a topic takes you to the very first post rather than the last seen.

Click on the "Freshness" column to go to the most recent post.
Go to your "Forum Activity" page if you want to jump to the last post you made on a thread.

Not quite as good as "Last Seen" but pretty usable.

No direct reply or multi-quote function. Lazy/ancient coding.

Direct reply? You mean multiple-threaded posts? Yuk!

Direct reply being the ability to click on a 'reply' button on the bottom of a post and have it sitting quoted in your reply box. Not multiple threads, they suck hard!

I use Firefox as well. Plus IOS, IE8 and multiple others. Happens all the time regardless.

Not [s]quite[/s] remotely as good as "Last Seen" but pretty usable if you fancy a faff.

FTFY

But in a nutshell: my point exactly. Basic stuff that should be available but STW are too tight to pay to upgrade to provided the money keeps rolling in.

As I've said before I will happily pay to support a site but when you don't see anything back for your money I think 'what's the point?'

And while we're on the subject could the links in posts please open in a new window?

Should be really simple to do... And it's good practice not to navigate away from the original site when opening a link.

Clicking on a topic takes you to the very first post rather than the last seen.

Click the 'freshness' column, it'll do exactly that.

No... multi-quote function

Good.

I can't do quotes or make italics or owt!

You can manually type the code, eg quote and /quote in square brackets.

And while we're on the subject could the links in posts please open in a new window?

Ctrl-click (or middle mouse button) will do that. If 'new window' was hard-coded, there would be no way of a user overriding that default behaviour.

I don't have a mouse for my iPad... I know I can tap and hold to get the option to open a link in a new tab but it's annoying.

Why would a user want to override this?

Direct reply being the ability to click on a 'reply' button on the bottom of a post and have it sitting quoted in your reply box.

That sucks - it encourages people to quote the entire post instead of just the little bit the want to reply to. (See road.cc for examples!)

I use Firefox as well. Plus IOS, IE8 and multiple others. Happens all the time regardless.

Using Firefox right now. Just pressed every button and none of them made the cursor go back to the start of the reply (is that what you mean?)

I can't do quotes or make italics or owt!

Are you blocking Javascript? If so then you'll have to enter them manually. [i]itealics[/i] etc.

Personally, I reckon content is more important than presentation. That's what I subscribe for.

Ditto.

Click the 'freshness' column, it'll do exactly that.

Not quite - it takes you to the most recent post on a thread. He means he wants a button that takes you to the post after the last post you read.
(we used to have this in the old old forum - but it worked off cookies, was horribly buggy and made it all very slow).

And while we're on the subject could the links in posts please open in a new window?

Nope! It's bad practice - much better to let users have the choice than force the decision on them.

Why would a user want to override this?

I do all the time - because whn I'm on an iPad / iPhone I have one tab with the main forum and then open each thread I want to read in its own tab. So if I'm following a link in that thread then I want to continue in that same tab, not open a new one.

Then why do most of the adverts on STW open in a new tab?

I dunno - I don't see the adverts - but I guess the argument is that adverts aren't content, whereas an external link as part of a thread is.

External - exactly. A link to another thread should open in the same tab / window, but external links - BBC, YouTube etc - take the user away from the original site.

Wouldn't have it any other way, not that I look at ads very often, but if I do, I much prefer them to open another separate tab/window, then I can keep it open if I want to look at it later and return to the thread.
Works just fine.

Cougar - why is multi-quoting bad? At the very least people would know who the hell is saying what. We don't even have a decent quote function that acknowledges the OP.

Seems tags are working properly now. Who knows.

I really don't understand this, can anyone actually explain why living in the dark ages spending half your time working around all the "missing" features is "better" than just upgrading the software and not have your site look like the kinda throwback a neighbourhood watch group might use? The fact that simple quoting 'features' are even being discussed says a lot.

Let me put this into context, it's like buying a car with hand operated windscreen wipers. Sure they do the job but take a load more effort for the sake of what? Being different?
