It is binary scientifically.

No, it's not, we've shown that sexual characteristics are a spectrum. What more do you want?

At no point have I used the word abnormal. The term I used was anomaly.

Talking of spectrums... There's little difference when you're feeling marginalised and invalidated and are pretty miserable. You really appear to be poor at understanding humans.

In your made up world yes. What exactly are you referring to when you say sexual characteristics? Do you mean biological sex, gender identity, brain chemistry, anatomy? Or some made up mixture of all of them in some attempt to muddy the waters?

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/sex-redefined-the-idea-of-2-sexes-is-overly-simplistic1/

I found this interesting trailwagger, it's a bit long but might be worth a read. It seems to challenge the traditional thinking behind biological sex determination.

I found out recently that I'm not male but now cis male.

I've also noticed on the bottom of some peoples emails it says his/his/him for example. Will we soon be called a sexist or bigot for referring to someone as him without clarifying it first?

Maybe we should just get rid of all sex related language and just call everyone 'it'

What kind of a dick response is that?

No, all the old traditional methods will still work.

@molgrips I think I see where you are coming from with your eye colour analogy but I don't think it works with sex. If we divided the population up by eye colour (assuming some sort of gradation) we'd have multiple pools of lots of people. Some would be larger than others but all would be sizeable. If we did the same for sex then we'd have two massive pools and the remainder would be unnoticeable. It's just not the same sort of "spectrum" at all.

If we thought if it as a rainbow of colour, it would really just be a red stripe and a violet stripe.

Thank you @exsee , finally someone with some relevant information to back up their argument.

Two interesting thing about that article.

One is the continual use of language such as "normal" "disorder" and "mutation" throughout the piece.

The other is the admission from the author that there are only two sexes.

@molgrips ,rather than calling me a dick why don't you show me some scientific paper or medical research that states there are many different biological sexes as you claim.

We are just people in an ideal world but we use all sorts of clumsy medical, geographical, political and scientific labels and many of those develop positive/negative

It's easier to change language than to remove prejudice.

Why didn't you do your own googling. I have done several times and I read that article some time ago.

why don’t you show me some scientific paper or medical research that states there are many different biological sexes as you claim.

I think you need reading comprehension lessons as well as science becaue I've repeatedly said that I'm NOT claiming there are multiple sexes.

But this is utterly pointless, stupid and damaging now. You're being an arse, refusing to even try to understand what's being explained and why it's being explained because apparently points scored are more important than the feelings of people affected by a serious issue.

Someone DM me if this thread improves again, ta.

One is the continual use of language such as “normal” “disorder” and “mutation” throughout the piece.

Let's look at how those words were used and why they chose to use those words:

A 46-year-old pregnant woman had visited his clinic at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia to hear the results of an amniocentesis test to screen her baby's chromosomes for abnormalities.

They were looking for abnormalities in the baby's chromosomes.

In 2011, researchers showed that if another key ovarian gene, RSPO1, is not working normally, it causes XX people to develop an ovotestis

If a person's ovarian gene is not working normally.

Gene mutations affecting gonad development can result in a person with XY chromosomes developing typically female characteristics

The person's gonad development can be affected by a gene mutation.

In every case where these words were used it was made clear that this was a single factor affecting a particular aspect of a person.

This is using scientific language the way it was meant to be used. It precisely describe a specific part of a person. It was not used to describe the person.

Transphobes like to use scientific sounding language. It allows them to sound dispassionate while doing what they really want to which is dehumanise a section of society. Bigots of every strip use dehumanising language to describe the target of their ire. Sometimes it's obvious (tranny, was man, etc) sometimes they camouflage it with scientific sounding terms (anomoly, abnormal, etc). The key thing to look for is are they describing a person, or group of people, or a single identified aspect of a person.

Another point, the binary sex thing is also an attempt to manipulate scientific sounding terms to dehumanise.

They treat Male and Female as if it were the same thing as Cat and Dog. With cats and dogs there is a single defining characteristic to definitively say one is a cat and one is a dog which is the genus. This single defining characteristic means cat or dog is a binary thing.

What is the single defining characteristic of Male and Female?

I can tell you now there isn't one. There are various Male and Female characteristics and when enough of these characteristics are met we put the person in the male or female category. In some cases a person has an unusually mixed bag of characteristics compared to the general population and classifying these people becomes less obvious. In these cases the medical community has stepped in to say that, when a particular person has this combination of characteristics, they are male and with this combination they are female. It's people making classifications. It is not indisputable.

So while it is correct to say that there are male and female characteristics it is not correct to say there is only the Male sex and the Female sex. In order to say that you have to have a single defining characteristic.

Wow if you find the recent few posts grossly offensive then good luck with the rest of life!

Different people find different things offensive. For example, if you said to me, '**** you, you ****ing ****!' I wouldn't get offended. Why? Because what you are really saying is, 'I'm really angry at you and I'm going to hit you now.' There is nothing for me to get offended about.

Some people, on the other hand, would find it very offensive.

I get offended when people attempt to dehumanise sections of society. To me, dehumanising people is the absolute worst thing you can do because we all know what humans can do to other humans when they don't see them as fully human.

So thank you for wising me luck with the rest of life.

Oh and I didn’t get the job.

Sorry to hear that. Next…!

EDIT: I shouldn’t skim read, I missed this…

Yesterday my partner was diagnosed with skin cancer and today my Mum had a stroke and I’m 500 miles away.

Really sorry to hear about this. I hope action can be taken to help your partner ASAP. Is your mum alone where she is? Is there anything anyone on here can do to help?
