Are there any camera experts in that can help.

Wife is a dentist and uses a Nikon D90 (?) for photographing teeth.
She has said she needs a macro lens and ring flash.

Can anybody tell me what to look for as I have no idea.
I know some lenses cost a fortune - but lets keep this as cheap as possible eh :0)

The macro lens and the ring flash are 2 separate bits of kit. What is your budget? If she is the photographer, surely she will have a good idea what she wants? Macro lenses have varying focal lengths so this would be the first thing to ascertain I’d think.

Macro lens suggestions here - but as above, you need to have a chat with her to narrow down her thinking.

I have a sigma 105mm 1:2.8 DG macro HSM which so far has taken excellent photos. Best thing about it is it's half the price of the Nikon equivalent.

The working distance will probably be a factor. I’d be looking for advice/particular requirements from dentist/s to pair with advice from macro photographers.

*Edit, argh, I give up trying to create a search link! Paste this into google?:

Oh and you'll be looking at £200-300 minimum, even used - not sure what your idea of 'cheap as possible' is.

First of all IANADent .
Nikon used to make a dedicated range of medical macro lenses - ideal for dentistry search medical nikkor - and they had built in ring flash .
Just search "medical nikkor" you will find a 200mm macro lens - not sure how well that will behave with crop sensor and these only work with manual focus but for macro that is not a big issue.
Otherwise a long - 90mm plus will be needed so as not to put the camera up the patients nose.
Led ring flash are cheap and will mount on all lenses .
With some simple experimentation a working setup can be found - ie fixed settings that get the exposure/flash consistent.
Oh , and as said above there will be dentists doing this everywhere.

I have a Nikon D3100 with the standard kit 18-55 lens. Just tried it as I thought it was ok close up despite not being labelled macro. Seems like it would do the job if you can get the lighting right.

Luckily LED ring flashes are cheap enough now, but for even less hassle I'd go for an LED ring light, so you can see what you're doing while setting up the shot, you can get one that screws straight on to the filter ring of your lens, £36.
