Mrs Coolhandlukes car (9-3 Aero convertible if it makes a difference) had a sort of whiring noise from the rear passenger side. I thought might be a bearing was on its way out but had it checked and it was fine..

Then we got new tyres and the rears came onto the front, now the noise is from the front, driver side.

Surely it must be the tyre? if not what else?

Goodyear Efficient grip, worn evenly.

Its made the noise since we got the car, last September.

Something in the tyre? Check it all the way around.

If you rule out the above then yes it can b just a noisy tread design.

Have you found it worse on the front? Wheel angles are different front to back so tyres can wear in a way that means any noisy features sound even worse when switched to the other axle.

I have some Khumo Ecsta sports on the rear of my estate which have worn a bit oddly as some bits seem to be more fleixble so have worn less. When I put them on the front they make a noise similar to as you describe but back on the rear I hardly notice them.

"Feathered" tyre, I had the same issue on my Golf when moving tyre from rear to front. Garage said they'd eventually wear down and be okay but they didn't so I ended up getting them replaced. Apparently it's quite common with wider tyres, especially on VAGs.

tyres these days have a noise rating this is why we bought yokohama tyres for our megane. it meant that our tyres give a +67db noise level... which means you can chat quietly in the cabin of our car now. the budgets that were on before were noisy basterds!

Apparently certain tyres don't work well on certain cars.
Kumho Ecsta KU31s on the rear of my Ibiza eventually wear unevenly and less to a rumbling bearing failing type noise.
If you run your hand around the tyre (probably inside edge) you might be able to feel it.

Sounds like another £220 will solve it 😥

Then again, it's her car not mine, I can't hear it when I'm driving my car..... 😀

Perfectly timed thread; my A3 is having similar issues.

Took it to the garage who checked the bearings and said they were fine, and that it is most likely the tyre is 'feathered' as orangewinger mentioned above. It's not noisy enough for me to actually do anything about it though, will just crank up the music and wait until it needs to be replaced. 😀
