Aw that's sad, he was great. Was on TV fairly recently, seemed like a lovely guy.
Always remember the first thing I heard by him via an NME cassette: "This policeman is kicking me to death.." but done with humour.
RIP 🙁

This is very sad news. I admired and respected him greatly. A truly brilliant man of words and he always seemed to be above all, kind. There are too few people who seem to be able to manage this.

That is a damned shame. I liked his work, sorry to think there’ll be no more.

Had the privilege of working (very briefly) with him during an anti-racism campaign in Tower Hamlets, around 1994. Such a lovely man. Very genuine, warm and humble. Also witnessed him speak at various cultural/political events throughout the years. So intelligent, so informed. And a rare human being; one with true ethics and principles. A great, great loss to our society and culture. RIP.

The condolences on BBC are a group of notable folk I'd be proud of recognition from.

Saw him perform live and also speak as part of panel Q&As for a few events that I attended. I always benefitted from hearing him, one of those great speakers who broadened perspectives and opened my eyes to thinking about things in a different way. RIP.

I saw the Tam Lyn retelling live in 2005 and I can still remember it like it was yesterday, it was so powerful. Poetry often leaves me cold but I did like him.

The monologue in the middle about love not being confined by the rules of men has been a thing that has followed me through my life - having married a foreigner after Theresa May changed the family visa rules and it being a close run thing as to whether we qualified, and seeing the same rules being changed yesterday to effectively make if impossible for someone in their mid 20s to marry who they love from wherever they're from it's something that rings true today.

Agreed. He had much to say, but found a way to say it which meant those that needed to hear it just might listen.

I heard him on Poetry Please (yes, I listen to Radio 4 now I am old) and he reminded me why I like listening to interviews with him.
