Not been since the early 90’s when I was young and stupid.

We will be in the area later this summer. Is it worth a day visit with the family or is it still like it was when I used to go in the early 90’s?

I'm going to Cornwall on Saturday for two weeks. Like I do every year.
I will not be going to Newquay. Avoid.

Oooh... where are you going?

We'll be in Looe in August but like to travel about a bit.

We've got Eden, Boscastle, Tintagel, Port Isaac, Flambards, Polperro, Foy, Pendennis and the monkey sanctuary on the list so far.

Last time I was there I spent a night in hospital after my 4 year old inflicted a testicular injury on me which resulted in me passing out in a petrol station in Bodmin. Not doing that again.

Carbis Bay, just round the bay from St Ives.

There are so many awesome places in Cornwall that you'll never need to go to Newquay.

It's alright, but there are so many other nice places to go in Cornwall without going to Newquay.

I'm a miserable git who doesn't like crowds though, so my opinion may not be valid!

I believe it's still full of young and stupid people. Certainly was about five years back, last time I went.

I barely recognised it when I went just over seven years ago (the time before that will have been sometime around 1984).

As others have said - far more nicer places to visit in Cornwall.

I'm off to cornwall-shire in a few weeks.. near mullion.. i've been to all the usual candidates lots of times, but not that area which is why we've chosen it.

i've stayed just across the bay from where 'perchypanther' recommended in the toms holidays bungalows, and in a cottages right in the very heart of st ives. due to parking st ives itself is a bitch to stay in. do the shops etc early in the day as the masses flood in mid morning and leave early evening. (also stayed near cambourne a lot on skateboarding trips & in mousehole with the mrs). use the £1 bus from the leisure centre down to town and back up again to save your legs. st ives has the tate gallery and barbara hepworth house if you want to indulge in some culture.

Been to newquay various times since the mid 90s (used to go to Run To The Sun before it because less and less about VWs) and TBH the place hasn't changed a huge amount in all that time. it was getting a rep for being filled with hen parties, stag dos and there was a lot of trouble caused by under-drinking age posh girls renting cottages and getting shitfaced during their gcses/a-levels. they've been working hard to get rid of that image since then. however, nothing there really appeals either, apart from maybe the zoo. (paignton zoo in devon is the best one in the south west though)

def visit the monkey sanctaury near looe, + heligan gardens, eden. .

tintagel worth a visit just once if you don't mind climbing the steps. flambards if its wet/you have kids. the seal sanctuary at gweek is good too.

one place not done properly is the minack theatre - which we might get to this time.

In answer to your question - nah its not like it was in the 90's.

Its still not exactly one of natures beauties but its no where near as 'fighty' as it used to be.
Newquay have worked hard to shift the reputation as purely a stag doo destination - its worked to some extent.

I went there last year whilst on holiday nearby.

I remember it from the 90s but it seems to have gone further downhill since then. Pretty desolate and seemed half the businesses had gone under.
Kind of a post-apocalyptic seaside town. Won't be back anytime soon!

I too am going to cornwall early Aug, used to go every summer as a kid i've ventured back a few time since & still love the place. Stopping in Porthleven and doing the whole Lizard/north/south coast thing (but not Newquay for the reasons above) most likely try & catch something at the Minac if there's anything on... also got the St Austell brewery tour on my list 😀

If you do find yourself in Newquay there is a large garage on the edge of town with a fantastic deli on the side. The cakes are outstanding! Millionaires shortbread to die for. Couldn't get enough of it. We would pass through going to a farm park and stopped every time.

We go every year, just been to a mates wedding down the road last weekend and popped into newquay for an afternoon. It's better this year than it was last year, much smarter and less lairy.

Still, it's not as pretty as other places, but I'll always love Fistral, even though Rick Stein has ruined it by taking over the chippy and ice cream place and turned it into another nobby fish restaurant.

Not going on a proper holiday there this year though, not with the A30 dug up, bun that.

