My 12 year old daughter has decided she wants the L320 version of this as she can get it for her £100 birthday money.

So is it a pile of tat or ok for the money and what alternatives are there for that price?

It's a Nikon, what's not to like? My first digital camera was a Coolpix 5700, which I bought in 2003, IIRC. 5Mp, 8x optical zoom, and it cost me £800, and the 1Gb CF card was £200.
Things have moved on a bit, but it took damn good photos.
This is one of the very first photos I took with my Nikon, in November 2003, about six or seven rows back in the Bristol Hippodrome.
I still think it's one of my best, and it shows how good Nikon bridge cameras are:
