Mad? I've heard that there might well be a Switch 2 next year, but the wee one is only six and cares not for 4k support or multiple screen support.
She just asked if she could put it on her Santa list as her cousin has one and has already decided my Xbox belongs to her now so she can play minecraft even though she doesn't have a clue what she's building or why she's slaughtering pigs.
Just wanted some real world opinions......and daddy quite fancies the Zelda game.
The switch is great but i think I read somewhere that the second version is no longer going to be hand held but TV only. Have a look for that as I might be speaking rubbish. If I'm not talking mince then I think thats a big mistake by Nintendo and I'd just get the one thats out now.
Ours is used heavily by our kids 7 & 8
Games have a bit of a premium, but older ones are dead cheap on the eshop
Do it
I think we're getting one for our 7 year old . I'm quite looking forward to it too 😁
Great parental controls on them, so I can easily set limits from my phone. Really pisses her off😀
We got one last Christmas for our kids 9 and 11. They both like it and some of the games are a good laugh. I had to spend my evenings playing Mario kart so I didn't get my arse handed to me!
Like the portable aspect as one can watch TV whilst the other plays on the switch.
Aftermarket controllers are a bit of a minefield and Nintendo ones are eye wateringly expensive.
Switch is great. Zelda is awesome. Get both.
Zelda is hands down one of the best games I’ve ever played. Beautiful art style too. There are also some great indie games on the store. Hollow Knight in particular is phenomenal. Plenty of kid and family games as well. My six year old and I have had fun with Labo and playing Mario Kart, Yoshi’s Crafted World and Luigi’s Mansion.
Sorry to sort of hijack the thread a bit but I’m after a games console too for my son (7 and a half) this Xmas. Considered a switch but all his pals seem to have x-box’s or PS4’s. He likes mario kart on the iPad and I think he’d prefer some of the driving games on the consoles I mentioned, plus FIFA, minecraft etc. Seemed like he’d outgrow a switch pretty quickly? Thoughts?
Next gen X box and playstation are due to release soon. It depends if their mates upgrade or not as to what would be the best route.
Should have said - budget won’t extend to the forthcoming versions.
Xbox series s is one of the new forthcoming versions.
It's 250, so pretty much same ball park price as current ones. Lesser graphics or something compared to the £500 ones, but still new release. Should be future proof for a few years.
Seems to me to be about right for the kids Christmas present, 8 & 6. I'll have to help them with it too 🙂.
Op, Was trying to get the switch earlier in lockdown, but was no stock anywhere. Friends kids love theirs and they're 12 so I don't think growing out of it is a real problem. There's always Mario kart.
Downside with Switch from what I can see is that there aren't actually that many games. For grownups, yes Zelda is good - my wife is playing it, but once it's completed I can't see what else she's going to enjoy.
And the games are expensive, and there's a strong feeling of being milked. My kids wanted Pokémon Sword when they got it - it's £50. Ok, whatever, a 'big' title. Now they also want Pokémon Shield, because it has a few different Pokémon in it. And that's apparently all it is - the exact same game with a few different characters in it. And it's another £50. On any other platform more characters would be DLC. Then there's Let's Go Eevee (another £50) which is a different game but basically exactly the same. Let's Go Pikachu (yet another £50).. I have not compared the content but I have my suspicions.
And there's no shared play like there is/was on PSP so if you have two switch owners who want to play with each other they BOTH need to pay the £50. On PS4 we hardly buy any full price games as you don't really need to. Their most played games on PS4 are Minecraft £8, Lego Worlds £25, Cat Quest £10 and so on. Now I haven't shopped extensively on Switch but this seems to be how it goes in our house.
Oh and if you want to play on TV then a standalone controller is really useful. The official ones are quite cheap feeling, they don't have rechargeable batteries and they're sixty quid. Fortunately some good third party options. If you want a second TV dock it's a staggering £130 from Nintendo! For a cheap plastic port replicator and a USB-C power supply - and don't think you can use any old USB-C - it has to be the Nintendo one.
Cheers molgrips and loum, good points regarding the switch, which has reinforced my view to skip it.
Considered a switch but all his pals seem to have x-box’s or PS4’s
Get him an Xbox or PS4 then so he can play with his mates, take new games round etc. I love my switch but the love is strongly influenced by nostalgia and the fact I'm not really a 'gamer'.
There are also very good local co op games. I've spent hours playing super Mario deluxe and Luigi's mansion co op with family.
Now they also want Pokémon Shield, because it has a few different Pokémon in it. And that’s apparently all it is
Pokémon was always like this even the original red/blue. Tell them to convince their mates to get the other and then they can trade Pokémon.
Downside with Switch from what I can see is that there aren’t actually that many games. For grownups
You're making the assumption I'm a grown up? 😀
I think i'm pretty much sold on the Switch idea, good advice all round here. She's 6 so she's not delving into the realms of what her pals are playing, all she wants to do is dance and build what appears to be a block of flats in Minecraft. But she does like Mario Kart and me and the missus aren't Call of Duty players really so I get the feeling i'll wile away the hours of Super Mario
Cheers all
Pokémon was always like this even the original red/blue.
But was it £50 a pop? Basically £100 to get all the characters. No way is that £100's worth of game.
It's a good platform for kids, don't get me wrong, but the sheer cost of it all grates. And because it's what the kids want, I can't help but feel they're capitalising on the pester effect.
For a kid that isn't trying to keep up with their mates and grinding fortnite, a switch is perfect.
The nintendo only games are generally stunning and the reason for he premium. Porting cross platform games probably isn't cheap, hence the apparent premium for those generic titles
eg Mario Kart, unmatchable on any other platform.
Yoshis crafted world is beautifully made
Mario/sonic olypmpics goes someway toward what set the wii apart
Theres a bunch of cheap developer games (from free) that will entertain you for hours.
As an adult, I loved unravel two and fall flat. Yes cross platform ports but theres loads of content available.
Some games dont have multiplay ability without a second switch and a second copy e.g. Splatoon, and I made the mistake of buying before realising.. however each game shows explicitly on the case/eshop how they work. Lego games are all multiplayer on the switchm ariokart, yoshi, sonic olypics etc all work with 2+ players on the same console same software
Don't get the cheaper Switch lite, get the full fat one. The removeable joycons are entirely rechargeable and we added 2 additional Orzly wired controllers for cheap.
But was it £50 a pop? Basically £100 to get all the characters. No way is that £100’s worth of game.
It was on the gameboy so probably not, maybe £25 each although tbh it was years ago and I can't remember. I don't think the idea of having different Pokémon on each game is to buy both games though, it's to encourage trading.
Nintendo will happily take all your money I'm not denying that I just don't think it's the intention in this case. Plus, I just googled it and you can't trade between both on the same console so it'd be fairly pointless unless you've got two switches.
