Hi,
I need to take my Mum for a nice walk followed by a pub lunch. Somewhere between Oxford and Banbury.
Any advice? Doesn't need to be a particularly long walk. Good pub food is the priority.
Go for a nice walk in Oxford and either stay there or go out to The Bell, hampton Poyle. LOADS of nice pubs but you have given a HUGE distance range!
Somewhere round Witney and Carterton? To be fair I know that's more West Oxfordshire.
Rose Revived at Newbridge on the A415. Walk along the Thames cross ten-foot high bridge and walk back on the other side.
How about Woodstock, there are a few pubs to choose from and the walk around the lake in the Blenheim Palace grounds isn't too long (either walk through the Woodstock gate where you may need to pay or walk down the A44 and use the footpath entrance opposite the Black Prince pub for free entry).
Thrupp, walk down the canal and an old plague village to look at.
or Blenheim and Woodstock, you can walk in the bridle way entrance for free, just can not get up to the palace without paying. pub opposite the bridleway, the black prince is one of my favourite pubs, small, nice food and proper local without the nose in the air, booking is essential as its popular due to being so close to Blenheim.
What type of pub are you looking for? ie how good? pub food or Michelin star?
Nice pub food. Not Michelin star level.
I should add Oxford is my home town and I learnt to ride a bike in Blenheim's grounds. My Mum's friend lived by the back gate and would let us park on their drive 🙂
I was looking for somewhere a bit different, somewhere my Mum (who has lived in Oxford all her life) probably wouldn't have been. A nice walk followed by a pub lunch for £10-£15?
Couldn't recommend The Rose Revived. I'd opt for The Blue Boar in Longworth if you're around there. Nice walking between Old Minster, Crawley and Witney. Swan at Minster or The Lamb at Crawley.
To be honest, Serge The Seal of Death, I doubt she has been to the plague village... Delightful as it sounds.
Are you a real seal?
No, but I do have Singletrack issue 1 and live in Long Hanborough.
Actually used to live on Blenheim, Back gate, you mean the exit at Bladon?
For a really nice pub try the Royal Oak in Ramsden, can do a walk around Charlbury but would then need to get in the car, must be some nice pubs in Charlbury though. or if you are thinking 30/40 minute walk, use the Hand and shears in Freeland that's good, there is a wood, (pinsleys) right next door which once the blue bells are out is amazing,( also good cycling) nice outer circle walk of the wood is free.
Nice. Cheers all.
Blimey, I grew up in North Oxfordshire. But been a long time since I've been back (so caveats that anywhere I recommend might no longer be up to much...).
How about the Saye and Sele Arms in Broughton. Walk through the grounds of Broughton Castle (or even visit the castle itself) and then lunch at the pub?
(Other places that used to be OK: Wykham Arms in Sibford Gower, Moon & Sixpence in Hanwell and - possibly - my old local, the Horse & Groom in Milcombe).
Serge, It's the Hand and Shears in Church Hanborough, The Oxfordshire Yeoman in Freeland - that's nice too.
Don't forget the Roman villa remains up in East End - nice walk between there and Stonesfield.
