Recently got into trail running and started running home from work. Now it's dark I don't really want to run through the heath between my work and house as it's a bit of a dodgy spot after dark.

My options are:

1. Take a paved route home.
2. Mix a bit of paved and different (safer) woods.
3. Drive to a woods/field.

I'd get more time if I run straight from work but than means option 1 or 2. My only worry is my trail shoes will likely wear quickly on the road and would rather not spend more money on more shoes right now.
Option 3 would mean less run time and problems with parking dur8ng rush hour. It would also be easy to just drive home and not run.

1st world problem bit what would STW do?

Option 1 - I doubt that the surface will mean new shoes are required that much quicker than an off road route. I'd just stick to lit pavements, spraining an ankle because you've put your foot in a hole you couldn't see because of leaf litter is not fun.....

Aye, what he said, the effect on your trail shoes will be negligible.

What's dodgy about this heath?

I would gonfor 2, I hate tarmac.
.
How unsafe is it?
Runners aren't an obvious target, fit(ish? I don't know you) will be hard to catch, could be a bit fighty and are less are likely to be carrying anything worth nicking.
.
Wear an 'Edinburgh kickboxing club' T-shirt for your run, or something like that. Makes you look even less of a good target

Option 2. Unless your shoes are something fairly specialist like La Sportiva Ultra Raptors or Innov8 Mud Claws, I wouldn't worry much about excessive wear.

I'm not sure what the problem with the heath is, after all you're already running away before they see you

In my experience of night running and riding, you are the weirdo in the woods….

no. 2. Variety and all that. Also Buy a couple of pairs of Aldi/Lidl etc running shoes for £15 a pair and wear them down.
