So, should be released today, who do you think will be honoured this year, talk of Chris Witty being knighted, Joanna Lumley getting a damehood and Emma Radacanu, Daniel Craig and the likes getting honours.

So what surprised will there be, talk of David Beckham getting pushed for a knighthood, although i'm more hopeful this is just his media folk pushing it!

A few worthy minions overshadowed by those who bring the system into disrepute.

It’s a shame that the focus is always on the celebrities and not those that have devoted a lifetime to charity, scientific endeavour, teaching or the environment.

I keep sending mine back, but they persist. It's getting tiresome.

I prefer to take the principled stance of never doing anything that would merit one. That will show them.

Well done fella. This should be what these awards are for, recognising normal folks who go above and beyond to make a difference.

They shouldn’t be for ex leaders who bomb innocent civilians, ex party doners and mps, or sportsmen and woman like the kennys (imo)

Sir Bomb’em Blair

Order of the Garter along with fellow Labourite (had to be careful there, autocorrect suggested layabout) Baroness Amos. This particular honour is conferred by the queen so I like to think she chose them to piss off this current government.

For services to my local community during COVID-19

Congratulations!

a lifetime to charity, scientific endeavour, teaching or the environment.

Whilst these are more worthy, they are not more newsworthy. And that’s how media works. The scientists are always worth reading. Writes a scientist.

My MP, for ‘political services’. He has never voted against the current government as far as I am aware.
He also is one of the highest earners for jobs outside his role as backbench MP, £73000 or so last year.
Interesting to see some of the comments in the local paper website
https://www.herefordtimes.com/news/19818069.new-year-honours-herefordshire-mp-among-five-locals-recognised/
Congratulations monkeyboy

Congrats monkeyboyjc

One thought and not wanting to denigrate recognition where deserved but in these days, medals and orders etc of "the British Empire" is a little questionable, isn't it?

Dr Harries? Is that the one who stood next to Borris in March 2020 and stated any PPE issues for the NHS would be sorted by the next day or so?

In 2007 my old boss got an MBE for services to cycling, this time round my current boss is getting an OBE for services to higher education.

Ian Livingstone! Turn to page 37.

Jody Cundy OBE.

Martin Fairbairn OBE from the Scottish Funding Council is a good one, a very passionate champion in a job that probably expects you to be a nonpassionate suit.

Which is where the vast majority of the awards go to, just ignore the media hype.

Well done monkeyboyjc 👏👏

^^ this - there were over 1200 awards given this year, the media concentration is on the 50 or so people will recognise.... Out side of my community of maybe 900 very no one will know who I am or what I do.

The local press will start picking up relevent recipients over the next few days - I've radio interviews tomorrow and TV next week.

There's people every year we don't agree with although personally I'd have expected Tony Blair to have some sort of recognition by now. Maggie Thatcher only waited 5yra for hers. The press say it's down to how he handled Princess Diana's death in relation to the royals in 97 rather than any conflict.

And a good chunk at the socialist end of the Labour movement. Win win!

Don't forget the internal politics within Buckingham palace - I bet TB rubbed a few of the advisors the wrong way, the Queen isn't alone in these decisions.

I don’t understand the point of these gongs. Just part of the corruption that runs this country. I see Camilla got one for services to adultery, it’s not as if she has done anything else of note. Then there will be all the ones for services to enhancing party funds. I just don’t see the point

Anyone accepting one of these should be first up against the wall when the revolution comes - especially if they consider themselves to be any sort of Socialist.

My former employer got a dubious MBE as one of the queen's birthday honours.

How you can be a DIT Export champion whilst simultaneously planning to move all your manufacturing to India is beyond me, and the gong makes it worse

Lots doled out to the Civil Service and the military for just turning up to do their job - get to a certain grade or rank and a gong was a nailed-on certainty, along with the gold-plated pension etc.

Alan Turing OBE? He’s even on the fifty pound note 😱. For the record, I’m not a socialist, but do have centre left tendencies.

see Camilla got one for services to adultery

I believe she has continued making hospital visits when invited through the majority of the last two years. She just does it without a press pack and a lot less fuss than some of the other members of the royal family (from the people I know who have met her she seems like a genuinely caring person)

I'm a committed republican but don't begrudge her recognition for doing something constructive.
I do begrudge those who get rewards for services to Borris or Keir's party wallets/wallpaper, loyally following a party line, or self publicity as they take away from people who have done genuinely good things and deserve recognition

Unfortunately most of those that are nominated have to be referred to the Queen via the current serving prime minister, so of course many will be Tory donors etc. Id assume many were labour donors, when labour were in power?

It should be separated from government imo.

On a side note - is anyone aware of  any MTB'rs who been nominated/accepted an award. Steve Pete, Martin Ashton, Rachel Atherton etc for the promotion of the sport within the UK and abroad?

Joanna Lumley getting a damehood

50 years Service to the plastic/rubber industry?
If so, it's a bum call.

Anyone accepting one of these should be first up against the wall when the revolution comes – especially if they consider themselves to be any sort of Socialist.

So if you get an award via the Queen for services to the community or society - like monkeyboyjc or TiRed, or my mate Dave at our cycle club - you need to be shot.

But post revolution, if the "state" recognises your efforts like it did in Soviet Russia, that would be OK?

Fwiw, yes a lot of top civil servants seem to get them almost by default. A lot of lower grade civil servants get them as well, for many years of service to an ungrateful public at well below the average wage. And the gold plated pensions are a dim and distant memory.

Tom Pidcock got an MBE for his contribution to cycling, but I assume it would be largely related to his gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics as an MBE seems to be the default award to gold medal winners (unless you win lots and get knighted ala the Kennys)

she did 157 engagements last year including virtual visits. Hardly a busy schedule as most engagements don’t last more than an hour or so

Still that's 157 engagements more than most grandparents, almost one every other day. And 157 more than prince Andrew or Harry....

The queen gave him a gift, she's not going to take it back because some don't agree with it.

Maggie Thatcher became a dame, imo she was a far more controversial PM and damaging to the UK.
