Have we done slim wallets recently?  I have a Trove, i previously had a Trove.  It's great,  half a dozen cards in the middle,  bit of cash in either side,  small,  very happy with it.   It's just that,  like the previous one at about the same age,  the leatherette bit goes, well,  manky.   Soft and slightly sticky.  It's leaving marks over my cards and stuff. For example I had my work pass in the same pocket recently,  when I pulled it out on arrival at work it looked like a toddler had taken a blue crayon and scribbled over my photo!  It's getting worse so sooner or later I'll spend the £35 for a new one (it's not silly money,  in fact it's very reasonable for something that lasts 3 to 4 years at least)

BUT before I do,  is there a new favourite i should consider instead?

Ta

Leatherette is going to degrade. Leather on the other hand just develops gtreat patina.

Take a look at Bellroy wallets

I got this thin one about 4 years ago, made by a local young lad who was keeping traditional hand leather working skills going - Oliver Foulds, in Belper.

Hold a couple of cards either side + a central pouch where you can stash a couple of  ££ notes or receipts.

Wasn't a stupid price either.

Absolute quality.  It pretty much goes everywhere with me except in the swimming pool.

I like my Paperwallet- made out of tyvex, the damp-proof coarsing paper stuff, so it's basically paper thin when empty. Very durable and sort of wears nicely, like denim, though I think that's probably pretty finish dependent. The end pockets are completely useless, they're designed just to dump stuff on the floor but that's OK, I just don't use em.

Doubt it’s what your after butt I use a little card sized inner tube wallet with a zip from Fallvarrom on sport pursuit, think it was £10 or thereabouts.

If you have one of those “tech” wallets where does your change/cash go?

Something a little more affordable than Bellroy but similar. Notes, some change and cards

Every time this topic comes up, i get curious again, but the one among others that i tried and stick with is one from Lifeventure via Amazon.

Fabric rather than leather but also develops character with time...2 fold, holds about 6 cards and then a couple of internal pockets for a folded note and a couple of loyalty stamp type paper cards. About a tenner and the one I've stuck with.

You need the Levy wallet. Keeps your cash safe, protected, and in your pocket for years. 😉

Peli/Pelican wallet. They make gun cases and equipment cases, their wallets are designed to only carry a certain number of cards, and they have a rubber gasket around the inner edge so when they’re clipped closed they’re completely waterproof inside. I’ve got two, I managed to break the ‘loop’ off through using a large split-ring to attach it to a lanyard, and the leverage snapped the plastic.

I’ve made a new one out of a woven nylon strap that fitted perfectly and places no stress on the plastic. The original one has things in it like my bus pass, just to keep them handy.

Tbh, they aren’t ‘slim’ wallets, but honestly, how much use are ‘slim’ wallets in real life anyway? Does anyone actually only carry three or four cards and a couple of tenners?

These forced me to cut down on a lot of junk I used to carry in my old wallets, which became almost impossible to carry because of the bulk, but there’s still a few items that the second wallet is useful for, but I can put that somewhere else, like a bag, or a jacket pocket if needed.
Both have tracker cards inside as well, just in case - eufy ones, part of the Anker system, and they’re rechargeable.

Only carry my BOS bank card in my wallet/pouch but I guess I’m not the usual type

I have a decades-old 2cm thick leather wallet.  It's long overdue replacement but...

... why?

All my payment cards and store loyalty cards are in my phone, three-quarters of the once-essential slots are empty.  I no longer carry cash aside from an emergency tenner in my back pocket should I find myself in a third-world country like Oswaldtwistle.  There's a book of stamps in there but when did I last need a stamp?  About the only thing of any value left in there beyond "my phone battery has died" is my driving licence for photo ID purposes.

Belroy, I’ve had a burnt orange slim belroy for 8 years and it’s not showing any sign of wear.

but similar to @Cougar , in the last 1-2 years I rarely carry it. I use my phone for all payments, I rarely carry cash, all loyalty cards are in apps etc. in fact I think I go out of my way NOT to carry a wallet.

Works well for when I carried a wallet as I've gone cashless and pay by card via my phone.

There isn't any leatherette on a trove?

I have had a slim wallet of one kind or another for more than twenty years.

Normal wallets are stupid. Slice of leather between each card, on two sides Or possible 3 folds.

Currently there are about 6 cards in my wallet and a single tenner. Because they aren't sandwiched in between fabric and leather its tiny.

What else would i want?

That pelicase thing would do my head in. Its massive and does noting useful?

I have one a bit like robertajob

I got down to three cards, a debit card and a credit card plus my works credit card. £10 or £20 in cash in the middle bit.