Try to go at least once a year but we typically have a cottage in Bude or Padstow and run up and down the North Coast, which is really easy to do. On Saturday why are renting just a few miles from Newquay but after having visited the hub of it last year, we'll stick to Fistral beach etc., as the rest of it is a little chavvy for us. It's easy to spend a day on the south coast too. So many places to see, so many ales to sample and fish n chips and cream tea's! I cannot wait.

Never ridden there though and camel trail up to Padstow and trails across to Rock look cool.

We're not going again until we can go out of school holidays! The traffic always seems to horrendous and last times 11hr drive put me right off going again.

We're not going again until we can go out of school holidays!

Scottish school holidays start at the end of June.
Gives me a 3-4 week window to have our holiday before the place gets really busy and the prices rocket.

'Ansum!

Love it down there! Newquay itself is just ok. Fistral beach and Great Western hotel bar/pub grub, with terrace on the cliff overlooking the beach are not bad. There is a pub on a cliff side over looking the sea near Newquay, forget what it's called but it's a nice place to stop off in passing.

Minack Theatre. Stunning exposed location, wrap up if the weathers bad though!

You've got a pretty good list going on there. BTW Foy is Fowey; a quaint river mouth port that splits into two rivers with Fowey on one side and Polruan on the other. There's a car ferry across. Oh and watch out for the winged muggers they will swipe your pasty! May as well do Polperro and Looe while your down that way.

St Ives is an obvious one.

Padstow

Falmouth

Sennen Cove.

Skinners Brewery tour. Not a glamorous location (industrial unit adjacent to Truro) but many pints in the bar afterwards (included in the price) then a short walk into Truro to finish the job 8)

St Austell. Never been to the brewery but avoid the town centre itself, it's a bit of a dump with generic modern retail outlets you see in every town up and down the UK!

Facebook post from a friend of mine who lives in Newquay said "the underagers went full scale, out of control, Football Factory style crazy tonight! Never seen this kind of chaos in Newquay"

Started with a fight outside Sailors and escalated. She had a lad bundled in the back of her taxi by some bouncers and sped off with bottles raining down on the cab...!!

So I won't be going there...

Fowey isn't really worth a visit unless you happen to catch it on a nice summer even, when sitting in the Galleon 'beer garden' next to the river is nice.

My kids like sitting on cannons, eating ice cream and boat rides. So Fowey does us for half a day.

If you're in Porthcurno to see the Minack, it's worth heading a couple of hundred metres down the hill to the Telegraph Museum - specially if the weather's rough.

A hidden gem, and an introduction to the almost unknown story of the first global telecommunications network.

DISCLAIMER: I'm biased, as I work there. (Is there any interest in us offering an STW discount)?

We are going to Watergate Bay again this year. Just up from Newquay. Lovely beach. Can get quite crowded in the water if the flags are close.

+1 for the Telegraph Museum. Will probably make a return visit again this year. Will be asking for the STW discount. 😉 Excellent day out.

HTS if it's cannon and boat rides, St Michaels Mount is for you or Park and Float at Falmouth and take the boat to St Mawes.

St Michael's is a bit far from Looe for us. Been before though and it is very good.

Is Bude worth checking out?

Wouldn't bother with Newquay..... and would give Flambards a miss... but I did used to work there and vowed never to pass through the gates to that hell again.

I shall sadly be out of Cornwall in the summer 🙁 off the the Western Islands of Scotland..... yay.... 😥

Cheers, Steve

Newquay is what it is!a modern seaside town if you want quaint and rustic there's plenty of other options up and down the coast. The beaches are ok (and Boardmasters is on while we're there in August) and the prices in the shops are for the most part reasonable.

My sister(42) and her husband(56) stopped there a couple of years back and enjoyed themselves ,they didn't get beaten up/threatened at all 😯

No ones mentioned the Southwest Coast Path - there are a massive variety of walks to be had, simply get the pub guide and a map, work out a circular route. Sennen Cove to Cape Cornwall or Cape Cornwall to Bottallack are some of the best bits. Off season its quiet enough to ride a bike without encountering the Bobble Hat Brigade - Portreath to St Agnes is good, but there are quite a few steps to negotiate.

Kids loved it 4 years ago. So we're going again. Tickets on Tesco vouchers too, so it won't cost.
