Ok following on from an earlier post when I killed my 6700 by updating it as orange had suggested through the nokia phone itself I phoned orange.
I eventually found loads on the nokia forums about the update killing phones and was not hopeful of anything other than google to tesco and buying a cheap brick stand in.
Long story short orange are sending me a new phone tonight! Apologised that it would be later today! And they're happily taking up the issue with nokia! I think it helped that they'd had loads of calls about it already and were expecting loads more!
What's happened to nokia they used to be the dogs dangly bits, now they're just a bit pants. But with everyone else being so good it's going to be hard for them to catch up I think.
Oh well, next time I won't update the software! Lesson learned.

Do update it - this doesn't happen normally!

Nokia are under new management, so they'll get better again. They are very good at making actual handsets, now they've got Windows 7 on them they'll be ace.

I know what you mean. after my n95 i said i'd never have another, and yet here i am with a broken n86. guess i'm not a quick learner. they've been poor for a while. shame but the good companies survive perhaps nokia needs to just move into mobile history.
