We are heading down on Sat in our little camper for the week next week. We have a 6 yr old boy and a dog. We'll be starting in Whitstable as that's where the father in law lives.

Suggestions please.

Go to Rye, eat seafood and take a walk down the most picturesque street in the UK. Canterbury cathedral is amazing, if it's good weather it's a lovely spot to chill outside the cathedral.

If going to Rye, go a bit further to Dungeness [s]power station[/s], and take in the slight weirdness of it all whilest riding on the miniture train to Hythe and back.

Whitstable resident here!

In the town itself:

Whitstable Castle & playpark
Lots of nice shops & restaurants - Elliot's/the cheese box/jo jos/Krishna/wheelers to name a few
Whitstable & Tankerton beaches & Tankerton slopes in particular for dog walkage

Further afield:

Dover Castle
Wildwood
Ye holy theme parke of Canterbury
Faversham is good for a mooch around
Joss Bay near Margate

I second Wildwood, always loved going there. Also Sandwich bay and Hacklinge Marshes is pretty cool to check, migration birds and what not there. All the other suggestions are pretty solid!

Whistable is nice itself. Have a wander along the beach.

Dover Castle is good if you like castles and there's a good playground on the sea front at Herne Bay.

Was gonna say...
A ride on romney hythe and dymchurch railway
Go poking* the sea anemones in the rock pools in Joss Bay or Botany Bay (or one of them near Broadstairs -forget which it was we used to go to when I was 6)
*not with fingers 😉
Zoo - either Port Lympne or the other one set up by the same guy.

Practice a bit of casual racism?

Rye is actually in Sussex, but that shouldn't stop you visiting it as it is a lovely little town.

Margate / Folkestone for the seaside town trying to regenerate themselves, Lower Leas Coastal Park is great for young kids as is the Warren in Folkestone. Old High Street for arty shops and coffee may not be that good for a 6 year old but still interesting, and links well with the harbour and harbour arm. Although only open for food etc at certain times and be aware there are only chains on the edges.
Margate has the Turner Gallery, again probably not great for a 6 year old, but it has amusements and arcades.
Plenty of nice walking in Kent from coastal, marshland and forest walks.
as others have said Port Lympne or Howletts will be a good day out. Tenterden steam train, Bodiam Castle (again Sussex, but on the steam train line).
Ashford Outlet shopping if retail is your thing, or Bluewater.
Again Sussex based but you could link it in with Rye is Hastings with a pier and the old town being great places to explore. They also have a good crazy golf course.
Deal and Sandwich are nice too, and Sevenokas, Tunbridge Wells have plenty worth exploring.

Oh and the Rare Breeds Centre at Hamstreet is good for children too, close-ish to Rye and Tenterden.

I would probably look to base yourself in an area for a day or two - Rye, Hastings, Tenterden and Ashford. Folkestone, Dover, Deal, Canterbury and Margate would be another.

Sandwich! Lovely little town with lots of quirky streets and houses. Boat trip out to see the seals.
Campsite in town or head out past the golf course and wild camp on the shore.

The Hornby/Airfix/Scalextric visitors centre in Margate is worth a look if you like Hornby/Airfix/Scalextric.

+1 for Lower Leas Coastal Park

Deal and Walmer castles are pretty good too.

+2 for lower leas at Folkestone coupled with a play on the beach for a couple of hours.
There are a few trampoline parks popping up in Kent, including one in Maidstone, if your 6 year old likes jumping.
Groombridge Place is nice, with bird of prey demonstrations, a boat trip and often during the holiday, themed days for children. Not cheap to get in though.
Knole Park in Sevenoaks is a lovely place to wander round, and you can look round the house, if that's your thing.
If you're bringing bikes, might be worth looking at the Cyclopark up by Gravesend. There are some easy trails to ride around up there, with a play area and a decent cafe.
Bedgebury is a great family day, plus you have blue and "red" trails to ride if desired. Bike hire is available.

BTW casual racism is not mandatory

EDIT: just saw the non bike related thread heading

Tankerton arms or the black dog for micropubbing.

I'd bring a bike personally there's some halfway decent riding close by...

Dumpton Gap is a lovely little beach - also not very well known so quieter than some.

Bottany bay also lovely - the pub/hotel does pretty decent food.
Joss bay again, really nice.

Sandwich/Broadstairs are great - Margate/Ramsgate/Folkstone not so much.

If you can bring a bike, the Viking trail is a great 30 mile loop which takes in some fab places/views.

Minnis Bay is another good spot- vast flat sand area when the tide's out.

Bedgebury has walks and play areas if you're not riding. Beware though, as the weather has improved in the last 2 weeks it has occasionally closed due to reaching capacity, despite the parking fee!. Bedgebury and Leeds Castle both have Go Ape. The former has a junior one, not sure about Leeds.
