And all this Sunday's revenue going to good causes looks like news international attempting a bit of damage limitation ...but will it be enough?
glad to see NOTW go though

I have it on good authority, although I clearly can not publish either the transcripts or the original voicemail messages, that this is indeed true.

I'm sure they will just rebrand it "the World of News" and have a relaunch next week.

This Sunday's issue of the News of the World will be the last edition of the paper, News International chairman James Murdoch has said.

No 'allegedly' about it. They must be desperate for the Sky deal to go through to take this step.....

A sad day as the ones responsible responsible will now not be sacked, but made redundant or transfered probably.

I'll believe it when I see it. I reckon sales may well increase this w/e and advertisers will find it hard to stay away

It's Ok we can read it on the BBC website too.

Feeble attempt to win public back.

Is there going to be room at the Daily Star for all these former NOTW bent journos? Clive Goodman's going to end up having to share a desk. He'll hate that 🙂

Not sure this will work though; for NI to take this step they've effectively rolled over and accepted that they're fully culpable.

Rebekah Brooks will clearly go, but the real question is what happens to the rest of the organisation, the one that for the last five years has consistently covered up the fact that they were absolutely guilty as charged.

As someone who detests Sky, The Sun, The News Of The World and all that they stand for, this is almost as good a day as when I heard Thatcher had resigned. Not quite as good, obviously, but still well worth celebrating.

Interesting to see who blinks first.

The people pulling their adverts are on a 'moral' bandwagon at the moment, but how long before Ford start realising Volkswagen are still advertising (and presumably getting sales due to the adverts...).

Good point I suppose if they bring NOTW down. Though expect the prices of advertising Fords to go up on Sky if Murdoch gets the hump!

no DD spot on really in that they have the same views and from the same stable bit different editorships and writers [ if that sounds sarcastic it is not meant to]
Yes nice bold PR move but ditching NOTW which is dead now anyway and launching the Sunday Sun is quite a clever ploy.
Nice to see them running scared for once.

Pretty much bang on. Assuming that there is commercial life left in trashy Sunday papers it wouldn't take a great deal of effort to spend 6 months putting together a new brand identity and launching a new companion paper for the Sun.

We are not alone in our cynicism;

Justice Secretary Ken Clarke said: "All they're going to do is rebrand it" and former deputy prime minister Lord Prescott, who alleged his phone was hacked, thought the decision was simply a gimmick.

All papers are suffering, with dropping reader numbers and dropping advertising revenues, so dropping one will probally do him a favour.

The regular readers will be informed of what to buy next week in this last issue.... 😉

200ish less staff to pay, one less print run etc etc etc

According to my paper :

"The move also opens the way for a seven-day Sun newspaper, which it is believed News International has been planning for some time as part of a cost-cutting drive"

And :

"Ms Brooks, surrounded by her closest allies, then went out on to the newsroom floor to tell the rest of the staff the news.

She said: ''The Guardian newspaper were out to get us, and they got us.'

Observers said that she was crying when she spoke".

So it's the Guardian wot dun it ?

Observers said that she was crying when she spoke".

Radio 4 reported from their 'anonymous source' inside NOTW that she was in there for all of 2 minutes, flanked by security, and she was definitly not crying. But then I expect someone will come along and accuse the Beeb of being partisan about it too. 😕

Lord Prescott interviewed earlier on was well funny. I'd sort of forgotten quite how errr, 'forthright' he can sound sometimes. 😆

In the same way Robert Mugabe is a cut above Pol Pot, in that he hasn't murdered as many of his own people. I wonder just how much of that
real investigative journalism agaist bad guys
was carried out using phone hacking against the innocent people involved?
All the NI tabloids are vile, best used for wiping up dog vomit.

Just heard that Coulson to be arrested this afternoon

Andy Coulson to be arrested over phone hacking tomorrow

"a second arrest is also to be made in the next few days of a former senior journalist at the paper"

It's starting to look like the folding of NoW is in anticipation of full-blown chaos, as the scandal starts resulting in the arrests of senior former staff. It doesn't appear to make any commercial sense.

I am worried that this whole scandal may lead to some sort of legislation that ends up protecting "the establishment" rather than the public.

Anybody got any links to some of this "proper investigative journalism" carried out by the NOTW, they certainly seemed to hide it well behind all the ground-breaking tabloid sleaze.

Great tenacity by the Guardian - did anyone see this coming? They were being ridiculed 2 years back for banging on about the story, having an axe to grind etc (e.g. Sienna Miller's phone hacked by lone PI who's already done time for it - hardly a story that would bring down the NotW). They must have known how deep it ran and it would break open if they just kept chipping away at it.

Mazhur Mahmood

The fake sheik is your best link for investagitive journalism, entrapment and sleaze mongering is the lowest common denominator of investigative journalism.

In 1999, after a Mahmood investigation exposed the Earl of Hardwicke and another man as drug dealers,[13] the jury sent a note to the judge explaining that they had reached their decision to convict the two men with great reluctance. They said that they would have acquitted the defendants if the law had enabled them to take into account the "extreme provocation" they had been under to sell cocaine to Mahmood. The judge agreed and passed suspended sentences.[9][1

Mass share price drop or something?

whats the chances of a total failure

None - all of Murdoch's UK titles, including News of the World, account for just 4% of News Corporation's turnover.

It just seems like another cycnical ploy. Killing off a paper that it seems was going to morph into the Sun on Sunday. Do what you were going to do anyway and perhaps clean out the few troublesome remaining staff with ethics.

Surely its time for campaign to stop the sun rising next week, whole country stop buying the paper for a week. Unfortunately based on ernie's 4% stat it would be a gnatt bite, even if it was possible to do it.

Some legal eagles are suggesting the closure could protect News International from further exposure and legal cases.

Good luck. Everyone will want a historical last ever edition of The News Of The World this Sunday. And everyone will want a historical first ever edition of The Sun On Sunday the following Sunday.

I know I will.

What we now need is a serious investigation, by an investigative newspaper, that dishes the dirt, gets people thinking and the culprits sacked or imprisoned, like which has happened in the past.

Sadly Rupert just closed it.

If voicemails were deleted and / or resulting in investigations being hampered, people should be sent to prison, not sacked.

Anyway, what about the 'Sun day'?
