[Closed] New York - where to stay?

Ok, my partner wants to take her two kids, 14 and 16, to New York in October, and it's confusing...

Any views on where would be a good area to stay? Some people say Brooklyn is cool now and an alternative to Manhattan. Others say definitely go with Manhattan. If you are staying there and want to do the museums, but also see the cooler alternative side, any good ideas for location? Or even funky mid price hotels?

Thanks in advance..

Mansfield Hotel. Convenient walk to MOMA, Times Square, Central Park.....

MOMA is fantastic but perhaps not teenager friendly? Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate, is a good day trip up the Hudson Valley.

We stayed at beacon hotel on Broadway. its above the beacon theatre, jonny marr played the week before we went, gutted, tom petty played whilst we were there, bleurgh. anyway, it's quite far up Broadway on the upper west side, but we found it really didn't matter, the subway is so easy to use you can travel around from anywhere and central park was just couple of blocks over and made a nice walk toward the main attractions. If we went back, however, we have said we would try to find somewhere in greenwich or soho coz we liked the vibe and i would make a trip to brooklyn brewery essential.

As above - I think midtown is best for easy access to touristy stuff, walking distance to Central Park, quick cab rides to Greenwich Village etc., train to Brooklyn Bridge.

We stayed in Midtown when we got married in NYC last year. We stayed in a fantastic hotel called The Affinia Manhattan.

It was the perfect location. Right next to Madison Square Garden and Times Square was just minutes up the road.

It really was amazing.

The public areas of the Waldorf Astoria are fantastic, but the guest rooms are in need of modernising. Midtown, Park Avenue & 50th

The Lotte looks nice, overlooking St Patrick's cathedral, 51st St between Madison & 5th Avenues. Correction, it's on Madison Avenue

Last time we stayed in The New Yorker.
Nice enough, but a bit dated.
This time we've rented an Appatrment in the East Village.

Agree with Jon Drummer on the Waldorf, looks lovely from the outside, reception etc but the rest badly needs a refurbishment.

Great location and nice place. Helpful staff and not too big. They staff accepted a couple of private parcels for me and had them waiting on our bed when we checked in weeks later; one US Post and the other couriered - yes, bike parts 🙂
