Hi been doing some research on affordable 7 in tablets. The Nexus is the obvious choice, dont want to get crippled by the Amazon tie in and lack of apps. So the Nexus is the obvious choice, After doing some research you cant help but not ignire the build quality issues that are all over the web ! Just wondered whether its a real world issue on the basis on the hundreds of thousands of units sold.
Has anyone experienced the hardware problems reported. i.e screen lifting / detaching, dead screen pixels, light bleed onto the screen and ghosting ? Charger issues and touch screen failures ?
I had one for a month or so and the screen started lifting on the side. I could have probably sent it back to Google (I think it was the early ones bought from the Play store which seemed to be affected) but it was a two minute job to flip the back off with a plectrum and tighten the screws up - there are more permanent solutions detailed on the web, but that seemed to work ok.
No issues with anything else though... very nice bit of kit, but I sold it for an iPad mini as it plays better with the rest of my gadgets.
Had it a month now, beautiful bit of kit. Glass front and strange (but good) plastic back that has a grippy rubber quality to it. No creaking, flexing or scratches so far.
It's selling in huge numbers, any product that does that will have documented problems, even supposedly quality products.
Google iPhone problems....or BMW faults....or Honda failures etc etc....and you'll get plenty of results even though these are generally safe purchases.
If the particular product you've bought isn't fit for purpose then it can always be returned.
Couple of months with no problems
No issues here.
Thats all encouraging, I know its strange asking tech gadget questions on a MTB forum, but if you look at all the geek forums you do tend to get a very non real world response. With people saying that they have returned 10 units consecutively which cant right surely ??
Good thread. I was wondering the very same. Did not want to go deep into some of the techy forums.
Mine has been faultless, even after dropping it and putting a dent in the corner.
We've had three here in the office and two had to go back. One with sound issues and another with a touch screen issue.
Replaced and dealt with excellently by Google and the working one has been fine. A bit of a worry but on the whole I'd say the Nexus, even with the apparent QC issues, is the best tablet buy out there at the moment.
Bought a 16Gb one for MrsP but that had sound issues - sounded like a loose speaker. Not a problem though because I bought it just as the 32Gb was released, so got a refund on that one & bought a 32Gb model to replace it.
so got a refund on that one & bought a 32Gb model to replace it.
Hows the new one been ?
Are the new 32g ones any better ?
The glass on mine started to move a little on one edge relative to the metal screen surround, accompanied by a nice wee creak. Didn't see that tightening anything would have done much, and it wasn't likely to get anything but worse with time so it's gone back.
Ha ha, thread started of encouraging and now more discouraging 🙂 maybe I should re-think the Kindle fire HD, although the lack of apps is a bummer, like sky+ app, strava etc
Mine is totally fine. Only time I have issues is when I've upgraded the OS and the apps need updating. I had a very hurried upgrade of MX Player while a plane was taxiing to avoid the flight without video. And lets be honest, that's my fault, not the fault of the tablet.
Mine's fine, seems a really solid bit of kit. It's one of the newer 32gb versions though so possibly any issues were with the earlier models?
I got one of the first run. I suspect the fact they shipped shitloads will always mean there's a few bad stories.
Had mine for nearly 3 months and no problems at all - as good as they day I bought it.
Get one, they're worth it!
Had mine since the day the 32's were released. No issues. Although there is a little creek if squeezed on the back in area of the power/volume buttons. No screen movement though.
Having said that screen will now probably fall out 😐
Had mine for a couple of months (16Gb version). No problems with build quality at all. Got myself a good case. Only slight niggle is that I do see a bit of a lag since the update to Android 4.2 (and 4.2.1). Is not a big deal, but am hoping that future releases remove the lag (really, it's only a slight one). Good piece of kit - recommended (although I havent seen the Nexus10 yet)
Back to positive reviews then 🙂 Just too many people with issues for my liking
No problems with quality at all, delighted with it.
To be fair though, if you start a thread asking for people who have HAD problems with their Nexus it's going to fill up mostly with people who have had problems. I suspect if we ran a poll on the front page that said simply Nexus? Problems? With the answers 'Yes' or 'No' that you'd find the 'No's' were a small minority.
Yep I guess thats a good shout Mark. It was a bit of an odd opener if I am looking as much for a positive response as a negative one. I suppose I am clutching at straws really. I have £180 burning a hole in my pocket for a 7" tablet. There is no question of doubt that the Nexus 7 is the right spec for the money and exactly what I am after, but what I am not after is hassle of going back and forth battling with shop assistants over refunds and exchanges for faulty goods. If there was an alternative I wouldnt even bother taking the chance. But with a Ipad mini costing double for similar performance and the Kindle Fire HD being just a portal into Amazons retail monopoly then I may have to take a chance
On the off chance, as I'm in the US and they're $250 here (£155 ish) anyone know what the warranty is like - eg if I had a problem how would I get it sorted?
32gb version here, had it for about a month. No hardware issues whatsoever. The 4.2 update wasn't the best in googles history but I'm sure they'll fix the minor bugs in due course. Does the ipad mini do separate user accounts? The fact that the nexus 7 can is a real boon in our house.
No no no and no.
Had mine 16Gb about 6 weeks now.
16 GB here, no problems at all. Fantastic bit of kit.
I've got one from the first batch from Google play store and the screen was lifting, I've just popped the back cover off and tightened the screws and everything is now good,
there was also a creak but this seems to be resolved aswell.
otherwise its a great tablet and jellybean OS is really nice to use.
I would definitely recommend it
Sending mine back to Asus due to a dodgy speaker.
To be fair, as with most things, its not really about the problems you may encounter, but the way they are dealt with that matters.
The speaker is a new one on me, but its reared its head twice on this thread alone
I have now.....
Nexus 7 screen died today...
One minute it was perfect.... next thing you know a 1cm strip down the shorter of the sides, a load of lines on the screen, and it's well and truely FUBAR'd.
Must admit, apart from the fact that my lad uses it a lot... i'm not convinced i'll replace it if they offer me a refund.
Whilst it's a good piece of kit... for me personally it's a bit pointless mostly
I'm on my second. Dropped my first and it landed on the corner and smashed the screen (still works apart from that). But they've both been reliable, no problems other than gravity.
Early adopter had one since they first came out, no problems whatsoever.
How do you pop the back off then. Slight creek here
32gb one from Christmas. Been spot on in the main. Build quality seems great.
32Gb one early December. It fired up for about ten minutes and then just stopped working. Factory reset saw it working again but then it just started rebooting constantly. Another factory reset and it repeated immediately.
Took it back to carphonewarehouse. No more in stock, here's your money back.
Walked over the road to PC World, yes they're in, twenty quid more.
No thanks.

I'm guessing it'll be a hell of a lot worse than a slight creek if you attempt to fix it 🙂
Popping the back off... just google for Nexus 7 screen replacement and it'll show you. Though my second one has a very slight creak and personally I'm not inclined to risk buggering it up just to sort it.
Alternatively you can kick the process off by doing what I did and dropping it onto a tiled floor 😉
know of 3, 2 have had issues with not powering up properly, requiring a 30 second hold of the power button but other than that they seem lovely.
Got the better half a 32Gb model. Can't believe how well she's taken to it !
I've got a latest gen ipad, but the Nexus is a truly fantastic piece of kit for the money ! & for portability, it beats my Ipad hands down. ( fits in her hand bag with ease & is easy to use holding in one hand whilst using the other to type / navigate.
I love both. No issues with either.
Chris

Had mine since it first came out. Great piece of kit', no problems. Still working out what to do with it, as I also have a galaxy note, which I my view the best gadget I've ever owned
