5 Years ago I managed to give up smoking for new years, but that6 was my last major success. Been promising to drink less, exercise more, save money and get thinner every year since and am fatter and poorer every year.

But this year might be different, want to cut down the drinking, give up the take aways, from there the money and weight should look after themselves

To eat less rubbish.

I do plenty of exercise and we usually eat healthy meals. Its the snacks that are the problem.

Just simply to cut dead wood from my life, people you've always been there for but get nothing in return..

Apart from that nothing but enjoy life and ride the same amount, just enough to stop the wifey from bobbeting me in my sleep

To pick up at least one piece of litter every day.

I made this resolution on the way into 2018 and completely failed to achieve it. The sentiment is good though, so I'm going to try again in 2019.

I quit my caffeine (diet coke) habit in 2018. Some of the residual low level anxiety/anxious thoughts that I had completely disappeared after around 6 weeks. So very chuffed with that.

1) In 2019 I’m going to try the 16:8 intermittent fasting plan. Hopefully this will stop me snacking in the evening and I will loose some weight.

2) Get fit. Do more sports, running, cycling, gym and hiking.

Op - why don't you give yourself days where you can have a takeaway or drink as it just seems like you'll set yourself up for failure. If you eat take away twice a week and drink 3 times why not promise yourself a curry and beer after you've had a good ride at the weekend. There's an adnams ghost ship 0.5% is good if you like the taste of beer without the after effects.

I was going to complete my plan for a global tyranny and wreak havoc on an unsuspecting world, but to be honest after this year that all seems a bit passé, so I may just try and cut down on the cheese

Already joined a gym, which I'll be attending on my lunch breaks. So this time next year I'll be ripped, bro.

so I may just try and cut down on the cheese

Is that really gonna be more feasible? I've seen your Instagram.

Eat less meat. Partially health based but mainly because I'm increasingly aware of concerns about the environmental impact and I probably eat too much red meat anyway so I'm going to give it a go. Not sure I could go full veggie but I'm certainly going to give more thought about it.

Not a resolution as such but my key word from tomorrow is "Focus" of my time broken into family/work/bike and focusing on that element mindfully when in that zone.

More of a focus on being a "cleaner" athlete also.

I really ought to get back on my bike(s) after a few years off. My brain has started to think in terms of places to go, trips I’d planned (but never got around too) and long distance over night routes.

Ive been waiting for this moment 🥳

I will also surf more, I had a great early 2018, but this time I’m going to travel with my boards as well.

🏄‍♂️

2018s wasn't so much a resolution as a commitment to turn my life around.

Working a 5on 5off rotation in africa was not conducive to a stable life in either relationships nor fitness.i was feeling like a ticking timebomb following in my dad's footsteps in terms of working my self into a young heart attacks.

Got my self a job back in the UK with my cycle commute back. Still go offshore but much less often and much shorter trips -to much nicer places.

Dropped 12kg and 4 inches off the waist

Pb'd in my 5k and 10k running times.

Started racing bikes competitively again after 10 years away from the pointy end and getting positive results.

2019 already has big news and further life changes that some folk I now well on here already know about but I also want to capitalise on the progress/changes I've made this year.

The whole Gym / Diet / quitting thing is a bit too chiched for me, but there’s nothing like a new calendar and a bit off time off work to help you think is there?

Last few years have been graft to be honest, but the hard work really paid off last year, my head is right 95% of the time now, work is going places again and home life is good but could be better.

For me 2019 is dual purpose, I’ve got loads I want to achieve in work and I finally feel I’ve got the minerals to do it, that’ll probably mean I won’t be spending hours a day on STW, which is fair.

Homelife is going to be less servitude and more fun for me, Youngest is much less work and my little buddy now and I’m going to stop spending my evenings staring at my phone whilst intermittently looking up at crap TV because the kids are in bed, I’m not needing to dive into nappy changes at a moments notice nor help with bedtime, I’m going to get out of the house a bit more.

Managed to lose the post broken spine weight in 2018, put a bit on over Xmas, but it's not fat. Planning riding more again now my back is getting better (3 years since breaking it). Planning on not working my ass off and taking more 'half days' off to get in a quick circuit of Llandegla on the way to our caravan for weekends.

Doing a mainly dry January (except my birthday and later this week as we have a night away) as it's a good way to shed the Xmas weight.

Is vowing to take an early morning ride once a week when the sun comes back a bit too ‘obviously forgotten within a week’ New Years thing?

I really fancy it, I used to get up early once a week for a swim but had to stop when Baby came, but I fancy a 6am start and get an hour in before the school run sounds like a great way to start the day.

I'm currently recovering from heart surgery so my resolutions are easy.

1. Ride my bike off road again (prob a few months away once my chest has healed)

2. Exercise. Nothing major, just build up to walks and then hikes in The Lakes etc. (again prob a while away)

My new years resolution is to give up sexual innuendos, it's going to be extremely hard. . . .

I never bother with them either but this time last year I sort of decided that I was just going to go out and enjoy all my rides. I'd got into the mindset that I had to do 20+ miles every ride and completely trash myself trying to beat all my Strava times, I did less miles last year but enjoyed myself a lot more.

