Does anyone know if the built in speaker on a Switch console will still work if a microphone is plugged in?

My boy wants a headset for his birthday but I want to be able to hear what's being said to him. At the moment, he plays with no connection so we can hear all of his friends voices but can't reply. I want him to be able to talk back, but not at the loss of hearing what other's are saying (some pretty vile stuff is suggested to have been said by certain individuals, that's what I want to monitor)

I've asked the experts in my house. They assure me that the answer is no.

Would an old style 3.5mm splitter work? One side to his headset, the other to a speaker?

FYI the headphone jack in a switch is so weak it can't drive two sets of in-ear type headphones.

Could you try this, add a mic to one and a battery powered speaker to the other?

Edit: Search Amazon for: VIOY Headphone Mic Splitter, 3.5mm TRRS Audio Splitter Cable for Headphones Jack Adapter Microphone and Headphone Splitters
