You are all ****ing brilliant, thanks.
This makes no sense.
I know you're going for the 'ol bait and switch post, but still.
Missus pointed out last night that if we went full EDL "Send 'em all back home" then she'd be the only consultant left at her hospital!
That my be the copious amounts of morphine!
That my be the copious amounts of morphine!
It'll do that too you.
Unless you're immune to it, like the poor sod in that film Kajaki I watched last night.

Thats pretty shocking, we would have no cleaners left in our work if that happened.

Not in the best of taste.

Cranberry, if you want to talk about doctors killing people with morphine I reckon home grown Dr Shipman has got the edge....
Not in the best of taste.
Are you trying to be a **** or is it accidental, I'm a bit impaired right now and cant tell.
It is true - Shipman made us world leaders in the field, but the point I was trying to subtley make was that absolute statements about a diverse group of people are a bit over the top, both when for and against something.
"All the immigrants that I have dealt with in the NHS have been excellent" - a fair statement to make ( though I wonder how you check - "excuse me miss, but before you put that needle in me, are you an immigrant ? I'm making a list, you see." ? )
I have an extremely high tolerance to morphine so it has very little effect on me. After surgery last year they had to give me IV ketamine to help with the pain. That was an interesting experience.
I agree - its far better that we rob the developing world of their doctors and nurses rather than train our own.

that's as loose a grasp on the situation as youre going to get
It's OK, the consultant who lopped off my extraneous finger yesterday said she's emigrating to New Zealand in August. That's technically the developing world isnt it?
I agree - its far better that we rob the developing world of their doctors and nurses rather than train our own.
Sadly the reality is we just don't have enough doctors coming through our own training to meet demand.
But luckily foreign doctors fill that gap and will continue to do so as long as we have a good strong pound, freedom of movement and a welcoming attitude to immigrants...
Not in the best of taste.
Too soon?

plenty of doctors, they just either don't want to work here (understandable) or they go into different fields.
Sad thing is that although there are those from abroad that come here to work, I've yet to meet one that I would recomend (there are a few UK ones too)
Too soon?
As we haven't heard from him, it might actually be too late.

Interesting, perhaps UK Uni medical courses should only be available to those who sign a commitment to work in the NHS for 10 years ? I say this as UK Unis even with tuition fees are not self financing. Nothing to stop them studying in Spain and its much easier to get a place there if they don't want to sign up.
dentistry does this if you get a bursery from them, think its 5 years
Do immigrant nurses, doctors and other healthcare workers have to pay the Immigrant Health Surcharge to access the service they provide?
I don't think you understand the meaning of immigrant
I work with folk from:
Eire
Poland
Romania
India
Bangladesh
****stan
France
Malta
Germany
Scotland
Philippines
Australia
Wales
Spain
Russia
England
and Huddersfield.
They all talk proper after a few years with me.
the reason we have to import medical staff is we dont train enough here.. whys that .. because places on courses are severely limited.. whys that? quotas isnt it.. set often with at least the agreement of the clinicians representatives.. much better that mary smith with her three a* a levels does geography degree at newcastle than gets a spot in medicine that she d really like and we have to import more medical staff that may or may not have as good as qualifications as poor mary had in the first place..
ninfan

See the people that come here to work in the NHS and other fields. They become "our
own". You just don't get it do you?
Yeah have to agree, why would I study for 7 years to train to be a doctor when I can earn double the amount working in finance with non of the stress?
Nursing degrees are far crazier! Cost a fortune and you dont get paid much to pay it off.
One of the nurses looking after me was an ex pupil, was a bit emarassing arriving on the ward face down arse in the air in full lycra!

The (free) market's a bitch, huh?

How did she recognise you in that position 🙂
then she'd be the only consultant left at her hospital
Queue new contract strike action...btw just how do these foreign doctors etc etc get contracted seems like a win win for them
Blame the government for not increasing the funds to match the increased use and needs.
If anything they contribute to a decrease in its income.
I agree - its far better that we rob the developing world of their doctors and nurses rather than train our own.
Yeah, except they don't really. My wifes cousins are nurses in the Philippines and they had to go out to Libya initially to get enough experience to actually be employed in the Philippines.
What it does is it turn certain countries into the equivalent of low-cost puppy farms for medical personnel, as these countries have high birth rates and high unemployment. Although this is changing now that the Philippines is experiencing circa 8% growth.

What that would do, would just kill off a lot of interest among British students in going to medical school in the first place and likely ruin standards within the profession.
Where I work in the NHS, a lot of the foreigners are porters or cleaning staff, there are a few doctors and more so nurses.
I can't remember exactly when it was, but approx 5 yrs ago the government changed its mind so a lot of Indian docs with non UK qualification were sent packing (they did many of the hours no one else wanted to do). You would not believe how understaffed some hospitals are at the minute!
The government has gone through periods of reducing doc training posts (that is on the job post uni ) & nursing training posts in the UK.
Recently more Trust have had to go in to Europe or the Far East to recruit nursing staff as there simply are not UK trained nursing staff who want to work in the NHS.
Most worrying now is that as NHS pay falls, and conditions worsening, these migrants are starting to leave to others countries with better pay and conditions
Do all immigrants work for the NHS then?
