Imagine you're a Russian opposition leader who has recently recovered from attempted assassination with Novichok.

What better way to find out a little more than ringing up an alleged member of the FSB team involved, convincing him that you're an establishment aide called 'Maxim', then getting a full debrief on the attack?

Right up there with travelling to Salisbury for its world-famous spire.

Absolutely, the FSB these days seem to be hopelessly inadequate at their job, it’s the hacking groups like Cozy Bear who’ve been digging through the data stacks of most major US government and businesses for months undetected who seem to have a clue.

The Bellingcat report into how they got the info is fascinating. A few hundred euros and cross referencing info from different databases e.g. cars registered to FSB office, flight and hotel records. I especially liked that the FSB guys use their own first names and their wife or girlfriends surname to make their cover names!

I'm not sure it's whether the FSB are hopelessly inadequate or simply they are brazen and untouchable - they just need cover for the duration of the operation. Once back to mother Russia they are lauded and probably honoured. Bellingcat might be news here, but Putin probably enjoys the propaganda - it's all part of the Russian strategy of distraction and nuisance which consumes massive amounts of western defence resources to keep track. More telling are the cyber attacks that go untraced with unknown consequences
