why steak pie on mew years day?
please explain.
Coz it's tasty and easy.
Why turkey on Xmas day? Dunno how long it's been a tradition. Maybe it's a convenience thing. Who wants to prep a complicated meal after a day, night and day partying?
dunno, never even knew it was a thing till I was about 25.
Steak and stilton here.
Tasty.
Mmmmmm. Steak pie from the butchers in Innerleithen.
My cack nearly broke the pan the morning after that one.
i like a nice steak and kidney pie in a buttered breadcake. 😀
I did rather let the side down this New Year by not buying any Black Bun
Is there a better option or something?
cake inside pastry........greedy scotch bastards. 😆
TBF a good Black Bun has little cake, just enough to hold the fruit together!
First time i've ever heard of black bun! 😆
i reckon with some nice custard, i could polish a slab or 2 off.

Long as it contains trivia on fried clooty dumpling I'm happy! 🙂
Ah, but do you even have a silver threepenny to cook in with the clootie?
No idea where the tradition came from but am as stuffed as a stuffed thing from eating loads earlier. Ne'Er Day steak pie is one of the great culinary treats in life.
Curious to know if anyone else has sausage as well as steak in their steak pies? In the town I come from it was traditional to add sausage, but does seem to be a very local tradition.
Yep - me and nipper polished off our steak/links pie earlier - with tatties and mushy peas... we're in Ayrshire but unsure if links a local thing or just us?
We have always added links, I'm in Renfrewshire.
Och we picked up the annual home made clootie dumpling from granddad's on boxing day. All gone now.
Ace things. Reminds me I should get the recipe off him as it's probably gonna skip my dad's generation. He doesn't do kitchens.....Well he builds them but doesn't know how to use them .
Nae links in yer pie in Aberdeen. Malcolm Allan's nae a butcher -he builds houses up here 😉
Yup, steak pie with sausage tonight as per usual ne'erday.
Puff pastry lid only.
Actually thought about the disgust on Binners face as I tucked in. Added a piquancy that only improved the experience. 😀
Had a 'sausages or not' debate on faceboak the other day, there were only one or two anti links dissenters!
Never a 'ready meal pie' though, always make my own, usually make a few for the freezer too.

Shit a brick, I made Roasted Aubergines, Pomegranate seeds and toasted pine nuts with aSpinach and Basil salad.
I'm proper ****ed
If yer putting in sausages then it has to be skinless sausages.
I made Roasted Aubergines, Pomegranate seeds and toasted pine nuts with a Spinach and Basil salad.
Well I hope he was worth it.
Beef links only in a steak pie. And yes, a proper ashet pie.
My pie dish was bigger than my belly this year. Steak pie for breakfast by the looks of things.
I did manage to first foot some folk with Ardbeg, but I could only get cherry cake not black bun. My ne'erday dinner turned out to be ...chicken. Oh the shame of it It's a bad omen for 2017
I know who on this thread will be first against the wall when the revolution comes....
Oh teh irony
Always start off thinking the links are just cheap bulking filling to save on the steak, then you get one of the nuggets of soft meatiness and all is forgiven.
Black bun or fly cake.
It's a big fat Eccles cake.
^^^^^^ There speaks a man who has never eaten black bun
Forgive his ignorance. He's English.
going out on the bike for a spin later, gonna hunt a pie out for my dinner.
pics to follow......... 😀
I have cheers it's a Christmas pudding in pastry iirc.
Forgive his ignorance. He's English.
I'm actually Scottish.
No true Scotsman would ever say a black bun is a "big fat Eccles cake" 😡
Or Christmas Pudding.
My memory must be failing me, it was long time ago.
Would you care to educate me and others of what it is then?
Would you care to educate me and others of what it is then?
God no, I'm English and have no idea. I'm just going on what the true Scotsmen on this post are saying 😀
Ah it's that other fruity sponge served at Christmas, a Christmas cake in pastry.
Glad to see it's not just me that was brought up (Renfrewshire) with sausages in steak pie. Agreed they definitely have to be skinless ones though.
Sausages in steak pie here too. Whether home made or from the local butcher.
Dunno why its a tradition ... just is.
As for a black bun ... never heard of that before ... must investigate. Not something I've heard of round my way much. (North Ayrshire)
Steak pie right up there with Christmas cake fried with the bacon on boxing day.
This is only strengthening my resolve to move north of the border...
I was told steak pie as a tradition goes back to the days when most Scots didn't have an oven in their house. The filling could be made in advance and put in an ashet, and then taken to the village bakers who would cook it. This then meant the fireplace was not in use which enabled it to be cleaned out as is the tradition for the new year coming.
Of course that might all be BS, but it sounded credible to me.
I am partial to an Eccles cake or two drac but in my experience they are much less solid than black bun.
Maybe I have been eating crap Eccles cakes
