Anybody have one of these? Does it bare any resemblance to the good old Wii?
Was going to try and set the old Wii up for Christmas for five minutes of fun before one of the controllers goes flying through the telly, or the kids beat each to death with them.
Unfortunately one of the controllers is completley dead and I keep getting outbid on ebay for getting hold of a new one (having to bid on entire consoles rather than controllers). If I pony up for a switch will it be 'family fun' or are they just PS/X types things with another label?
Switch is Def family fun. Not a cheap setup though, you need a non - lite switch (300 or so) another pair of joy cons (60) plus a couple of first party Nintendo games (mario party would be my first choice, 40-50 each).
If you want bits for your current setup UK.webuy.com (cex) is a shop experience with reasonable pricing on some stuff
Loads of fun, plenty of less serious "family" games.
We have an OLED one as it cane in a pokemon colour scheme but if its docked with the tv it might as well be one with a boggo screen!
Linked below is a bundle with switch sports and a Nintendo online sub. If you like a bit of retro gaming then the online sub lets you stream all manner of legacy nintendo and sega titles.
Get the oled then you can use it hand held too. Be aware they are addictive though.
The zelda games are amazing and Mario is a laugh
We bought one a couple of years ago when the Wii died. It's ace.
Switch is very versatile, lots of fun, great fun on travels and plenty powerful enough for real games. Subnautica is a great port over from the Playstation 4. You can detach the main body of the console, use the hand controllers independently (like the Wii) or dock them into a hand controller shell to use like a mini TV/console arrangement - useful on a plane/train to stop you looking down all the time. You can also dock the body and use the output through HDMI on the TV.
You can also move seamlessly between the three options. which is really useful if the kids are using the TV in a docked console, they can detach and keep playing allowing someone else to use the TV.
T'is expensive though. Games are expensive and the OLD consolve, case, screen protector etc all add up quickly.
I think it is too expensive for a family console (that has been out since 2017, surely it will be replaced soon and become worthless).
I just scrounged a PS4 and we are loving Rayman Legends. Probably get one for £100.
Switch is brilliant for family fun. We bought one for the kids' last Christmas along with extra controllers. OLED but as mentioned about if its docked and outputting to the TV via HDMI the standard one is fine.
I need to up my game as the kids can now anniliate me at Mariokart with ease.
I love my switch..
The family love my switch..
The kids love my switch..!
Bomberman, mariocart, mario wonder, unravelled, it takes 2 etc...all great multiplayer games.
Zelda TOTK is the best game I've ever played - it's fab.
Yeah, it's not as powerful as the Xbox series X, but the gameplay is great!
Much much better than the Wii.
DrP

From what I can gather it's going to be more of a refresh than an outright replacement. That said never underestimate Nintendos desire to make you buy something again.
My lad wants one but I chipped the Wii and we have nearly 150 games for it so I keep saying no.
That's what I intend doing @thepodge but my wife says we wait until my son is absolutely desparate to have a games console as at the moment he's not
My better half loves her Switch, I barely use it, but had a fun session of Fast RMX the other day for first time in over a year.
Might be worth thinking about Xbox, as there seems to be a sale war going on, as of this morning Amazon were doing new Seris S for ~£190 and Series X for ~£342, now seriously pondering one instead of splashing out on a gaming pc! 😮
Get the oled then you can use it hand held too.
This is such an odd comment.

How old are they?
I'm still destroying my 10-year-old at it.
Much much better than the Wii.
+1
Especially MarioKart.
Maybe not so many games where you wave the controllers about though, if that's what OP was after?
A general Q to go with the OP's - what are good multiplayer games for a dad and 13 / 14 yr old son on this platform?
I got a second hand OLED one this summer and it's exceeded expectations. In my ignorance, I thought it was all about Mario, Pokemon, Zelda etc, but there are so many games and genres out there, including plenty for the family because that has always been one of Nintendo's strengths.
Joycons are good, but not the most intuitive for some games. I picked a 8BitDo Ultimate controller and it's easily on par with any other controller I've ever used.
Nintendo's online eshop has a very outdated look and feel to it, but you can create a wishlist of games and use a couple of apps to give you a heads up on discounts etc. Quite a few games have free demos too.
Defo worth getting the OLED IMO as the clarity/quality is better than previous gen. Worth considering second hand too as retail boxes rarely offer much in the way of discount.
FTR, portability is epic, eg back of the car on a journey, out in the garden on a summer's eve etc... can't do this with PS or Xbox (but can we a Steamdeck or similar).

MarioKart obvs
And I'd suggest 51 Worldwide Games, for quick fun classics: 51 Worldwide Games (Nintendo Switch) : Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games
Wii, Switch and Ps5 currently playable in our house (i.e. all plugged in)
PS5 is the best console but the Switch is best for family fun. Lots of short, easy and fun games that can be played as a family
It Takes Two is good fun, nice two-player co-op, challenging but not too hard. We've also enjoyed Streets of Rage 4 (good soundtrack as well).
Fantastic little console for family fun. Extra joy-cons aren’t cheap though. It’s also brilliant as an Indy games machine with some fantastic releases on the store. A switch is worth it for the comedy genius of Heave Ho alone. Almost died of laughter from playing that game a few times.
There are rumours of a replacement on the horizon. If a young family I’d avoid xbox. Other than the staples of Minecraft and Roblox there aren’t a great deal of family friendly multiplayer games.
We’ve got one. My 8yo loves it. I love it. We played Mario Kart head to head on the Eurostar which is frankly incredible use of technology. We bought non-OLED and I don’t regret that - 99% docked in our usage so I saved the cash.
Mario Kart a must.
Mario Odyssey is incredible - it’s probably even better than my favourite ever game growing up (Mario64)
We’ve got Mario Wonder coming for Christmas (I can’t wait).
I’m gonna treat myself to Zelda at some point.
Love it. I don’t know whether it does ‘Tennis with your granny’ like the Wii did, which is what the OP wanted?
Nintendo Switch Sports came out last year and is basically some of the old Wii Sports ones (tennis, bowling) plus some new.
