so up ahead can see speed camera going off on gantry bridge going off like a disco strobe light

Can see it says 40 on variable speed limit

smug arse me thinks I'll slow down just below 40 sets speed limiter

car directly in front gets nicked ......wait a minute he's barely going as fast as me I brake to about 35

we go through and BOOM we get nicked

car behind gets nicked he's going a lot slower

WTAF gives here my Mrs is looking at Speedo and satnav going I'm sure it said 40

BIL drives HGV and says tough shit proving that mate he's been done exact same thing

Do you have the ticket? If not you haven't been nicked for anything.

You’ve not been nicked you’ve been flashed... if you weren’t speeding don’t worry about it. Especially if it’s flashing everything - will just be a fault.

No but reading up its a fully automated system from start to issue so looks like it's coming

Will let you know if it comes though.

I suppose the leading up question would be if it issues one what the chuff do I do my word against theirs I suppose

Haha, this level of panic and they will be giving pensioners camera flashes to sit on motorway bridges to go with the ones holding hair dryers at side of the road 😀

I'd be panicking too.

I bet you get a ticket unfortunately. Hope I'm wrong. What's the limit, 6 weeks?

The yellow ones to one side of the road or the ones above each lane on the gantry?  The yellow ones seem to flash almost randomly. I got flashed about a year ago but nothing came of it.

Only chance of arguing it (if get ticket) is with dashcam footage clearly showing the speed indicated on the sign

The pictures are taken and set intervals, if there were the white lines painted on the ground surely you'd be able to prove your speed? Or lack of.

I've been 'flashed' several times on the M42, never had a ticket - also been seagulled on the M40 but that's a completely different story.

The issue will be what the variable speed limit was set at at the time - If it was saying 40, but should have been saying 30, then you'll have a hard time proving it...

I've never had a ticket from one of those, so don't know if they come with a picture of the gantry or not...

I'll see if I can dig it out I link the page where it states that the cameras are on the same system as the boards. If the boards say 40 then the cameras work to that limit.

If it comes to it you could foa the traffic monitoring cameras.

They could have just been flashing every car that went through for calibration purposes.

I'm dealing with someone who seems to have gone through a gantry camera at a recorded 148MPH which is quite impressive. He actually was as well which is the worrying part. I'm amazed it could take a photo !

You sure it was you it flashed?

When I've had them go off behind for neighbouring lanes they seem to light the sky up across the whole road.

I also thought 40mph was as low as smart motorways went? I can't recall ever seeing one set lower than that even when it's crawling (although that could just be my memory).

Nzcol, i think they work up to 155mph, hence the eu wide speed limiter for cars being randomly set at 155mph (250kph)

not that it should matter in the uk of course, but on the autobahn it might

Why would you get nicked if you weren’t speeding?

Didn’t know they stop working at 155mph - time to get the R1 out 😂

I thought that that was just a gentleman’s agreement between German makers, so as not to get involved in a speed arms race? Also thought that you needed to be well north of 300kph to be too fast for a camera

edit, 170mph plus for the uk

I've been through some down to 20 on the M1 (junction 30ish). Was some pedestiran on road incident and both directions were down to that speed.
It was wierd because a constant 20 on and non-congested motorway just felt wrong, but it was obviously something extraordinary so absolutely everyone stuck to it.

You can ask for calibration certificates etc in court to prove it was working OK

I've seen them regularly set at 30 and even 20 on the M25 late at night when they're planning roadworks. Unsurprisingly it's ignored by everyone.

The gantry cameras have flashed me when rolling through at about 46 indicated in a 40 but no ticket arrived.

Childish I know, but with LED headlights you can give a very convincing double flash when the Range Rover goes rocketing past at over a ton in the outside lane.

A cal cert won’t help, it’ll just tell you that it was calibrated at some point, not that it then developed a fault

Just to balance all the stories of getting flashed and not pinged, I got had by the gantry on the m5 Bristol a couple of months ago whilst it displayed no speed limit.  12:30 at night dry and clear coming home from airport harrumph.

A neighbour is a 12 month ban for speeding on the M25, all done with points totting up. Every offence was committed over a 10 day period in variable speed limits. Also, there's a new type of camera, the Hadecs 3, which is mounted off to the side of the variable speed gantries, it's small and difficult to spot.

The ones on the M3 south of the M25 are massive, and very easy to spot if you know to look for them.

They are still painted yellow.

What do you mean by nicked... Arrested? You might get a fine or points but you're not likely to be "nicked" mate.

Its the Hadec ones that I've seen flashing randomly.  I think they have now turned them off around here.