I normally have half a dozen gym / fitness related goals each year, don't always achieve them as injuries often mean I have to slack off on some of them for too long.

Not quite worked out the set for 2019, but so far:

Perfect 30 sec L-sit on rings (I can do it now but form is mediocre). Rings Turned out Hold would be nice, but will probably take over a year to get that part alone.

Strict muscle up on rings, had a year off bent arm pulling due to tendonitis, so starting from a low base pulling wise. Main challenge will be increasing load without re-agrivating my elbows.

Chongo mount on the slackline and walking backwards on the slack line.

1. fart fewer farts
2. drink less, except when somebody else is paying
3. use the tyres I have instead of buying more
4. ignore the weather
5. face tatt
6. stop posting insincere responses on stw.

3. use the tyres I have instead of buying more

Word!

I've now kind-of hit on options that work for me in all conditions, so can I make it through 2019 without buying a single new tyre?

I have three new year resolutions:
1) Eat more varieties of cheese than just cheddar and stilton.
2) Drink stout more often (easy - I had my first stout in ages on Christmas eve eve and had forgotton how tasty it was)
3) Get back to pre-fatherhood fitness (I worry that resolutions 1 & 2 may be incompatible with this)

Not a resolution as such but this year we'll have more free time so will be out on the bike more, kitesurf more and get away in the van more (so we can kite and bike in different places). Probably walk up a few more hills too.

Mine is to do more than 1 XC race this year, i set out with all the best intentions and then seem to just end up doing 1...

I've got a few weight/fitness goals and targets, but they're general ones, not NYResolutions.

I am aiming to challenge myself more this year. Doing the Jennride on Sunday which is right out of my comfort zone (the riding isn't although the climbing and distance may be a challenge) but actually attending an event and pushing myself to do stuff rather than making up excuses. Aim is to do the Jennride up in the Lakes in the summer. So everything else is about having the right level of fitness!

- Get back on 16:8. It worked well a couple of years ago so need to get back on it.
- Less beer
- More running. Lots of it.
- Complete the Great North Run (ideally under 2hrs). Ballot entries just opened...

To pick up at least one piece of litter every day.

Inspired by this, I managed a whole bag full of rubbish on my way to get a sandwich for lunch....

Am rotten with resolve. Not quite sure if this is exhilarating. It is something.

Already got a head-start in the closing months of 2018 by quitting smoking.

Yesterday, on the 1st of January I woke at 7am and drove to the East coast to collect a huge (turned out broken) beech wood easel and began fixing it up late last night. It will be completed today. And now I shall paint and draw every day (or night) no matter what. And some of these may now be very large paintings.

Swimming shall happen three times a week at very least.

Biking still seems to be the very hardest thing to maintain for a number of reasons, ie because mud, dirt, time, costs and a confounded damp storage situation. Pisses me off to be honest. Biking in 2019 is uncertain, in classic STW style.

The diet is a given 🤣

Also being mostly cheerful for the sake of others and self. Decided that permagrump is an art best left to those with both the face and talent to get the best out of it. On me it seems like an attack of bad wind and a (punchable) melancholy.

All the best to you all. Best feet forward. Into the breach! 😬😀😁

I like the litter one, that's a cracking idea. Although maybe pick up at least one piece per day would be better.

I'm going to try to make other people happy in 2019. 2018 was very much about me, it's time to be a bit more giving I think.

Stop using single-use plastic.

Already got reusable shopping bags.

Buy commercial drinks in cans only. Refuse drinking straws.

Research alternatives to plastic-bottled bathroom products...

There’s no Planet B.

Yes, it starts off quite hard to break the habit of breakfast but soon becomes normal.
Although this time I am considering Tuesdays being a bit more relaxed as I get up at 4.30am to travel away for work so lunchtime is a long way off at that point.
Last time I did 11am to 7pm - going to change it to 12 til 8pm this time though as when working away I like to go out for a run before eating my evening meal.

...I mostly failed 🙂

* Have fun!
PASS but needs improvement.

* Continue with 2018 goals- find breeding partner and get a home together
FAIL

* Ride the ~185km from London to parents in one go.
FAIL. Did PRL100 and other long rides instead.

* Outdoors weekends away from London hiking and biking.
SUCCESS

* Do some mtb racing.
SUCCESS

* <1hr20m in London Triathlon (sprint distance)
FAIL- didn't even enter. Apparently with the new organisers it wasn't as good this year anyway.

* Bench press body weight (75kg), dead lift 2x body weight, 2 min plank.
FAIL - 70kg BP, 130kg deadlift, 1:45 plank

* Only 1 coffee per day.
FAIL but I stopped buying snacks from the vending machine and cut down on pastries (=dropped ~1kg).

* Cut down on internet (online chess, news and porn LOL) and TV.
Overall PASS. Cut down massively on TV in particular. Still wasting time on news websites, forums and playing chess though.

* >8 hours sleep per night.
FAIL

* Take nephew to Cannock Chase trails [scheduled for late Feb]
SUCCESS

Generally 2019 was a frustrating year at work that sapped my energy and motivation for non-work stuff. Also I had a couple of bad injuries (football ankle and stupid bike crash). Not listed above but I massively cut down on plastics, ate less meat and took no flights.

