So, we have an 8yo who won’t go to sleep without a night light. The one we have is USB rechargeable but the battery is failing. We’re looking for something dim (to discourage reading after ‘lights out’) that can be left plugged in and can be set to go off after an hour. Anyone got any recommendations?
(Yes, I know we should be weaning this off but the 10yo won’t stay in bed and frankly we can’t cope with both of them doing it).
I’ve got one that’s plugged into an electrical socket at the top of the stairs. Got it from Wilco’s, (where else!), and it’s been there for years. It’s an amber light with an arched top. Comes on as it gets dark.
Just had a look, and I can’t find that one, but I have found this one, which has a light sensor, rather than a motion sensor, and it has a colour change function that can be paused at a selected colour.
Edit: Just read the bit about having it timed - I couldn’t find anything with that ability, but you could just get a timer plug, and plug the light into it, it’ll come on once it gets dark enough, then the timer would switch it off.
Not the cheapest option but the hue white ambiance bulbs go really dim. Definitely too dim to read by. Can set them to go with a timer or whatever takes your fancy.

That’s what we do too, after buying a few “nightlights” that were too bright, realised the hue bulbs we had could be adjusted and timed to suit.
We just covered one with layers of masking tape to make it dimmer
We have a couple - mainly to stop tripping over the black dog who may be lying innocently at the top of the stairs. Amazon choice ones, £4.99, LED and very low light level
Another vote for Hue. Expensive but the night light mode and various settings/timers make it worthwhile.
I got one of these for the landing, so I could go for a wazz in the middle of the night without turning on all the lights or connecting with a mobile trip hazard cat at the top of the stairs. It's brilliant.
Pass-through power so you don't lose a socket; three different colours which sounded kinda gimmicky but are actually varying degrees of brightness; and a rapidly responsive light sensor which turns it on progressively relative to ambient lighting.
The one minor criticism would be that it's slightly too wide (by like 2mm) to fit a second one next to it on a typical double wall socket. You'll fit a regular plug or wall-wart next to it though.
We bought a Tommee Tippee sleep trainer clock for our 2/3 year old. You turn it manually to a night colour at bedtime and it auto turns to a day colour at a preset time. You might not need the clock functions of it but the colours are fully customisable via an app as well as dimmable so low it’s barely on.
How about an original style lava lamp on a timer/smart plug?
We have one in the childrens room and they like to watch it as it hypnotises them to sleep. Doesn't produce enough light to read by but just a gentle glow in the colour of your choosing.
If you do have a wall socket available I have an Echo Flex plus one of these attached to it that might work for your situation: https://www.amazon.co.uk/All-New-Night-Amazon-Third-Reality/dp/B07VDPY2RL
I use the motion sensor version (triggers the hallway Hue light to come on) but this version should just work on it's own as a schedulable night light (but that you could also turn off and on via voice or app if you wanted)
@pocpoc That's a good shout.
Current thinking is to persuade her she's too grown up to need a night light in her room, when there's one on the landing that's not going anywhere. Wish me luck.
The issue with lava lamps is the fact they get very hot – I would be slightly concerned about having one in a bedroom for a younger child who could quite easily knock it over and break it (which is also very messy given the contents).
One of our daughters likes to have a bit of light in her room (and I don't see why a child should be 'weaned off' it if it helps them settle) but we got her a galaxy night light which she loves.
i've a hue in my daughter's room..
"alexa, goodnight" turns off all the lights, and dims hers to 5 or 10%
DrP
We have one of these. Nothing automated but it goes bright enough to read with and scales down the brightness all the way to a very slight night light.

I have one at 13 who is not scared of the dark but still prefers to have some light - perhaps if she tidied her room so she can get across it she would have less need. I've got bigger battles to fight than this so never been motivated to stop it.

Is she happy with the going off after an hour? Ours isn't really about the going to sleep its the disorientation in total darkness if she wakes up that she doesn't like.
FWIW if she wants to sneakily read after "lights out" I would very actively encourage this! We would be delighted if (1) she would read more (her brother and mother are both big readers) to help her spelling, vocab, etc; (2) she would have a habit that encouraged her not to have the phone in her hand every waking moment (especially in the last hour before actually going to sleep). I appreciate you maybe don't have the smartphone social media overload yet - but you will. If her habits are built that she reads before sleep I think you may have an easier time of that!
How about a Nebula Sky Projector?
Not bright enough to read by, can be dimmed, LED so doesn't get hot, runs off USB, turned off with a timer etc and looks nice too.
The one I've got isn't on Amazon anymore, but the Blisslight ones (Blisslights Sky Lite 2.0) have loads of recommendations.
@poly Current light up unicorn goes off after an hour and she doesn’t seem fussed. She gets put to bed half an hour before lights out, and reads though she’s stuck a chapter from the end of Prisoner of Azkaban as it’s too scary 🤦♂️
