Evening all, the extractor fan in our bathroom lets the wind through, we never use the fan anyway so can I just nip into the loft with a bit of plastic and block the exterior vent from the inside? It’s fairly high up and I don’t have a ladder tall enough to reach it so thought if I remove the duct and block it up it should be ok?
What’s the deal with building regs etc? Will anybody really care or even check if we ever decided to move?
On a night like tonight when the wind is blowing you can feel the draft coming through the vent and into the bedroom.
I USED TO LIKE MASSEY FERGUSONS TOO! I DON'T ANY MORE.
(I get my coat....)
Yes. Don't be surprised if you start getting a bit of mould though, unless you've got some other ventilation in place.
The best extractor fan I ever had was an Expelair which had a solenoid (do they still exist) which opened and closed the louvre vent. Mine goes tippety tap all the time whenever it's over a force 3. But as I'm a windsurfer it wakes me up to go sailing.
Our kitchen fan has a cowl with a neoprene lined flap, keeps draughts out and isn't too noisy when the wind gets up. Pretty sure you can get inline dampers, that's what I'd be looking at.
Thanks for the info chaps, there is a window in the room aswell so plenty ventilation. I’ll go with the blocking it up route I think. Never gets used anyway.
Ours did that - 3 floors up in our en suite so kept us awake all night. I bought a different cover for it that the vents point down so it prevents the wind going into the hole. No issues since.

£11.50 and keeps some ventilation
This kind of thing - split the ducting and stick it in. Job done all inside the loft, no need for big ladders outside.
Same problem, wall mounted and inaccessible, bought a one way woo wah that fitted into the hole through the wall, problem solved.
I had the same problem. I changed the fan itself firstly to one with a backdraft flap built in, which did improve things a bit, but it took borrowing some ladders and changing the outside vent to one with a cowl and a second flap to solve it.
It still vents properly in all but the highest winds, very little flappage in high winds and a big difference in temp in the bathroom and no mould.
The previous owners solution was expanding foam in the vent, the dumbarses. Took me ages to get it all out
I'm curious why you don't use it more than anything ? bathrooms get pretty damp without one; and you're not likely to leave the window open in winter long enough to get all the moist air out without also making it freezing cold ?
I went up in the loft tonight for a nosey, it actually had a backdraft thing fitted but it’s obviously nae use to man nor beast. I just put a temporary fix in place for now, I got a new exterior vent with a hood so I’ll fit that when I get a big enough ladder.
As for why I don’t use it, well I’m up before 5am during the week for work so don’t want to wake up my wife. Other than that I’m not sure to be honest. Just prefer to open the window for a while.