2020- by default goals above apply. Might ditch the triathlon one though. Also will buy a flat/house by myself even if I don't meet someone.

I can take a 3-6 month sabbatical from work but I need a clear plan to make it worthwhile.

Eradicate use of disposible cups. ALMOST - used three all year, one was bought for me before I had the chance to decline.

Still room for improvement in 2020.

Mine is pretty simple compared to some but is a major undertaking for myself. I have to somehow change things and improve my day to day life, I'm stuck in a rut and have been for the past year and a half.

Not resolutions as such, but my aims are:
snack less and lose weight
stop smoking
become less of a recluse
start swimming and using the gym
get out and ride

These all seem to go hand in hand, it's a general lifestyle change. All I need is the motivation each morning and I think I'll be OK. Sort of.

1. To read previous responses to New Years Resolution threads rather than just replying with a weak attempt at humour. Might gain some inspiration that way.
2. Invade a small country. Rename the place and give it an embarrassing new flag.
3. Write fewer lists.

Suitable thread resurrection, nice to see an update from an original contributor, sounds like you are being hard on yourself twowheels, if you can bench 70kg for reps, you can do 75 for one I'm sure! Deads might be more of a stretch to bump to 150 and a 1:45 plank is diminishing returns to get to 2 surely (it's bad for you after a certain point isn't it?)

I make no resolutions, but have lost about 15kg this year since Jan, I've kept up weights all year and got a new bike for my commute. I do however need to show the BMX and MTB some love. Next year perhaps!

Not necessarily a New Years resolution but I'm using the Christmas break to reset myself back to my 2018/2019 self.   I started a journey in Jan 2018 via CBT for fear of flying which moved onto more personal issues and changed me into a much more balanced and satisfied character, but recently I've let stress, worry and habit undo some of that.   I also addressed materialistic qualities and I've failed a little on that also - mostly thanks to the watch thread.

On the plus side, the changes had brought a great deal of individual balance and financial independence for me and my family, so a period of review over Christmas to move more toward Kryton 2.0 whereas I feel I've ended the year at Kryton v1.5 is in order.

I started by giving my wife a well deserved hug the other day.

> Drink less : Loads of scope for me here
> Main 2018 was get fitter and do XC races
> I Got fitter and did about 5 xc races and a few Enduro races so passed that one
> This year I want to again do races and get fitter (target to drop from 87kgs to < 80kgs, am 5'11")
- I'm planning on doing raid Pyrenees in Sept with a few people from work (720km, 11km climbing over 5 days). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raid_Pyr%C3%A9n%C3%A9en Training for that should achieve goals.

Didn't do too badly.

Work was going really well, although ironically we went into planned Liquidation a week ago. It's been a tough couple of weeks, but we're far better of for it. I can't go into reasons, but it actually makes us a long-term viable business even if we have to start a new Co. to do it.

Homelife is a lot easier than 12 months ago, but I'm still shackled a bit by my Wife who doesn't embrace change well, but I spent a lot more time out and about in the summer, now it's dark, wet and 3c I'm glad to be home indoors tbh. We're finally moving house next week, it's taken YEARS, but I'm finally a first time buyer in my 40s. I only need to work till I'm 67 to pay the bloody thing off, C'est la vie, still we'll have a lot more spends each month, not that we'll be flash, just don't need to worry about the pennies so much.

I have no plans for 2020, other than take it a bit easier on myself and stop worrying so much.

Mine for last year was don't let the kettle boil, its just wasted energy.
This years is, if Boris wins, drink more. Much more.
If he doesn't, then improve my grammar and spelling.

@toby1- thanks for the encouragement! yeah not a total fail but those were single rep lifts that felt maximal (subject to reasonable form and not risking injury). I stopped in early March to focus on bike stuff (Strade Bianche di Essex - London Phoenix Easter Classic - Beastway). With another month it would have been doable. I just started again- 45kg bench (decent reps) and 100kg DL (3 reps with pauses, partly hindered by weak grip)- my excuse to trailwagger 🙂

Not heard of plank being bad for you but yeah must be eventually. The 2 minutes was based on some fitness benchmarks I found online. Anyway now I'm just questioning whether it's really important for functional core strength and have been doing weighted sledge push instead.

I started by giving my wife a well deserved hug the other day.

This is the best resolution, like eva.

Go camping a bit more.
Get back into playing in a band.
Get rich or die tryin’

1) - yup, many times
2) - yup, though it's a shitshow of unemployed, homeless drug addicts. And my pal Simon who is well adjusted. Music is good though
3) - income increased by a huge factor

I’ve been pretty successful with my resolutions over the past 3 years, but have kept them few in number.

2017 was to complete my Chartership
2018 was to finish my PhD,
2019 was to work on my career (Job), reduce my carbon footprint, cycle 5000miles and get my BMI to around 20-21 (health, environment) and take up drawing again (skill/fun)

Next year - get promoted(Job), learn (re-learn) French (skill) and MTB more (fun).

Next year:

stop buying veg from the supermarket. See how that goes.