I haven’t used it in ages, I only ever take it abroad when I travel for work. I do have back up cash in the car for parking but my phone has never let me down on my travels

Some of these guncase material, fully waterproof, tactical sealing .... I'm sure they are highly practical if your average day involves being neck deep in a swamp but - and this is going to sound rude but if i produced one of them to buy my Tesco meal deal I'd feel just a bit "Thrudark" iykwim.

I've had a Cycle of Good recycled inner tube wallet for about 4 years now and it's still going strong even though I have overstuffed it with useless plastic cards.

With it being made from inner tubes it also means that it doesn't permanently stretch out of shape if you do overfill it, either and holds the cards nice and tight, unlikely old real expensive and much fatter leather wallet

just to buck the trend, i like a bifold wallet, with change purse, each has cash, the appropriate debit & credit card & i.d or driving license & 1 physical store/health card

I have three in regular use, all leather hugely varying in cost/quality

i only use my phone in an emergency

I have a Belroy. Prompted by this thread I checked my gmail history and I find that it is almost exactly 8 years old. It has lived in my back pocket for all of that time, and although it doesn't look new, neither has it failed in any way. Certainly lives up to their claims of quality.

Only? I don't carry any cards or cash. I have an actual physical plastic note in the saddle bag in my road bike, otherwise it's the phone for everything. So far, it's only my Bus Pass that won't go onto my phone.

Aspinal card holder on the sale. Leather and nicely finished. Some good bargains if you choose the right colour. Just enough for bank cards and membership cards. Plus a little pocket in the middle for notes.

Not the most up-to-date website but as he's local I'll message him. There are some very lovely leather mudguard flaps on the FB page, he'd make a killing with some Belper Bicycle Club versions!

Same.  I have a... I'd hesitate to call it a wallet even, it's a fold with two card slots.  I carry it sometimes when I'm not going to need my wallet (which is increasingly "always") but might need something else; it currently contains an emergency tenner, photo ID (driving licence) and an alternative payment card because the last time I went out my phone battery was on its arse.

Agreed, it is truly hideous.

Mmmm. Absolutely essential given that both money and bank cards are both made out of impermeable plastic 🙄

Good grief no! I don't bother with the tenners. 😁

2 debit cards and my driving license. Did used to have my co-op divvi card in there, but that's now on my phone.

It's a Focx one, must be at least 5 or 6 years old. Just leather and high quality elastic. You can keep a few folded notes in it too TBH as it has a flap.

You don't carry postage stamps or store "buy x and get one free" loyalty cards that they, uh, stamp?  (I think Café Nero still does this?)

At CEX they wouldn't accept a photo of my driving licence as proof of ID.  I had to go to the bank across town and ask them to print out a statement.  Curious that the bank required less proof of ID than a second-hand shop where I was collecting an Xbox game worth about £2 that I'd already paid for online.

Google Wallet can store driving licences and library cards (I've just done mine on the back of this thread), there's also a specific "Proof of ID" slot but that requires a passport.

No, why would I? I don't carry envelopes, paper and a printer so why would I need stamps. The stamps are at home with the envelopes, paper etc

or store "buy x and get one free" loyalty cards that they, uh, stamp?

No. I have a job so I don't need to bother with that shit. Thankfully

Cafe Nero has an app for that. I know this because I was in a Cafe Nero for the first time in about 15 years a couple of weeks ago.

And I can't recall the last time I used a postage stamp. December probably.

Not massively stylish I've jammed more cards in than I need to as most are saved to my phone these days.

To be fair, postage is so convoluted these days that if I do need to actually post something I go to a Post Office and go "can I post this please?"

After reading that above I checked it out and my Google Wallet says the driving licence thing only works for US licences.
Which is a shame.

well thats my parade rained on. 🙁

i see that 'we' will need to wait for Gov.UK to create its own wallet, to securely hold official uk gov type stuff - i wonder how it will compare with the current offerings...... maybe this should be cross posted to the UK Government thread

Bought for our holiday last year as I only needed to take a few select items and have since realised I was carrying far too much crap everywhere and haven't gone back to a bulky trad wallet.

I'm here shocked that people still have wallets. All my payment cards are on my phone and I can't remember the last time I spent cash. I have an old wallet at home with the physical cards and by driving license in it, but that almost never leaves the house.

Google Wallet happily scanned my UK licence and recognised it as such.  It's the "official verified ID" slot which requires a passport (in the UK).

So I went with a metal one, this thing

  https://share.temu.com/2iaEb1tvNxA

I wasn't sure if it would turn out bulky or annoying in some way so tried the cheap temu/shien/aliexpress thing rather than a 50 quid titanium designer version.   So far so good.  I ignore the clip and fold a few notes before tucking between the 4 or so cards i have in it.  It feels premium beyond its cost.   If it lasts 6 months plus I'll be content.   Tempted to stock up tbh!
