Announced today.

If a certain person doesn’t get it is he going to go off like the spoiled kid at his own birthday party who doesn’t win Pass the Parcel?

Almost hoping Musk gets it. That would push agent orange right off the edge.

I don't normally pay that much attention but since the wrong result could lead to my current country getting invaded by the US I'm following this one a bit more closely.

Going to be interesting. You'd hope he doesn't get it but Kissinger did, so there's historic form. I'm not sure who should get it, to be fair, except everyone who has resisted the urge to slap the orange bellend into the middle of next week

Tbh it doesn't bother me if he gets it, in fact I think it would be quite funny.

Unfortunately I don't think it involves going up onto a stage to accept it? That would be hilarious! I can imagine his little smiling face beaming so proudly! 😂

They should make sure there's a few steps up to the stage, but not enough to warrant a hand rail.

Interesting one. If it transpires that he has managed to stop the Gaza war you could argue that he actually deserves it …..notwithstanding he effectively green lighted the whole Israeli genocide & could have stopped it long ago had he wanted to.

Surely he hasn't actually done anything yet? The war in gaza isn't actually over yet, the hostages are not home yet. Russia are still invading Ukraine.

Surely next year is on the cards if he manages to get those things sorted.

If he gets the prize today, he'll back off and Israel will wipe Gaza off the map. Can they take it off him if the war doesn't actually end?

To be fair, I never really understood why Obama won it before he had done anything notable either.

You didn't hear about him solving the war between Albania and Azerbaijan?

They should keep dangling the carrot for another 12 months to ensure he doesn't invade Canada or Iceland.  This years prize is for things done in 2024 iirc so they have cover.

To be fair Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for not doing much more than winning a presidential election.

I'm not surprised Donald Trump thinks he deserves it,  the qualifications aren't particularly stringent!

Given the almost perpetual state of warfare throughout history it must be rather tricky to award a peace prize. It’s not like you have discovered sodium which is an actual thing which remains discovered.

I can't help but think that what is going on in Gaza right now (Israeli troops withdrawing), right at the same moment the announcement is taking place, is all pre-orchestrated theatrics for Trump's announcement.

Edit: Thank gawd for that!

So I guess he's going to nuke Venezuela now.

Surely since Sir Tony of Blair is going to sort it all out, on top of all his previous efforts to bring peace to the Middle East, he’s got to be in the running?

Hurrah! gone to a Venezuelan politician. Given the US preponderance for extra-judicial killing of Venezuelans, kinda ironic.

Did that the guy who threatened to invade Greenland, and has deployed troops in his own country, didn’t win

Indeed, the headlines write themselves

"Old Man, 78 disappointed after threatening to invade both Canada and Greenland fails to win Peace Prize"

He won't know where Venezuela is or how to pronounce it.

He thought "habeas corpus" (the enshrined principles of right to life) was a person. Some journo asked if he was going to suspend habeas corpus and he said "who's that, I don't know who that is"

🙄

Well it's a tricky one if you didn't learn Latin.

It just proves that he's a man of the people and not a posh git

Hmmm, I think he (or his advisors anyway) know quite a lot about Venezuela. Don't forget there are a lot of Venezuelan immigrants in the US.

This is actually quite a clever play from the Nobel committee

I'm sure his advisors know about it. Less sure that he does.

Reminds me of the joke about the Brazilians...

J.D. Vance is giving the Trump his daily briefing. He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."
"OH NO!" Trump exclaims. "That's terrible!"
His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.
Finally, Trump looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"

Apparently nominations for this year closed in January .. pretty sure that was before he had ended the Boer war, Spanish civil war, and any of the Star Wars ones either.

Come 2026 i`m sure he will have stopped hundreds of historic wars, and as many wars in places not even on any maps yet.

I think he primarily won it for not being George W Bush.

I think she is a MAGA is nut job, just the Venezuelan branch of the global Trump fanclub.

Maybe consider her being awarded it as a consolation prize for Trump?

Well, I went to a Secondary Modern School, my parents were working class, I never went to college or university, and I know what the phük "habeas corpus" means, despite not being a, as you put it, “posh git”.

I can also read words of more than two syllables, and count higher than twenty without using my fingers and toes.

your Latin needs some work - it’s not a right to life, the translation is more like the right to the body, but it refers to a right to liberty, essentially a route to challenge unlawful detention.

I thought the intention of habeas corpus was to mean "bring out" or "show" the body?

Which considering it doesn't specify whether to body needs be alive or dead doesn't really sound like the best way to express the right to life or even liberty.

I blame the Romans.

Btw I see that Donald Trump's best buddy and his Secretary of State Marco Rubio nominated Machado for the Nobel Peace Prize, he's going to have a little bit of explaining to do.

Ahh… that explains a lot. They choose someone they thought the Trump administration would approve of. Not quite how Trump works though, is it. Good luck to Norway. [ yes, yes, I know, that’s a joke ]

Reckon there are plenty of redneck Trump fans who can count over 20 just using their own fingers and toes.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog_entry/nobel-peace-prize-winner-machado-told-netanyahu-she-appreciates-israels-achievements-in-war-pms-office-says/

Newly crowned Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that she greatly appreciates his decisions and decisive actions in the war, and Israel’s achievements, according to a statement from the premier’s office.

Well which Peace Prize recipient wouldn't appreciate Israel's genocidal onslaught and war crimes on the people of Gaza which has caused so much disgust and revulsion throughout the world?

It will be a travesty if Donald Trump is not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize next year.
