Trying to find a nice deciduous woodland near Manchester to potter around on Saturday morning while the leaves are all autumnal. Any suggestions?

The Edge at Alderley Edge. And book lunch in the Wizard pub, or go for tea and cake at the cafe behind it.

Hardcastle Craggs in Hebden.

Hadn't been there for 30 years, in fact I'd forgotten all about it. Nice one. Think I'll take the kids there soon.

Back Woods and Great Woods in Broadbottom, nice scenery plus the remains of the old cotton factory including some very deep dye vats to look at then lunch at Lymefield Garden centre, also Lymefield visitors centre for the kids with its little maze and adventure playground nearby.

Goyt Valley
Lyme Park (near Disley)
Little bit further south still, if you can be bothered heading down to Ashbourne, Dove Dale is a stunning walk.
