Thinking of getting a set as I have a long haul return flight coming up. Needs to be buds rather than over ear phones as they will be in a pannier between out and return.

Do any of the cheaper ones do the noise cancelling well for aircraft noise? Max £100 though ideally less

Amazon had the anker soundcore liberty 3 pro for a fair bit less than £100 recently (not sure what the price is now).
But they have good noise cancelling (not tested on a plane though -noisy office for me).
I will be using mine on a flight shortly

Remember that on a plane, if you want to watch a film etc you have to plug a cable in. So headphones are easier there.

You can, if you prefer, buy an extra little Bluetooth jobby that you plug in, which then broadcasts to your earbuds. Haven't tried one of these but it sounds like a bit of a faff...

Also, keep an eye on HotUKDeals for offers.

I was in your position earlier this year. Ended up getting some Bang & Olufsen earbuds for £120, reduced from about £275. They're pink, but I can live with that!

Felt like a right plonker when I realised about the film watching thing tho. It had been so long since I had been long haul that I'd completely forgotten how things worked ...

I have the anker liberty 3 pro - for the 90 quid I paid for them they are excellent, especially as the sound quality is reasonably good. It’s worth fiddling around with the app as you can sort out a custom profile for both the anc and the sound.

I have the Sony Linkbuds S which are very good and should be available around the £100 mark.

I've got the google pixel pro buds. Recently used them on a flight and the noise cancelling did a great job.

Google were gifting them with some phones so there are loads for good prices new on eBay.

I paid £90 for mine. Brand new, sealed pack etc. They retail at £199.

Thanks all. Probably go for either the Liberty 3 Pro £75 on Amazon or these get decent reviews -EarFun-Air-Pro 3 at around £50.

Going to be downloading podcasts so the movie thing isn't an issue.

Think I've got the Jabra Elite 75 ear buds. Sound quality is very good and they work well, but they don't stay in my ear so I'm going to try some foam buds.

Jabra are excellent and often in a sale.

More planes have Bluetooth built into the seatback now, but it's a long way from a sure thing

I’d recommend IEMs (in-ear monitors) which are basically normal earbuds but designed for musicians on stage. They’re passive rather than active noise cancelling, but passive cancellation is very effective.

They also sound better. Partly because your money all goes on the drivers rather than being split between drivers and DSP, but also because the polarity-inverted ‘anti-sound’ emitted by the earbuds inevitably causes some distortion to the sounds you want to hear.

I have a pair of Shure SE535 which I love but they’re pricey. Anything from the Shure or Sennheiser IEM ranges would be great.

I forgot to add that the key is the foam earbud tips that come with IEMs. They’re designed to block external sound, unlike the silicone tips they also come with (designed to let you hear what’s going on).

Shure SE215 and Sennheiser IE 40 and IE 100 are in your budget.

Before the pandemic I had BA gold flying for a company that doesn’t pay for business class. IEMs win IMO because they block the plane’s drone and also high frequency incidental noises like babies crying.

This is pretty good on active vs passive:

@benos

Thanks. Interesting read. I may go the noise isolating wired earbud route then. If I get an adaptor I could use them for the films as well as podcasts.
