Looking again for a headtorch for running after not actually buying one last winter. I have a petzl bindi for emergencies and like the shock cord headband and also lightness

  1. The nitecore seems to fit the bill - is it bright enough for trail running , alone, in the peaks?

I’ve not got the ultra lite version (mine is half cord) but it’s mighty bright.  I suspect any modern headtorch would be enough.

really pleased with mine.

I got the nu21 as it's simpler to operate then the 25 and also a bit lighter/more compact.

Only used it for camping a couple  of times so far but it seems great. Really nice even beam.

I'd say it was up to running in the higher modes, but does lack spot/flood adjustment which you might want

They're the exact same size according to the specs. The NU25UL is 1g heavier, but has a 30% higher capacity battery.

I've got a NU25UL, but I only really got it for bikepacking. I'm happy with it, but I've no idea what it'd be like for trail running.

If you read the pdf manual you can see the NU25 has more modes/options etc.

I actively wanted to avoid that as I just wanted simplicity of operation. This was based on a few YouTube reviews that suggested the NU25 was actually a downgrade in terms of ease of use, unless you were particularly bothered about the different functions.

Yeah. Fair enough. I was only disputing "more compact" really.

This is an issue with most modern torches.  However the NU25 does separate the on/off/brightness and mode to 2 different buttons.

Only looking at the instructions just now that a double click turns it on in ultraslow mode. What it doesn't have is any memory that I can find - so you need to turn it on, select your level of brightness, then if you want flood or spot instead of both, select that.  But when you've switched it off it just turns back on on low and both emitters.

Whats weird is that the linked page instructions talk about changing colour temperature with the mode button rather than spot/flood and (rabbit hole) it looks like that's what the latest 'MCT' version does.  I've got the NU25 - 400l (400 lumen) which has flood and spot.
